Any treatment for viral conjunctivitis?

My 9 year old is getting over a virus and has had conjunctivitis for a couple of days. It’s really hurting him and I wondered if anyone had found any good cures to minimise the pain and itch while it clears up?

Oh and if it's gunky cool some boiled water, check it's not too got and use a cotton bad to wipe the gunk
