How much are your energy bills?

Just that really - I'm interested to know how ours stack up as I suspect they are horrifically large.
How much are your energy bills? Are they separate or combined? How many people in your house and what is your house like?

From 1st June until 9th July we used about £180 worth of gas and electricity but were away on holiday for 2 of the weeks. We pay £220 per month currently on SVR. 2 adults, 2 teens in 4 bed detached in Scotland

4 person house, 4 bed detached, combined bill now £391!

Octopus have told us to put our direct debits up to £178 a month.

There are mostly 4 of us in the house - 5 when ds is back during the university holidays. Very difficult to get people to take short showers.

Energy inefficient 1930s house.

(For now I am not increasing my direct debits to that much)

£100 electricity which includes 2 electric cars. We have oil heating and will probably use about £100 in oil averaged over the year although the price fluctuations are massive so it might be less or double. 3 bed thatched cottage with thick walls but single glazing.
Our electricity rate is very cheap though as we got a special EV deal a while ago that hasn’t gone up in relation to the cap and won’t until June 23.

Thursday37 · 13/07/2022 07:47

Meant to add, it’s 2 adults that WFH and a toddler.

TheGriffle · 13/07/2022 07:50

£222.40 joint gas and electric for a 3 bed detached, 2 adults working from home, 2 under 10. We’re also paying off a deficit within that payment where they didn’t charge us for electricity for 5 months despite us double checking the amount was correct.
We had a new boiler installed March just gone so hoping that will help offset some of the cost of heating in the winter.

Whiskers4 · 13/07/2022 07:51

Mainly just the two of us. Bungalow with dormers, so four bed and extended lounge.

DD is now £116pm and on June's readings was £60. We don't have a tumble dryer, dishwasher or hairdryer, only have lights on if in room and kettle filled for what we need. House is only unoccupied a couple of hours. DH sometimes works from home which doesn't help as requires five items off electrics.

AuntieMarys · 13/07/2022 07:55

Bill for last 2 months has been £98...we pay £175 dd.
Two of us, 4 bed house. Obviously heating not been on since 1st April, haven't used tumble dryer.

LoisPlane · 13/07/2022 07:58

5 people, 3 bed detached house, £95 gas and £135 electric - £240 combined.

I'm with Octopus so it's easy to see what you use. My electric use is always in the £110-£150 bracket (all year) so it evens out, just. Luckily we're on fixed rate until 2023 so this won't rise and our DD covers it.

My actual gas usage was £27 for June but we pay the same DD of £95 to build credit and see us through winter.

Hedgesfullofbirds · 13/07/2022 08:02

4 bed detached stone built thatched cottage, very rural, no gas or central heating. Electricity only plus woodburner for winter heating, just me and my lodger - currently about £70/month which rises to around £100/month through winter period.

But we both work long hours and are away from home for 13/14 hours a day Monday to Friday.

Direct debit currently £104/month and around £500 in credit at the moment

Jmaho · 13/07/2022 08:05

6 people 4 bed detached about 20 years old
Kids are on computers lots and we both wfh
We're with Eon. Were paying £168 a month on a fixed rate now £268pm on variable
We will pay the same amount each month and the annual cost is based on last year's usage until it goes up again!

resuwen · 13/07/2022 07:41

4 person house, 4 bed detached, combined bill now £391!

Is that the direct debit amount or actual usage?
Is it fixed or the SVR?
DD doesn't always correspond to usage especially in summer when you are using less

pokerdone · 13/07/2022 08:06

4 bed Victorian house with just two of us. DD is £125 for gas and electric. Our bills seem to average around £100 but we are paying back £100 gradually from a deficit when our previous company stopped trading. Our old DD was £60!

comfortablyfrumpy · 13/07/2022 08:12

2 or 3 (depending on whether away at Uni) in a chalet bungalow. Mostly LED lighting, which definitely helps.
Electricity c.225 kWH per month now just under £90.
Oil heating. Debating when to fill up tank, not sure if prices will drop before they go up again. Currently about twice what it was costing to fill up this time last year but a few months ago it went up to 3 x and I think it will get back up there before too long. Going to be using heated throws a lot this winter!

resuwen · 13/07/2022 08:24

@comfortablyfrumpy it's fixed, and no it doesn't correspond to my usage - and my account is in credit, that's what BG have said I need to pay so that I'm not in debit at the end of winter.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 13/07/2022 08:29

If you are using less and are in credit then can you not reduce your payment online?
I meant is it a fixed tariff rather than a fixed direct debit amount?

How much are you using per month and how high is your credit balance?

11Hawkins · 13/07/2022 08:29

£70 electric and £10 gas at the moment.

11Hawkins · 13/07/2022 08:30

Forgot to say that's prepaid meter and for the past 32 days!

AchillesLastStand · 13/07/2022 08:32

I’m on the new super high new tariffs (3 of us 5 bed detached house) and my last two bills have been just over £80 but we’ve had the heating off. We pay £240 a month DD and are currently over £800 in credit which seems very high. It will be over £1000 by the autumn.

dementedpixie · 13/07/2022 08:35

@AchillesLastStand Why arent you reducing your direct debit if you are hugely in credit? Isn't the money better in your pocket than theirs?

PicpoulDeMeNay · 13/07/2022 08:35

1980s 4 bed detached with me and DD18, plus DS21 and his GF a couple of times a week - currently £106pm for both gas and electric, luckily fixed currently but only until January.

Last 2 months have managed to keep usage down to about £50pm so building some credit before winter and the rise in Jan I’ll get.

Have started to watch the smart meter like I’m obsessed, but little things like realising I only need the hot water on for 45 mins once a day is helping! Luckily boiler was brand new 4 months ago, replacing a 10 year old one, so I’m hoping that will show some efficiencies this winter.

Am still anticipating it at least doubling in January. Alongside my end of fixed rate mortgage rise, new fixed rate is double my previous!

likeliterally · 13/07/2022 08:37

A £100 bill will be £164 by October.

We are around this mark. Scary to think we will have to find an extra £64 on top of food and petrol costs.

I think for many life will become about surviving rather than living.

User952539 · 13/07/2022 08:42

We have a large house and have two adults and two older teens. We are currently averaging £180 on electricity (water and heating are oil). Our DDebit is £250 and we are being told to increase it to £720!!
