Can anyone recommend me a cheap (second hand) automatic hatchback?

I had an old manual clio before but I hate driving and just want an automatic now. As cheap as possible ideally (second hand) and reliable. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I paid under 2k for my clio- very cheap would be good!

I had an automatic Nissan micra and absolutely loved her. She was an old dear when I eventually sold her on because I needed a bigger car. She was 22 years old and in great nick. I'd have another in a heartbeat.

On a limited budget and with automatic as a requirement, you can't be too choosy so the best thing to do would be to just scour Autotrader, eBay, FB marketplace etc looking for any car, preferably a small one to make the most of your budget, that meets the above requirements and consider anything that fits the brief. Also be prepared to travel if you can.

Also if you have any contacts at garages, you might be able to pick up something that way. Ideally you'd be looking at something with low miles that's been well maintained. It really is the luck of the draw and you might find something.

A friend of mine really struck lucky and got a 15 YO Corsa that had under 50k miles on it and a full service history for just under £2k, but that was via her SIL who is a mechanic. I think the car had been owned since new by an elderly person who had decided to give up driving.

Thanks both.

@BarbaraofSeville you're right, definitely can't be too choosy and it's seeing what's around! If I could find something like your friend's corsa that would be idea!

Look at an ex mobility ford fiesta! They are fab card, the automatic is true and so easy to drive plus they are spacious inside!

Automatics are more expensive and second hand prices still crazy. I paid 6k last year for an automatic Skoda fabia which seems good

I've seen an auto 2009 fiesta for £5495, low mileage and fresh MOT- full service history. Not cheap cheap but decent value at the moment?

Sounds good and Fords are generally well made and reliable. If you put the specific model into Google you should get reviews from places like Honest John where they will say stuff like this size engine of the model is good but avoid the other size engine.

QuebecBagnet · 12/07/2022 11:36

Also autotrader is good as it tells you if a car is a decent price or not

WatermelonSugarSigh · 12/07/2022 11:53

Thanks @QuebecBagnet- didn't know about honest John and being able to find out about engine sizes and whether that model is any good so that's useful

If you're on a low budget I think Vauxhall Corsas are good value for money.

I inherited an automatic Corsa from my grandad and it never let me down.

WatermelonSugarSigh · 12/07/2022 12:27

Thanks @babyjellyfish - I like corsas too so that's a good option.

Anything like a corsa, clio, fiesta is good but definitely happy to get other suggestions!
