School in the heat. Bloody nightmare. A rant.

Secondary school, exams over, 11s and 13s gone. No fun trips. Sports day over. And it’s sweltering. Kids are basically refusing to work. (Year 9s whenever anyone mentions the heat pretend to collapse dramatically on the desk in synchronisation. Which would be funny if I wasn’t so hot and grumpy) One tiny little fan for the whole room. Kids bringing in frozen water bottles, genius, except for the crunching, crackling and rattling. I’ve re roomed the worst classrooms, but still complaining. (I know, I’m hot too.)
Any tips on what I can do? (I’ve got a week of very dull cover to get through)

As a parent to a year 9 you have my sympathies.
Buy a bunch of cheap ice lollies and a cool bag and bribe them?

Danikm151 · 11/07/2022 21:41

Outdoor lessons in the shade by trees?
our teacher used to do this with us in 6th form. It was great 🙂

Don't look at the forecast for next Monday, it's insane. 40 degrees in London, not much better elsewhere.

Seriously worried about how hot it will be in classrooms, it's unbearable already.

Also, the crunchy ice bottle sound is the worst.

LifeInsideMyhead · 11/07/2022 21:47

Will they cancel school next Monday ? Im considering not sending mine... their school isnt set up for heat.

vipersnest1 · 11/07/2022 21:48

... and then you get the inevitable 'Miss / Sir, I'm really hot'. I've got to the point I just say, 'yes, so am I'. Grin

vipersnest1 · 11/07/2022 21:50

Forgot to say: get some of the chiller pads that are meant to be used on pillows, but sit on them (refrigerate beforehand if you want) - they really help.

imnotthatkindofmum · 11/07/2022 21:51

I am extremely lucky that i have air con in my classroom (it used to be a computer suite)

Makes no difference to my year 9s. One of them wanted to open a window 🤷🏻‍♀️ they didn't understand that it would be hotter with the window open and they also wouldn't take their blazer off.

Kids love complaining!

Agree though most classrooms are not set up for this level of heat. With increasing incidents of temperatures over 30 in the coming years we're going to need to improve this.

vipersnest1

if I say

I’m really hot my dd says

thats for others to decide not you… boom boom

Georgeskitchen · 11/07/2022 21:53

Open the classroom windows. That was our air con back in the 70s 🤣

blackheartsgirl · 11/07/2022 21:55

Well at least teachers don’t have to keep thier blazers on this ridiculous heat like my dds school insist they do.

or have to wear tights and skirts, the lads had to still wear thier trousers whilst the male teachers came in wearing shorts and t shirts.

makes me cross.

Julystheme · 11/07/2022 21:56

We’ve got kids walking round in coats. Confused

The weather forecast for Monday is hotter than the previously highest recorded temperature of 38.7 degrees.

No way should any school be forcing blazer rules in this heat. I would tell DD not to comply. None of the schools here have blazers this week.

Forecast on the BBC Weather app is showing 35 degrees, which is still likely to be a nightmare in UK classrooms but not 40 which I believe the Daily Mail was reporting.

coronafiona · 11/07/2022 22:01

Put a bottle of frozen water in front of the fan

AtomicBlondeRose · 11/07/2022 22:02

Not even in the hottest part of the country but my local secondary school let kids wear Pe kit today which seemed uncharacteristically sensible.

Oh gawd 🥵

Thank goodness I don't work on Mondays!

imnotthatkindofmum · 11/07/2022 22:04

My kids have no ties and blazers. Crazy to wear them! What's wrong with some management?!

noblegiraffe · 11/07/2022 22:05

Here’s where the 40 degree forecast is from.

xcweather.co.uk from this website.

perenniallymessy · 11/07/2022 22:07

DS's secondary school don't require blazers in term 6.

This week we've had an email to say they can wear pe kit all week. Great in practice but we only have one set of pe kit (since the branded top is about £20), so I'm going to have to run the washing machine every night this week or send him in sweaty kit.

DS2 is still in primary and his classroom next year is above the kitchen and apparently stinking hot on a normal day. At least by the time it heats up they should be done with SATs so they can head outside under the shade of a tree on the hottest days.

Yes, some of our best lessons just chilling under a tree. Still remember what I was taught unlike the others- must have been the novelty!

TheMoth · 11/07/2022 22:09

It's weird though, they're too hot in a shirt and tie, but perfectly happy wearing a non uniform jacket🙄
And a hood. Definitely need a hood.

BertieBotts · 11/07/2022 22:10

Poor you, that sounds awful. Here they cancel school if it's too hot! 25 degree indoor temperature at 10am is the cutoff. (they can only measure it from a room that isn't in direct sunlight).
