Glasgow hotels

We are looking to go to Glasgow to see a friend. I’m trying to find a cheap but not terrible hotel/accommodation. It would be the first week in August so summer holiday time. I haven’t been before so not sure on the area but does anyone have any recommendations? I have come across Travel Lodge, Queen Street, any advice on that one? Thank you.

Don't stay in Cumbernauld!

Scianel · 13/07/2022 09:49

Cumbernauld? That's not a holiday. Wallace Street you're at least quite central so if you had to pick between the two, take that one.

JustLyra · 13/07/2022 09:53

The ibis in Cumbernauld isn’t in the worst location tbh.

There’s a pub next door and a decent Italian on the same site. Its a short walk to a retail park and it’s right off the motorway.

it’s not in the centre of cumbernauld.

Wallace St flats are full of drug dealers and brothels. And they had an issue where it was easy to override the door codes to get in the main building previously.

You would be better staying in Govan than there

I stayed at the Glasgow ibis once (with a group I would never ordinarily choose ibis) and it was much the same tbh. One of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. Cheap just attracts non desirables

PocahontasMcGinty · 13/07/2022 09:57

Actually just seen that you are driving. Go to Braehead. Easy to get a bus into town or West End from there, most other places you can drive to and park easily

beachcitygirl · 13/07/2022 10:11

Try the campanile glasgow, often forgotten about but in a fab area, near to finnieston, parking available.
Or
Radisson red (sometimes has food deals - fab sky bar & pizza restaurant

Premier inn pacific quay which is right beside BBC building very handy or Brunswick hotel city centre (more boutique - great bar & great location)
Or
Rab ha's (above a gastro pub)
Or
Sandyford hotel finnieston
Or
The easy hotel glasgow city centre.

don't do East Kilbride (suburban hell)

Georgieporgie29 · 13/07/2022 15:56

OK so teenager is now coming, however, the ones I had pencilled in are the ones you guys say are not great. So I'm going to do a Premier Inn and 2 rooms.

Someone mentioned Stepps and this is coming up the cheapest. Are the trains quite OK fare wise from here to Glasgow does anyone know because I think this one might actually be perfect for us.

Stepps is a dull boring suburb. Nice houses and literally nothing else. I just wouldn't, you would literally need to drive everywhere have you tried ibis budget at Springfield quay? Great for cinema, arcade, short walk over bridge to west end & town
campanile? really handy Or the village?

soupmaker · 13/07/2022 17:04

I have pals who live in Stepps. The train service isn't great. Check the timetable as I think the service has been reduced to only a few trains an hour.

HouseofGods · 13/07/2022 17:30

Do not stay in Wallace Street! DH and I looked at buying one of those years ago when they were built and DSis in police said absolutely not - she was right!

Cambuslang Premier Inn is right on the motorway so you'd be 10 mins max wing the M74 and in the city centre. Nothing much beside it right enough apart from McDonald's and kfc.

bloomety · 13/07/2022 17:39

Premier inn at braehead - right beside braehead shopping centre and lots of restaurants. It’s the south side of Glasgow, about 15 mins drive from city centre

bloomety · 13/07/2022 17:40

Also would second campanile

They look to be about every 15 minutes ish?Tbh the price difference between this and the others is over £200, that’s what’s swaying me more. We would probably get a train in in the morning and one back later that night and spend all day out. Friend is talking about us going out for one of the days which would be a car ride anyway. Would you still definitely say no to this?

I do live in a smallish town and used to having nothing here and needing to drive or use public transport to get around (although public transport is not like you would get in a major city, it’s every 20 mins or 30 mins depending on where you’re going/what mode you’re going by).

@bloomety campanile is all sold out for our dates

Next up price wise is city centre south premier inn?

I'd go for that one if the budget allows.

Welderrrrr · 13/07/2022 18:03

A return ticket from Stepps- Queen St is £3 something. Trains are fairly reliable again and the bus is alright.

It’s good as a commuter town, some pretty walks and a decent cafe on the main street. I’d stay here over most places in town with kids.

soupmaker · 13/07/2022 18:08

I'd happily stay in the city centre south Premier Inn. It's on a busy road but within 5 minutes walk you are on Glasgow Green and can walk along the River Clyde or you're into the Merchant city with lots of great places to eat and drink.

If you do stay there go to Shawarma King on King Street for the best kebabs in the city. Place looks run down but they are the absolute business.

For the sake of saving £200 I would consider the Stepps PI but I love being able to park the car and just walk everywhere. Especially of an evening when cities are at their most interesting.

Notreallyhappy · 13/07/2022 18:12

Premier inn on George Square. Centre and cheap and cheerful

soupmaker · 13/07/2022 18:13

@Georgieporgie29 parking at Stepps is free but there is a cost at city centre south. Might need to factor that in.

Invisimamma · 13/07/2022 18:14

Village hotel is great of you can get a deal.

@soupmaker it says £6 overnight parking which is great. Although by saying overnight, I don’t know if that means it’s more in the day or you can’t park there in the day. I may have to email them. Difference between those 2 is about £100 with the parking so not too bad.

Have a brilliant time wherever you stay!

JustLyra · 13/07/2022 18:58

Staying in stepps is absolutely fine for what you planned tbh.

Been here on business. Completely agree with location recommendation . Village hotel opposite is also nice and has a pool ( more expensive but worth checking price of)

Also agree with above. And with cycling into town and west end/ south side (ie shawlands)
what about an apartment in the west end?
