What is your summer holiday budget?

I know people on here find it crass to talk about money and holidays… let alone both in one thread!

But I’ve just booked accom abroad for the first time in 5 yrs and I’m having a freak out when looking at costings for everything else!… Fuel for driving to the alps mainly!

I have a £3000 budget for 2 weeks, but I’m struggling!

How do you guys pay for it?

£3k is all our holiday savings. It’s taken us since last year to save!

The simple answer I that people have different incomes and different outgoings than others.

Some people earn high salaries and have no mortgage so can afford to spend several thousand on multiple holidays a year. Others have smaller salaries, have a hefty mortgage, high childcare costs, etc so can spend little (if anything) in a holiday.

I'm very lucky to be able to have a number of holidays of varying costs each year these days. I've also been in the position where we were lucky to afford one week away done on a small budget, and also some years where we simply couldn't afford a holiday full stop when growing up.

Abraxan · 10/07/2022 10:35

Some people are also completely limited to school holidays and, therefore much higher, travel and accommodation costs.
Not everyone can travel mid week so easily too, which is another way to save costs as Friday and weekend flights are often a fair bit dearer than say a Tuesday/Wednesday.

For example, Dd has just been to Milan for £30 return flights. The same flights, actually at worse time slots, a few weeks later in school holidays were almost £300 return. For a weekend in school holidays the fiat was even more.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 10/07/2022 10:43

May half term a week in a holiday cottage by the sea, under £k including travel and spends

A fortnight SC in Mallorca in August for 4, £4000 plus probably £2k on eating out

A few nights in Ibiza SC in October, about £2000 for travel and £500 spending money

Well quite, we could have the same holiday much cheaper if we weren't tied to holidays (teacher). Looking forward to retirement and out of season holidays!

I'm a shoe steering budget holiday shopper. We went to Rome for a week in July. 5 of us. Flights were £50 each return and the caravan was £40 each. I took £400 ( me and 1 teen). So less than £300 each for a week in Rome.

Next week we are off to Greece. Flights return for 3 of us £270. Accommodation is £700. Transfers are £30. Taking £1000 spends so £2000 for two weeks abroad.... £330 a week all in. Near the beach, big pool, self catering apartments and we will be eating out most nights. Very easy to manage on a budget of €70 a day.

etulosba · 10/07/2022 10:59

So op you could have shaved 600 off with flying

If the OP needs to hire a car when they get there, the saving isn’t that much.

Always hotels, I feel the opposite! Villas never feel luxurious, I like the added benefits of hotels, nice breakfast, drinks round the pool, getting back to the room after a long day with your bed made and fresh towels. You really can't beat it.

We've stayed in some amazing villas. For me I love having a private pool and lots of space, that's what gives a villa the luxury feel to me. Getting up before anybody else and having a swim on my own followed by a wander to pick up pastries for breakfast is just blissful.
I am weird about people touching my things so someone making my bed feels intrusive not luxurious to me. I always keep the dos not disturb sign on when we've been to hotels in the past.
I'm fully aware I'm in the minority though, DH and the DC are keen on a hotel stay so thanks for the recommendations.

Robostripes · 10/07/2022 11:27

We’re going to the Canary Islands, just over £3000 for a week for three of us, me, DH and 6 year old DS. It’s half board but I’ll budget another £100 a day for lunch, ice creams, days out etc.

I’m a fairly high earner but now the sole breadwinner. Pre-Covid, when both of us were working, we’d book a holiday and pay it from spare income over a few months. Now, we don’t have so much spare income but I usually get a decent annual bonus so that pays for the holiday.

Lots of my friends happily spend 8-10k on a holiday but I can’t bring myself to spend that much. DS is just as happy with a bucket and spade on a UK beach. Even spending £3k this year hurts a bit (pre covid we could go outside of school holidays so was cheaper!)

00865jkk · 10/07/2022 11:30

Why are you paying for ft passes? seems bonkers. I budget 1,500 for a family of three. Depending on how long we go for - and how much money we have - we stay with friends, airbnb, a single hotel room. I dont see holidays are 'luxury' but an opportunity to go away somewhere else, so happy to go self-catering with only one meal out per day. We didnt go anywhere during Covid (obviously) my current plan is to travel abroad 2-3 times per year. We put aside 500 quid per month for holidays that is meant to cover accommodation and travel costs - and we pay for stuff we do while on holiday out of our monthly expenditure. In your case - unless you are going skiing (in the summer?) - dont bother with the lists. If you mean ski holiday - then ye they are expensive

KurriKawari · 10/07/2022 11:34

It's apples and pears. DD14 and I are going to Thailand for 2 weeks in summer, have already spent nearly £3k on flights and hotels. I could have easily done it cheaper or done it more expensive, depends what you're willing to pay.

BiFoldChampion · 10/07/2022 11:35

£6-8k 2 weeks France

TheChosenTwo · 10/07/2022 12:28

Yes we are tied to school holidays until 2 weeks time when I will have a job outside of school and will be able to book leave as and when I actually want which should in theory mean we can spend less on holidays. In reality, ds is only in year 5 at school so while dh and I might manage the odd term time break or I might go away with a friend, the reality is we will still be doing our main family holidays during the school holidays for years to come.

FreezyFreezy · 10/07/2022 12:50

We have a budget of fuck all and we're going nowhere other than a daytrip to Filey or Flamborough or Cleethorpes.

hairymuffet · 10/07/2022 12:57

2 full time workers here, no kids.
£600 caravan up north in September.
Obviously we are doing something wrong, because that is all we can afford 😯

shinynewapple22 · 10/07/2022 13:00

We are lucky that we no longer need to go away in school holiday time . If we did holiday in August it would be a week self catering in the UK - I would budget up to £1k for our accommodation.

Going abroad I would expect accommodation costs to be a little less as we would be out of season so may be £1k for 10 days. That would be for a two bedroom apartment with pool (or cottage in the UK). Holiday abroad would normally be somewhere like Spain / Italy and we would eat out once per day . We are going to Mallorca in September . 10 days for me and DH, and DS and his GF will join us for 5 days. We pay for accommodation and they pay their flights. Think we may need to economise a bit in future though and only book two bedroom if we know they are definitely joining us.

We would only use a hotel if staying somewhere for a day or so - I hate being cramped in one room and there is never enough storage space .

orbitalcrisis · 10/07/2022 07:41

£1000 for accomodation and travel. Eurotunnel, diesel and 3 weeks in a 3 bedroom cottage on the coast in Denmark. Food can be more expensive there but if you're careful it's no more than at home if you self cater.

That sounds really good value - is that in the main summer season ?

shinynewapple22 · 10/07/2022 13:02

That must have been devastating for you @Figgygal

prinnycessa · 10/07/2022 13:18

@wibblywobblybits agree with you completely, we have the same views.

DH and I went on holiday to SE Asia earlier this year and that cost us £5k.

We're going to another part of SE Asia in a couple of months and that will be £5/6k.

Our winter holiday early next year will cost £3.5/4K.

BoJoGoGo · 10/07/2022 13:27

This is my first year going on a summer holiday with just my DH and without our DC. We are going on a 10 day cruise and spending 4-4.5k. Usually our family summer holiday costs 10-14k. I have a 20k a year holiday budget, this year it will be more spread out through the year where as in previous years over half went on one summer holiday.

waltzingparrot · 10/07/2022 13:57

We've just come back. £3500 for ferry, s/c accommodation, food and fuel for 4 adults.

Apprenticedeg · 10/07/2022 14:12

We’re just back and our break down for 4 of us to to 5 days in New York and 9 days in Orlando.
we live in Ireland so most of the cost are in € (but the tickets for universal I bought through a U.K. company)
I booked the flights and hotels through a TA and paid €4500
Tickets for universal and Kennedy space centre £1450
We spent €200ish on airport parking and €200 on airport hotel
Spending money we spent €2k - that includes taxis and tours etc in New York and food.
So all in we spent approx 8.5k

Marymary987 · 10/07/2022 14:18

We had a mega holiday this year at Easter costing 18k for the 6 of us for a month, only possible as it was basically 3 years worth of holidays in one thanks to Covid.
We normally spend 5-6k a year on holidays.

boopdeflouff · 10/07/2022 15:20

We are traveling from the alps region to Devon. Why do you have £900 travel costs? I am driving and have budgeted half of that, Inc ferry for 6.

We then have £1200 accommodation (camping) and £1500 spends (self catering). But I do have an extra £1K Tucked away.

We usually spend £1500 twice a year on big out of season camping holidays, plus smaller eurocamp long weekend holidays whenever possible, but as we live in Europe, travel is easy.

I’ve averaged £500 for shuttle with the flexipass. It seems risky to go for a set time with the drive we have either side. Plus it made no financial difference if we did standard ticket and hotel nr shuttle station.

The fuel I’n thinking a 900 mile trip with tolls in a minivan with bikes on top. Our berlingo does around 400 miles to the tank… £100 to fill up so that’s about £500 for fuel return.

Then around £100 for tolls
