Durham City itself is even tinier than it looks on a map. Fram used to be a mining village thst was pretty much just the terraces around front street. Lots have been demolished. Durham Moor, sandwiched between Fram and Dryburn road is all 1930s houses, so an estate much like Newton Hall, just much smaller. I have the original deeds and documents for my own house in the area, dating to 1934 - purchased with a mortgage of £475.

On front street, the Fram /pity me border is signposted around the Sjovoll centre and the flats opposite but the GP surgery address is listed as Pity Me.

If you head from Greggs the other way to Arnison then Newton Hall starts at the traffic lights by the vet and is everything to the right of you until you get to the Abbey leisure centre. The left hand side of old Pit Lane is Pity Me for most of its length but the border isn't marked on that side.

Gilesgate is more confusing. That entire area between leazes road and Belmont and Dragonville is Gilesgate. Only the main roads and. Few outlying areas are older housing and it's fairly dotted about. Gilesgate includes the Sherburn Road estate (shudder) on one side and Gilesgate Moor on the other and that includes the High Grange estate which is the one which is a carbon copy of the Newton Hall estate, just with bigger gardens.

The sunflower and maize maze sounds brilliant for children. Mind you I hate maze’s I can never find my way out and I end up having a panic attack. Always need to know why the exits are me. Ridiculous I know.
Durham is looks bit sad at moment, we went today. Very impressed with Waterstones. Love the new decor.

The secret in a maize is to always turn left at any junction. Eventually you get out.

AlviarinAesSedai · 02/08/2023 22:54

Is it? Always turn left. I will have to try and remember that, I need an Air tag for an iPhone. Ready don’t understand how or why people like them.

I remember reading that as a kid, but tried it once at maize maze a few years ago and it didn't work. Perhaps it depends on the maze design? Or I messed up somewhere. It worked on the ones in puzzle books when I tried itso definitely worth a go. I do love a maze.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone.

I was probably a bit harsh on Bishop. There are some decent areas and my parents live there.
The Catholic school is good and has a 6th form but the others don't as I recall. It's off to Bishop college or Darlington and Durham.

Houses wise avoid at all costs Woodhouse estate.

The town is meant to be getting more investment and a refrurb but the main Street all the shops have moved to tindle. It's all cheap shops and chazzers now. It's been a while since I've been though as usually just pass through.

It does sound like the advice from the others is setting you up well for a look.

PickAChew · 03/08/2023 14:19

Sad to see that Finbarrs has closed :(

twistyizzy · 03/08/2023 14:24

lifelongfrugaleer · 02/08/2023 18:09

Having lived and worked there keep Bishop Auckland ruled out. Twas a dump then, not much better now

Agreed

TheSummerySilveryPussycat · 03/08/2023 15:36

Perhaps Durham can't support both Finbarr's and Coarse...

AlviarinAesSedai · 03/08/2023 17:16

Sad about Finbarrs, but their social media was rubbish. And with being out of town opposite hospital, I kept forgetting they were there!
I think being in city centre would have helped them.
Isn’t Bishop getting loads of money spent on it?

AlviarinAesSedai · 05/08/2023 17:54

The weather is awful. Autumn is here

lifelongfrugaleer · 05/08/2023 18:04

Apparently yes there is loads of Bishop regeneration

QuestionableMouse · 05/08/2023 18:09

Had the doggo out to Seaton today and had to rush back to the car because he was shivering badly, even in his rug! Horrible heavy rain - I had my big winter coat on and still felt a bit chilly! Was 10c according to the car! 😩

Looked properly wintery out to sea!

It was sunny, I would have loved to have gone to Seaham food festival.
Your poor dog, looks like winter.

QuestionableMouse · 05/08/2023 18:20

It was bloody freezing and felt like winter!

Doggo tax 🤣

lifelongfrugaleer · 05/08/2023 18:37

Bloody awful here. All. Day

AlviarinAesSedai · 05/08/2023 18:49

Love the 🐶. So cute

Whiskeypowers · 05/08/2023 19:16

@QuestionableMouse what a lovely dog!
mine won’t go out in the rain at all. I have to put her kea din and drag her out for a wee .
fortunately had a quick break in the bloody rain to take her out quickly today.
cannot believe how awful the weather is

@RagzRebooted how is the house hunt going ? A couple more to rent on Newton Hall and around but none four beds. Hope you manage to find somewhere!

PickAChew · 05/08/2023 20:58

He's adorable, @QuestionableMouse !

It's felt like September. I booked a bounce for Ds2 for today and his carer left almost immediately with him because it was full of stir crazy kids going wild.

QuestionableMouse · 05/08/2023 21:14

Thank you! He's 11 now and still acts like a puppy! 😍

My heating keeps coming on - it's set to 18c! 😭

SinnerBoy · 05/08/2023 21:48

We drove from North of the Tyne to Huntingtonshire today. There were a lot of heavy showers, with awful drivers blasting past.

It was less than 90 minutes to Wetherby Services and then 4 & 1/2 hours for the next leg, almost halfway. We joined two traffic jams, one because of a contraflow near Barnsley, the second because people were queueing at the Sleaford turn off!

About five miles of the buggers!

TheSummerySilveryPussycat · 05/08/2023 22:51

My heating came on too!
DDog is lovely.
I'm staying put till the weather improves...

SinnerBoy · 06/08/2023 08:16

It's sunny and warm here, near Huntington. I'm getting the train back today, because of work, my wife and daughter are staying on with Nan & Granddad.

I wonder what it'll be like when I get home.

AlviarinAesSedai · 06/08/2023 09:15

Suns out, we’ll see how long it lasts. 😆

Whiskeypowers · 06/08/2023 12:01

I thought I was hallucinating when I saw that it was sunny this morning.
already clouding over 🙈

AlviarinAesSedai · 06/08/2023 12:22

I’ve already got my washing out.
