What is your summer holiday budget?

I know people on here find it crass to talk about money and holidays… let alone both in one thread!

But I’ve just booked accom abroad for the first time in 5 yrs and I’m having a freak out when looking at costings for everything else!… Fuel for driving to the alps mainly!

I have a £3000 budget for 2 weeks, but I’m struggling!

We were doing 10 days for £2k - as have also booked ski-ing in Dec. Thats flights to Italy, car hire, 5 days cheap stay with friends, 5 days apartment in Lake Garda, some spends. But easy jet changed/cancelled our flights three times so is now 14 days with city breaks either end and will be nearer £3k

Offandonagain · 10/07/2022 06:56

How do you guys pay for it?

£3k is all our holiday savings. It’s taken us since last year to save!

We're fortunate to have a good income. It's the only thing we splurge on (other than the house). We spend next to nothing on clothes (I'm currently wearing a T-shirt that's twenty years old).

We've said no to group holidays on cost though. We go on group ski holidays and our friends have booked a (fairly ordinary but with lots of childcare and activities) hotel which is £12k for a week's accommodation without flights. We've declined to go on that one as it's not worth it for us.

We know we're lucky and how tough it is for some people to find spare money for a holiday. My brother's last holiday was £100 for a caravan.

Ilikewinter · 10/07/2022 07:39

Pre covid we'd easily spend £5k on our 2 week main holiday then probably another £2k on shorter trips.
Post covid and now we habe a dog Ive lost the appetite for travelling abroad, so we are discovering the delights of the UK, 2 trips this year have cost approx £800 all in and we've 2 more booked but in much nicer accommodation which is costing £1300 🙈.
Either way compared to our previous spend of £8k we are quids in.

orbitalcrisis · 10/07/2022 07:41

£1000 for accomodation and travel. Eurotunnel, diesel and 3 weeks in a 3 bedroom cottage on the coast in Denmark. Food can be more expensive there but if you're careful it's no more than at home if you self cater.

Bearsan · 10/07/2022 08:00

We've just had a week in Greece £1100 for both of us 4* half board.
We've got another week booked for Spain in September £1000 4* half board. We spend more on Winter holidays as we like to go long haul in January and March.

Figgygal · 10/07/2022 08:04

We were due to go turkey AI may half 2adults 2 kids booked last may £1800

Cancelled at the gate no other options
Looked at summer holidays to rebook add at least another grand on.....im not doing it

Prices are insane this year

OldTinHat · 10/07/2022 08:16

I've not been on a holiday for about 7yrs but am splashing out on a coach trip for £250 in October!

Nearlyadoctor · 10/07/2022 08:20

£3700 for 12 days in Florida staying at Universal studios. That’s for 2 adults and 1 15 yr old. Direct flights with Virgin, staying at Loews Sapphire Falls hotel. Universal tickets plus one night at Magic Kingdom for Mickeys not so scary Halloween party were £1000 on top.
We’ll take another £1500 for food etc.

mizzo · 10/07/2022 08:24

We haven't been anywhere since 2018 so currently have a big budget.
I'm not bothered about going on holiday though and DH will never plan one so I don't know if we'll actually go anywhere.

@wibblywobblybits
Do you stay in hotels? I always stick to villas as hotels never feel as luxurious but maybe I've never stayed in the right ones.

RhubarbFairy · 10/07/2022 08:47

glamourousindierockandroll · 10/07/2022 07:30

I'm not going until next year, I hope, but I think I'll need in the region of £5000 for a family of four.

I'd like to do a Eurocamp in France.

You won't need that much @glamorousindierockandroll

We do Eurocamp in France every year in August. We're a family of 4. We budget around £2000 for that.

Caravan accommodation is usually between £1000 and £1200 for between 5 and 7 nights. You can book your ferry crossing at the same time as your accommodation via Eurocamp. Eurocamp offer better rates than booking with P&O directly.

Accommodation rates vary depending on the caravan you choose. Aspect is the top range and Classic is the bottom range. The parc we go to has Lodges too. Circa £1800 for 6 nights.
The price reflects the range. We've stayed in them all over the last 7 years and would stay in any one of them again. They are all well maintained and clean.

Then it's just fuel, tolls and spending money (admittedly fuel is more expensive this year).

We go to La Croix de Vieux Pont. Tolls cost 15€ each way to get there.

We budget £100 a day spending money and we buy our food from the well stocked and reasonable local Intermarche. We don't factor that food shopping into our holiday budget as it part of our usual monthly budget (we'd have to buy food if we stayed home anyway).

We don't always spend that full £100 a day. The site we go to has a great pool and a man made beach and lagoon, so the DC spend the majority of their time at one of those. There are paid activities on parc but you can buy a card for about 70€ with an activity value of 100€ and it covers the quad bikes, trampolines, bungees, pedalos etc. We usually buy one when we arrive and the DC know that when it runs out, it's done.

Look for last minute deals too. We went to Les Ormes in Brittany in May. We booked it Friday evening and arrived on parc at midday on Sunday. 4 nights, including ferry crossing, the price we paid on the Eurocamp site was £185.
With fuel, tolls, meals out and other spending, it was about £1000 total. Could have been cheaper if we'd bought food to cook in, but we opted to just eat out for most meals.

Les Ormes is very similar to Centreparcs in terms of the pool and offered activities. Amazing pool complex.

Indoctro · 10/07/2022 08:50

We are doing 9 days

Mon Friday on a canal boat, then some days in hotel and then in a yurt

£2500 for accommodation then I've budgeted another £400 for fuel

£1000 for eating out etc

So £4000 for family of 4 in England for ours

We live in Scotland.

MumUndone · 10/07/2022 09:00

Holiday prices are ridiculous. £1.5k on UK caravan holiday for 4 of us, and then £6k to canary islands later in the year.

RhubarbFairy · 10/07/2022 09:01

Offandonagain · 10/07/2022 06:56

£3k is all our holiday savings. It’s taken us since last year to save!

We're fortunate that DH is a high earner (not me, I'm a TA!).

Our mortgage is currently a low-ish amount per month, though that will change with interest rates changing soon. Our cars are 10 years old and we don't hugely spend in other areas. We love a bargain and preloved things.

It hasn't always been like this. Our first few holidays were 5 nights at a Parkdean site during term time. And they were absolutely brilliant. Now we're restricted to school holidays and Parkdean is actually more expensive than Eurocamp in August, so it's cheaper to go abroad.

We keep our summer holiday low because we ski in the winter and that's naturally a more expensive holiday. We love skiing and would give up the summer holiday and possibly other things to make that happen.

I do fully appreciate that it's DH that makes it happen though. If we budgeted based on my income and us contributing an equal amount, our holidays would look very different.

HelloAllll · 10/07/2022 09:03

We have paid 1,100 for a week all inclusive at a 4* canaries hotel. 2 adults, 2 child

Campolini · 10/07/2022 09:09

We've been for a week in lanzarote in November (2.5k) , we've had 10 days in Majorca (3.5k) and we have Florida booked for May, which tbh is horrendously priced 🥺

Usually per year it's about 3-5k depending on how long/place

IsAnybodyListening · 10/07/2022 09:30

Family of 4 here, DD22 and DS17. We are going to Spain for 18 days. Flights, luggage and parking is just over 1.5k. Luckily we are visiting my dm and dsd and they have a guest house and pool so no cost for us there. Will take 1.5k in euros so roughly 3k all in.

Afterfire · 10/07/2022 09:31

We are going abroad for the first time as a family next year. We’ve paid £3.5k for a week in Ibiza in a 4 star all inclusive resort for the 4 of us. We’re going in term time so it’s cheaper than it would be otherwise. We will just pay the fines!

We are also having a Haven break. £450 for 4 nights. Just a change of scenery really. Ds aged 10 has autism and absolutely loves a Haven break.

With the Ibiza trip we’ve paid for it on credit card (no interest) and we’re paying it off month by month so by the time it gets here it will be paid off.

Offandonagain · 10/07/2022 09:45

Summerwhereareyou · 10/07/2022 07:25

They have more savings?
Op you could have flown for far less if you had booked easy jet flights the moment they came out.
We donfjis and for family 4 usually get flights for between 200/300.
Air b and b or b.and b ....

Usually half self cater and eat one meal out a day.

We save first and then see what we can afford

We’re taking bikes. It’s a mtb holiday. Now way I’n sticking my bike on a flight! It’s my pride and joy and worth more than my car 🤣

We are using part of the 2020 Florida holiday budget which was fully refunded to go to Greece this year. DD is 15 and it got really expensive finding a hotel which gives us a room set up without a sofa bed for her.

After 4 years of self-catering and unreliable weather we really want a lazy luxery one.

Always hotels, I feel the opposite! Villas never feel luxurious, I like the added benefits of hotels, nice breakfast, drinks round the pool, getting back to the room after a long day with your bed made and fresh towels. You really can't beat it. We went to Ibiza earlier in the summer and stayed in Oku which was beautiful - not cheap but definitely not the most expensive compared to Nobu hotel for example.

In Dubai we stayed in Al Naseem which is one of the nicer ones, and in Mykonos we are staying in cavo tagoo. We have stayed before and loved it so it's a safe bet for us.

I’m the same. I love a nice hotel. Villas etc just feel like another house for me to clean up / cook in etc etc. If I’m on holiday I don’t want to do any of that!

AmberGer · 10/07/2022 10:00

We will be spending roughly £2k on a week in UK school hols, that includes accommodation, fuel, spending money (everything!)
2 adults, two 16 year olds and one ten year old

MilitantFaucet · 10/07/2022 10:03

We're blowing £5000 on a nice villa for 4 of us for 2 weeks in the south of France. We're driving down, staying in cheap hotels en route which will add another £1000 then I budget about £150 a day whilst we're there (self catering with the odd lunch out). It is our last family holiday before Uni and we've cancelled 2 long haul holidays in the last 3 years so we're ready for it. Just because some people don't want to splurge on a holiday doesn't make it wrong.

ShowOfHands · 10/07/2022 10:09

We are going camping in Devon for a week which is £20 a night for our pitch and then food/day out costs on top. And then 4 days elsewhere in the UK which is costing us £40 a night for a family room in a youth hostel.

MackenCheese · 10/07/2022 10:16

Holiday camp in France is costing about 3.5k for 10 days for 4 of us. That includes ferry crossing, road tolls, and 5 star accommodation chalet-style in a riverside location. The kids then have options of one of the pools or swimming in the river. Like pp said, if it doesn't feel like a luxury there's no point.
