Small business cakes are more expensive because they don't have the economies of scale.

Paul will be buying ingredients in bulk, making batches of cake mix in bulk, decorating a few cakes with the same batch of icing etc, so more time efficient than making up a mix for one cake, have delivery contracts that are less per parcel, supplementing more labour intensive products with those that are made with much less effort, etc etc.

Throughput will be much higher - both the small business and a larger scale one need a suitable kitchen, but the small business might do 100 cakes a year, whereas Paul might do 10000 in the same space, so disproportionately lower costs per cake to provide the facility.

That makes sense! Thank you

60 pounds. I like it

It looks more like cheese to me!

It looks unappetising and why isn’t it centred on the board?

Thanks for your feedback everyone

I wouldn't have it for free, it looks horrible.

I think it's not a great photo and suspect it looks very nice in real life. It looks like a fancy cake, something a bit different, and £30 is cheap if it's handmade and presumably good quality ingredients.

Floraanddougal · 10/07/2022 11:14

It looks unprofessional and unappetising so for that one, I’d complain and not pay for it at all

i think you could have found a better example

No I'm just trying to understand pricing. Got a cake at Paul and it was only around 25/30 quid and given its a chain and has got to add the cost of the local theyre renting/buying etc... I'm finding it curious how, in comparison, cakes sold online by small businesses and such are priced

Because chains buy in bulk and sell more. They're able to make loads at a time due to catering kitchens. They have loss leaders so are able to make more profit on other items.

Your average Joe doing it from home isn't able to do any of that and is also doing it all by hand.

bloodyplanes · 10/07/2022 11:46

It looks like a 5 year old made it

Mossstitch · 10/07/2022 11:54

😅 Phew thank goodness you didn't make it as I don't like to be unkind. Wouldn't buy it at all! My initial thought on seeing the photo was it's made out of ice-cream 🍦

Floraanddougal · 10/07/2022 12:08

How much was that one priced for op? It’s very small too. Did you pay for it?

Dic · 10/07/2022 12:14

Nothing! Looks shit

StopDrivingIntoMyFence · 10/07/2022 12:17

£30 - I don't like that style much.

Choccywoccydoot · 10/07/2022 12:20

That one was priced 50 pounds

Heres a better quality one
I think the cake just looks rushed

I'd be interested to see the image of the cake the brier based this one on, whether it was a one off custom design based on an image given to them or whether they have a few standard options and this was one of them. Because to me it looks like a cake that missed the mark but I'm not sure what the mark was.

Fupa · 10/07/2022 12:47

That last photo looks like there’s a massive crack in it.

Newpuppymummy · 10/07/2022 12:50

£25

Bonjovispjs · 10/07/2022 12:53

That's the ugliest cake I've ever seen, I agree with the pp who said it looks mouldy cheese, still hopefully it tastes nice.

blebbleb · 10/07/2022 12:54

I'd say £70

blebbleb · 10/07/2022 12:55

Professionally made cakes are expensive. £30 would barely cover the ingredients!!!

Fladdermus · 10/07/2022 12:57

I'm an ex baker and happily pay a good price for a well made cake as I know the work that goes into them. Based on looks alone I wouldn't pay for either of those cakes. They don't look good at all.

Regarding the price difference between small businesses and commercial bakers, it's not just ability to buy bulk, it's also the ingredients used. I could bang out the sponges for 50 birthday cakes in an hour. We had big sacks of sponge mix that you just add water to, whizz it up in the swimming pool sized bowl and all go into the oven together. At home I'd be using eggs and sugar and flour and it'd take a lot of time. There is very little in a commercial bakery that is made from scratch.

WorkEvent · 10/07/2022 12:58

A friend’s daughter made me a much more attractive, larger cake for £30 but it’s a hobby, rather than a business. I’d expect to pay £45-50 (but wouldn’t).
