What is your summer holiday budget?

I know people on here find it crass to talk about money and holidays… let alone both in one thread!

But I’ve just booked accom abroad for the first time in 5 yrs and I’m having a freak out when looking at costings for everything else!… Fuel for driving to the alps mainly!

I have a £3000 budget for 2 weeks, but I’m struggling!

Honestly, this year it's about 5k for 4 people for a week. Would have been less but need flights from multiple countries.

The cost of flights is through the roof, as well as everything else.

NewIdeasToday · 09/07/2022 23:25

How many people is your £3k budget for?

Blankbias · 09/07/2022 23:28

Is that for just flights and accommodation?

TheChosenTwo · 09/07/2022 23:31

We aren’t going anywhere this year (again 😭) so instead have allocated half of our usual holiday budget to have day trips and a few U.K. city stays.
As a family of 5 we usually spend between 8-10k on a 2 week summer holiday. Europe, villa, pool, car, day trips and meals out. It all adds up!
None of the 3 dc have passports which they could fly on so we are sadly staying put.

SavingsThreads · 09/07/2022 23:32

£10k!!!!

Good lord. We're spending £2k on a holiday for 7 in a beautiful seaside house in the U.K.!

AdoraBell · 09/07/2022 23:33

Zero, same as the last five years.

Anyway, enough about me. Hope you enjoy your holiday OP (genuinely no sarcasm intended)

Offandonagain · 10/07/2022 06:35

The 3 k is for 4 people. Air bnb in the Alps £900 Travel £900 (inc fuel, tolls and shuttle), Lift passes £400.

Offandonagain · 10/07/2022 06:37

Oh insurance is £200

I’ve not paid for anything yet

backaftera2yearbreak · 10/07/2022 06:37

£1080 for me and my partner to come to a 4 star half board hotel 15 mins outside of Paphos. Flew from Newcastle. Booked 5 weeks ago on TUI last minute holiday page.

backaftera2yearbreak · 10/07/2022 06:38

Insurance was £50, brought £500 each to spend but hardly touched it.

Workyticket · 10/07/2022 06:40

We've paid £4200 for 3 weeks 5 star A.I in Turkey for 3 of us

Felt like a huge amount of money to shell out at the time but realise now it was an amazing price.

brown543 · 10/07/2022 06:44

Up to £10k for a week for four of us. Although usually more like £6-7k. We're frugal on things like clothes relative to our income but I really enjoy holidays. We also use airmiles and a credit card voucher to buy flights so some saving there, although the taxes on business class flights aren't cheap for long haul.

That said, our last two overseas holidays were cancelled at the last minute. The first year we stayed was a flat in Newquay and the second an Airbnb near Bournemouth, both of which we really enjoyed.

Pootle40 · 10/07/2022 06:44

£8k 2 weeks AI in 5 star hotel in Turkey. 2 adults 2 kids (7, 12).

Offandonagain · 10/07/2022 06:56

How do you guys pay for it?

£3k is all our holiday savings. It’s taken us since last year to save!

OP posts:
LondonLovie · 10/07/2022 07:06

£4500 for 9 nights all inclusive Portugal. We have only afforded it this year as my Mother gave us £2k towards it (from some inheritance ) and saved the rest. Had a shock when it came to that much tbh, but it seems to be the going rate

wibblywobblybits · 10/07/2022 07:16

Honestly it's all relative depending on what sort of thing you deem a "holiday". This is an anonymous forum so I will openly admit, we are holiday snobs. I won't stay somewhere unless its nicer than my own house, I don't like villas as I don't like tidying up after myself on holiday - I do that enough at home! I also don't like all inclusives as a big part of holidays for me is eating out and enjoying lovely restaurants. We recently went to Dubai and for 2 weeks with 2 adults, 1 toddler and 1 baby and it was about £7k for flights and hotel. Husband & I are going to Mykonos next week for 1 week, and so far it's cost us the same as 2 weeks in Dubai with the kids!

Holidays are a luxury for a reason, I'd rather not go anywhere at all than go somewhere that doesn't feel like a proper break. We would prefer to spend more money and do it properly.

megletthesecond · 10/07/2022 07:18

Zero. Just petrol to stay with family at the coast.
I can't afford a decent UK holiday and have no desire to do a cheap and cheerful overseas beach holiday.

Workyticket · 10/07/2022 07:21

How do you guys pay for it?

We were lucky to be able to clear our overdrafts during Covid (I know lots of people really struggled but we were incredibly lucky. Incomes stayed the same but outgoings went down)

We started saving £150 each per month for holidays which we've never been able to do before

We've kept that up with some lifestyle changes to allow it and hope to continue to.

Summerwhereareyou · 10/07/2022 07:25

They have more savings?
Op you could have flown for far less if you had booked easy jet flights the moment they came out.
We donfjis and for family 4 usually get flights for between 200/300.
Air b and b or b.and b ....

Usually half self cater and eat one meal out a day.

We save first and then see what we can afford

DockOTheBay · 10/07/2022 07:28

We have had 2 holidays so far this year.
£500 for accomodation in Devon and probably £200 on food, fuel and activities (fuel was cheaper back then!)

£0 for accomodation in Cornwall (stayed with family) and again probably £200ish on fuel and activities.

£250 for accomodation in Oxford (camping), £50 for food and activities.

£150 for accomodation in the New Forest (camping) and £50 for food and activities.

We've also done a couple of weekends away, also camping, in the New forest and Swanage.

I will round up and say our overall holidays have probably cost about £2k but split over the year we got about 5 weeks of holiday in total so not bad going.

Summerwhereareyou · 10/07/2022 07:28

Unlike wobbly above holiday for me is going somewhere for a change of scene.

So we have stayed in yha usually beautiful buildings, but bedroom's not amazing but DC love it and it gets them away, games room....they can run around and relax.

At this time of year they so 25% off offer's.

GrandSlamFinalee · 10/07/2022 07:30

I’m paying around £550 for 4 nights in NY, with spending money it will get to £700/800 total. Flights already covered by a work trip.

I’m then doing Malmö and Copenhagen with a friend for 4 days. Flights £120, accommodation £120, spends will be £150 max I expect.

I pay for it from savings. Do a lot of free walking tours, free museums, cheap meals out or supermarket sandwiches.

glamourousindierockandroll · 10/07/2022 07:30

I'm not going until next year, I hope, but I think I'll need in the region of £5000 for a family of four.

I'd like to do a Eurocamp in France.

Summerwhereareyou · 10/07/2022 07:30

So op you could have shaved 600 off with flying

glamourousindierockandroll · 10/07/2022 07:33

In terms of how I'll pay, we're clearing old debts at the moment, and then I want to funnel some of that money towards a holiday savings account. We'll pay for it on credit card for the protection but pay it off in full. It'll be about £420 per month to achieve that budget.
