£60. But can't quite tell how many it's for...

HappyandYouKnowitClapYourHands · 10/07/2022 08:50

What size is that? Looks like the size of a giant muffin? Would need to know serving size to estimate costs.

I really dislike abstractly decorated cakes like these. I don’t think they look good at all.

Workawayxx · 10/07/2022 08:50

Not sure how big it is but I was thinking 75

I would be expecting to pay about £80 based on the fact a bog standard one in Waitrose costs £15 now.

Overthebow · 10/07/2022 08:52

I don’t think I’d pay very much for that, it looks like it’s very messy at the top and doesn’t look appetising. Maybe £30?

NancyJoan · 10/07/2022 08:53

£60-70, maybe?

Choccywoccydoot · 10/07/2022 08:54

Thank you everyone

Its about 3 layers of 6 inches cake

Maybe 15cm height

NauseousNancy · 10/07/2022 08:54

Looks like possibly a 1.5 height 6” cake, so I’d recon at the moment would be around £75.

OutDamnedSpot · 10/07/2022 08:56

Honestly, I wouldn’t. It looks messy. I’d also rather make my own.

Depending on size though, I’d expect it to cost £50-75.

20viona · 10/07/2022 08:57

£80

It’s tiny. £30.

Whitney168 · 10/07/2022 08:59

I'll go £120 even though it's small - reasonable amount of work in there, but - more importantly - it's 'on trend' so bound to cost more LOL. Not worth it, but ...

CiderJolly · 10/07/2022 09:02

It looks like mouldy cheese. I wouldn’t want it at a party- would prefer traditionally decorated ones.

Veryverycalmnow · 10/07/2022 09:03

I don't like that style so wouldn't order that messy- arty looking type of cake. If I did £30

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/07/2022 09:04

OP is this the point at which you say you made it yourself?

Ingredients x3 isn't it?

PuppyMonkey · 10/07/2022 09:06

I am familiar with MN cake threads and therefore know it will be a lot more expensive than I think.GrinCake

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 10/07/2022 09:06

£60-£70. I like it.

Heistonabike · 10/07/2022 09:08

It looks like a rubbish attempt at a very expensive cake. Like when you buy a wedding dress from Wish! I'll go with £120.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/07/2022 09:08

I'm not really sure what I'm looking at. Is this current cake fashion?

It looks like a lot of work has gone into it and you would hope it is made with good quality ingredients so I can see it costing a lot of money to reflect this, not sure how much but £60-80 or whatever. If this is something you want to buy, you need to pay the price, otherwise make your own and find out why the price was so high or buy or make a simpler cake that will probably taste just as good but not have the wow factor if it's a stylish cake done well.

No I'm just trying to understand pricing. Got a cake at Paul and it was only around 25/30 quid and given its a chain and has got to add the cost of the local theyre renting/buying etc... I'm finding it curious how, in comparison, cakes sold online by small businesses and such are priced

OP posts:
EspeciallyDeIighted · 10/07/2022 09:10

I wouldn't to be honest, it is not to my taste at all. But probably £60-£80 from a professional baker if you like that style.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/07/2022 09:10

If you're setting the price because you made it, you need to cost the ingredients plus your time at NMW as a very minimum, but if you find that you arrive at a price that people aren't willing to pay, then you might need to rethink your business model, or offer it alongside other less labour intensive products that can be sold at a more palatable price, eg brownies, which are very quick and easy to make and people seem to be willing to pay well for.

KurriKawari · 10/07/2022 09:14

Looks like someone did a vomit on a cake.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/07/2022 09:14

Small business cakes are more expensive because they don't have the economies of scale.

Paul will be buying ingredients in bulk, making batches of cake mix in bulk, decorating a few cakes with the same batch of icing etc, so more time efficient than making up a mix for one cake, have delivery contracts that are less per parcel, supplementing more labour intensive products with those that are made with much less effort, etc etc.

Throughput will be much higher - both the small business and a larger scale one need a suitable kitchen, but the small business might do 100 cakes a year, whereas Paul might do 10000 in the same space, so disproportionately lower costs per cake to provide the facility.
