Help! 15yo needs second vaccine, but no supplies of AstraZeneca. Can they have another type?

We're going away Aug 6 and they need to be double jabbed before we go ( is that still correct? For Spain?)
But there's no AZ vaccine locally in East Midlands. Am prepared to travel, does anyone else know if their local area has any?
Give me your best advice!

You need to get in touch with your GP and get them to locate a clinic with AZ. They will have access to the database. Explain your predicament.

Isn't Pfizer the only one licensed for under 18s?

TrogLaDyte · 12/07/2022 16:02

i thought children had to have Pfizer?

Been Pfizer for all under 18s as far as I know.
What was the first jab?

MargaretThursday · 12/07/2022 16:06

AZ isn't for under 18s. You will get Pfizer or Moderna unless there is an allergy reason in which case you need to talk to your GP.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/07/2022 16:10

Are you sure it was AZ? AZ isn't licensed for children.

I didn't think Moderna was licenced for under 18s either unless it's changed in the last couple of weeks?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/07/2022 16:11

And don't you need to be 4 weeks past your second jab to be considered fully vaccinated or has that changed?

tonystarksrighthand · 12/07/2022 16:12

You just need a negative test to enter Spain.

Just got back and we are unvaccinated.

Mind you, nobody asked for anything or checked.

mindutopia · 12/07/2022 16:14

They aren’t offering AZ anymore. I had Pfizer for my booster. Perfectly fine to mix them.

InflagranteDelicto · 12/07/2022 16:45

As far as I'm aware, only Pfizer is licensed for under 18s. There is a shortage, we always recommend ringing round the sites to see who's got some and who is able to vaccinate 15yo.
We have some where I work, but can only do 16+.

randomsabreuse · 12/07/2022 17:31

Only Pfizer for U18s as far as I know

PennyFleck · 12/07/2022 18:34

Thank you, panic over. I posted on here after 119 were less than useful (they recommended to 'drive around the clinics until you found one' and also to 'wait two weeks and see what happens', before finally trying to make ME am appointment despite me saying eleventy billion times, this is for my daughter. Local docs said ring 119. Was going round in circles, hence asking you marvellous Mumsnet people.
In the end, I drove to our local community hospital in way home from work, asked them, and we have an appointment tomorrow at 4:30 for Pfizer.
Thanks again.

Now I just want to know who has flown EMA to Almeria, and what pieces of paper I need for me and my 15 yo!

If it's Spain then its proof of being fully vaccinated (2 doses plus booster if age 18+ and >270 days since 2nd dose or just 2 doses if age 12-17 or <270 days since 2nd dose). Nhs covid pass/paper copy proves this

Or you can do a private PCR or LFT prior to travel if not fully vaccinated or unvaccinated. You need your certificate to prove the test result

PennyFleck · 12/07/2022 20:15

@dementedpixie thank you very much.
