Can't deal with this heat any more

Currently WFH, no AC, fan on, but not helping much. Drinking ice water. What are your tips for staying cool?

I wasn't able to sleep much and cannot function if it's going to be like this for the next week or even longer...

I do live in A+ rated new build house tho so is insulated to the max.

Konfetka · 11/07/2022 16:14

Caffeine!

When I'm flagging in the heat nothing perks me up like a strong black coffee. A cup of Earl Grey tea is also brilliant and reminiscent of the Raj. Seriously I used to think the adults were bonkers drinking tea and coffee in the tropics but now I get it.

I get up at 6am and open all the windows and doors fully to let the dawn air flow through and cool the house down.

As soon as the temp outside gets above about 22 degrees, I shut up the side of the house that the sun faces. Windows, blinds and curtain shut to keep the heat OUT.

My bedroom is on that side so that gets a shut door as well. I did that at about 9.30am this morning and it's still 'only' about 23c in there, depsite being 32c outside. If I'd left everything open it would be 30c+. When I got to bed tonight I'll open the windows fully and place fans in front of them to blow air into the room. As the night goes on, the air outside gets cooler and so the air the fans move into the room should be cooler.

The side of the house is the shade is left open for the day, more for daylight. i.e. my office. It's 30c in here at the moment Sad

We have a paddling pool in the garden for the dog but mostly I just go down and stand in it every couple of hours Grin

this weather bores me. I hate it.

luckily i live on an old stone cottage and its cool. Its very breezy today and lots of cloud cover and my windows are open.

i tend to stay in during hot weather and much prefer so go out walking in the rain. Cant even run in this weather hence why im bored

Time40 · 11/07/2022 16:33

Some say put ice in front of fan and it makes the air cooler. I haven't tried it though

I tried it. It's total nonsense - does nothing whatsoever.

RatherBeRiding · 11/07/2022 16:37

I wrung out a tea towel in cold water the other night for my old dog who was panting and panting and couldn't settle - laid it over him and within 5 minutes he was fast asleep!

gingercat02 · 11/07/2022 16:39

Come and live on the NE coast. It's about 25, overcast and a nice breeze

Kinsters · 11/07/2022 16:45

I live in the tropics and the only thing that really works is aircon (and fans if it's not too hot and sunny and you don't have to move or do anything). I do find an ice lolly helps me stay cool but yeah, aircon.

I bought a chrome pedestal fan from Argos for £60. Much better than a white plastic one. On the advice of a friend.

It is so good I have ordered a chrome desk fan too now.

Those white plastic fans really are a waste of time.

thereisonlyoneofme · 11/07/2022 16:50

I had never heard of neck fans, but Ive just googled and ordered one! Thanks for that

And as others have said keep your windows closed! People seem to think it helps to open them but it really doesn’t.

It depends on a lot of things.

My house is definitely cooler with the windows open.

ImAvingOops · 11/07/2022 17:05

I've got the cats gel pad on my head. I stick it in the freezer earlier but the cats don't like the texture.
I think this will be very handy next time I have a hangover too

Cope74 · 11/07/2022 17:09

Only thing to add to all the suggestions is to open any loft hatches up & leave them open throughout the hit spell - it does make difference, literally gives the heat somewhere else to go!

Cope74 · 11/07/2022 17:10

‘Hot’ not ‘hit’

towels are good but always lay them under not over a dog, laying them over significantly reduces their ability to regulate their own temp.

youwouldthink · 11/07/2022 18:23

Freeze a hot water bottle and towel over it and your feet on it, then move it to your back

HorribleHerstory · 11/07/2022 18:47

I went for a nice long run. Turned into a sweaty tomato but means comparatively I now feel cool. I stuck my feet in the river after too

thereisonlyoneofme · 12/07/2022 11:59

OK neck fan has arrived, but how do I charge it, its only got a USB cable, do I just plug it in to my computer and leave it on ? Not used this cable before except for tyre pressure thing in car, which means car has to be on, dont fancy sitting in there for a few hours !! sorry technophobe here.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 12/07/2022 15:43

Charge it like your phone. One end in usb plug socket and the other (mine is a micro usb) end in the neck fan.

thereisonlyoneofme · 13/07/2022 09:08

My phone charger hasnt got USB its a 3 pin plug, but I have googled and been out and bought a 3 pin with a USB socket in, I never even knew these existed.
Must get up to date with technology!

ArchitectBarbie · 13/07/2022 09:11

Those with grey double glazing will have hotter homes than those with white double glazing.

keep the windows closed :)
