Glasgow hotels

We are looking to go to Glasgow to see a friend. I’m trying to find a cheap but not terrible hotel/accommodation. It would be the first week in August so summer holiday time. I haven’t been before so not sure on the area but does anyone have any recommendations? I have come across Travel Lodge, Queen Street, any advice on that one? Thank you.

Will be noisy as hell I'd imagine. If with the dc i prefer the premier inn on George street.

Georgieporgie29 · 12/07/2022 18:46

Have found a travelodge at Govan that looks ok.
I didn’t think about premier inn, I’ll have a look at that, thank you.

If you've got access to transport while you're there then there's a spa hotel in East Kilbride with a nice pool which we've often found to be quite cheap

We stayed in an Ibis Styles hotel in Glasgow a couple of years ago which was very good

User0ne · 12/07/2022 18:54

It's the holiday inn

Govan is very much in the scheme so to speak. Queen street puts you super central. Are your driving or using public transport.

Parking in centre is nothing short of brutal and can be incredibly expensive.

If using public transport go central and use as a base then queen street fine. If driving try out near glasgow airport. About 15 mins drive from centre and some decent food places and braehead shopping centre is close by.

emmathedilemma · 12/07/2022 19:00

Are you travelling by car because if so, that adds another dimension to choosing a hotel.

Castlecould · 12/07/2022 19:05

Try Motel One, Ibis Styles or Moxy Merchant city for rooms under £100. All in central Glasgow and nice hotels.

Jaxhog · 12/07/2022 19:07

We stayed in the Premier Inn there, before lockdown. It was lovely. Parking is in the NCP across the road.

TheCanyon · 12/07/2022 19:08

I didn't even know they had built one at the hospital, not been in a while! Yeah I wouldn't be staying away out there.

We stayed at the holiday inn on Stockwell st last year, was actually fairly decent.

Where abouts does your friend live?

Chewbecca · 12/07/2022 19:10

We stayed in the Grasshopper hotel and were really impressed by its value / quality / location.

saraclara · 12/07/2022 19:13

I LOVED Motel 1. It's amazing value, yet looks really stylish and cool. It was Travelodge price when I stayed, yet felt like a four star place. Only the size of the rooms gave away the price.

PITAneighbour · 12/07/2022 19:19

Do not go to Govan too far out 😀

Habibtihayatiii · 12/07/2022 19:35

Seconding motel 1 - stayed there recently and while it's not plush, the value and comfort far exceeded the price tag.

Georgieporgie29 · 12/07/2022 19:48

Loads of ideas here. Thank you so much. We will be driving but happy to use public transport when there if easier. There will either be 2 adults and 1 child or 3 adults 1 child if teenager decides to come.

Citizen M in Renfrew Street is a nice super cool hotel which is quite cheap too.

Georgieporgie29 · 12/07/2022 19:56

Oh I’ve just looked at the Motel one hotel and I love it. It doesn’t allow you to add children so I’ve had to send them a request for a quote.

OP posts:
Georgieporgie29 · 12/07/2022 20:12

So I’ve looked up the hotels mentioned

citizen M Renfrew st. - 2 people per room only
grasshopper hotel - unavailable
holiday inn Stockwell st - got quote
ibis styles George st - unavailable
moxy merchant - can only have 2 people per room and need 3
holiday inn East Kilbride - got quote
motel one - have emailed for price with a child. Fingers crossed because I like this one

the quotes I’ve got are quite a bit more than the one at govan street. Is that a definite no then as too far away?

If it's a great deal the travel lodge govan would be fine esp if travelling by car as you will have easy parking. You can get a bus into the centre or drive - approx 15 mins to city centre. A more central hotel might make for a better experience, but it depends what you are doing. There is nothing of interest in the area near that travel lodge, aside from the Lidl maybe! Some would say the area is a bit rough, so it's just a place to get your head down. I would stay there if the deal was good and you were mainly day tripping around different bits of Glasgow.

Have you tried the holiday inn express riverside? It's family friendly.

Scianel · 12/07/2022 21:05

I wouldn't necessary stay in Govan. It's a tad rough. That being said its good for the Subway.

Georgieporgie29 · 12/07/2022 21:16

What about travelodge Dumbarton is that any good or Braehead?

also, there’s an apartment on Wallace street is that an ok area?

got a price for the holiday inn riverside, thanks

Queen St has no parking so rule that out.

There are Premier Inns near the court, opposite the SECC and at Braehead that have parking. There’s also one at Stepps that has free parking and is close to the train station.

Are you going to be in the City Centre every day? There might be better hotels further out of the centre if you’re not.

Scianel · 12/07/2022 21:25

Dunbarton is very far out, it would a bit like staying in Watford to visit central London. Also not a place of charm as far as being a tourist destination goes.
On the plus side it's good access to Loch Lomond from there.

If being central is a priority then I would in fact chose Govan over that as you're pretty central there and as I said very good subway access to central Glasgow and the West End.

Wallace Street is the bit of the centre that's south of the river so mostly industrial units, wholesalers, that kind of vibe. You'd need to cross the river to access much.

Heli1copter · 12/07/2022 21:25

Dumbarton is miles out of the city, as is Braehead. You'll spend 30mins in the car each way to get into the city centre.

The travel lodge on Queen Street is often used by local council to accommodate asylum seekers.

Citizen M or the Moxy would be my choice. Both good locations near restaurants etc and decent price.

Scianel · 12/07/2022 21:27

Oh and OP be very wary of any cheap hotels on Argyle Street.
