If you don't return your trolley at the supermarket, why is that?

A woman today, in a P&C space with no child (but that's a different argument) just let her trolley blow away after she'd put her shopping in the boot. I retrieved it and put it behind her car so she couldn't get out. She was raging!

Why do people not return their trolleys?

I do sometimes, especially for the ones you put a coin in, but for some others, if the trolleypark isnt close by, i dont bother.
Theres several reasons for this.

  1. Supermarkets pay people to collect the trolleys, and if they dont, then they should, as it always used to be a thing.
  2. It feels similar to me as self service checkouts and reduction of staff in many sectors.
  3. Sometimes they are really far away and its a faff.
  4. If ive just spent a fucking fortune in your store, picked my own stuff, packed my own bags and seen that most people are now even scanning their own shopping at the checkout too, then they can get fucked if they think im going to feel guilty because sometimes they have to pay someone to collect and tidy the trolleys and baskets.

Trolley collecting/returning is not a moral issue or a sign of character.

You lazy BLEEP 🤣🤣🤣 you sound entitled.

turquoise1988 · 10/07/2022 07:27

@Froodledo @coodawoodashooda @Dadschat I want to know how you would respond if, when you returned to your car, you realised that a trolley left by a customer other than yourselves had blown into your car and left a dent in it?

GreenWheat · 10/07/2022 07:27

Laughing my socks off at some of the deluded self justification on here. Just make the effort to take it back to the trolley park and stop being so lazy and selfish.

KatherineJaneway · 10/07/2022 07:27

For the same reason I boycotted self-service checkouts for many years

You couldn't shop in my local Tesco then. Saturday morning quite early, no tills were open. When they do open later on, the queues of those people with full trolleys means self service is the only option if you have a top up shop.

xsquared · 10/07/2022 08:07

Those who resent scanning their own shopping and CBA, why don't you shop online instead?

Less effort for you, no trolley to be put away. Win win.

So going back to my original reply…please can someone remind me about a child abduction in a supermarket car park whilst a parent taking the trolley back to trolley bay …I am so thick that I can’t remember the news!

Homegettinginvaded you certainly are not the sharpest tool in the box I agree with you on that. What a complete over dramatic thread. Talking about abduction cars on fire All because a mum left her trolley on one occasion with her pound in ONE OCCASION due to the situation she found herself in, no crime has been committed here, if you would rather lock your kids in the car on a hot day or strap your kids down leave the doors open while you return the trolley to the bay leaving your kids out of sight for however many minutes that's on you, many would not she did this one time FFS get some perspective and a life. I can't stand people like you trying to put a mother down because did what she felt was right in the circumstances you have taken something so small and made it into a big deal you cannot judge the situation you was not in the car park when it happened this mum explained the reason and yet you still won't let it go have you nothing better to do? What a loser. How many trolleys are left lying around carparks on any given day and yet you concentrating on the mum who had more than a good reason to do it on one occasion.

SomePosters · 10/07/2022 08:17

xippo · 09/07/2022 23:51

FFS it would be 5 mins max

But say you leave children in the car to pay for fuel and people will say it’s fine for your husband to pretend to abduct the kids to give you a fright

that thread pissed me off so much.

Dadschat · 10/07/2022 08:22

Yep, I’m not proud of it. It was emotional abuse. In a slightly aggressive tone I told the cat I loved the dog more. Repeatedly. It’s a poor show I know, but it’s better than leaving my trolley in the car park…

HappyHappyHermit · 10/07/2022 08:28

Sorry but 5 mins is 5 mins too long for me if not in sight. I wouldn't do it in a carpark or a petrol station or anywhere, I just wouldn't. Fine if some feel comfortable doing so but I never have.

Fizbosshoes · 10/07/2022 08:34

Haven't RTFT but I usually deliberately park near or next to a trolley bay so I don't have to walk "half the car park" although the tesco I generally use has lots of trolley bays so it's not a hike to get back to one

ChinBristles · 10/07/2022 11:28

@DarlingDarwin makes a good point - would you be embarrassed if someone you knew saw you abandon your trolley? That's a good test of whether you know deep down you are doing wrong!

And yet you're shaming mothers and putting them down for leaving their children alone for 30 seconds.

The reasons given here does not excuse anyone from common courtesy.

Do you also drop litter because a road sweeper is paid to clear it up at some point?

If it's such a faff for you to enter a store, pick your shopping, scan and pack, and then walk your trolley to the collection point, then why don't you just do an online shop and get it delivered?

Saves you time and the physical effort from doing all those things.

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2022 13:46

Our nearest large Waitrose do a Click and Collect service where you park in a designated bay, ring the store and they bring the shopping to you. You pop your boot and they put it in. No trolley required, or even getting out of the car if you don't want to...

serenghetti2011 · 10/07/2022 13:52

I don’t get the big deal about putting them back. Someone drove into one of our trolley parks so there’s only 2 in full carpark and the area at the door. Only time it’s a pain is if it’s pissing it down but a short walk with a trolley isn’t a big deal. Laziness! I park miles from the shop anyway.

newbiename · 10/07/2022 13:53

MiniMoosey · 09/07/2022 16:50

What? Every trolley I’ve seen has a brake

Never seen a trolley with a brake

Never seen a trolley with a brake

I have seen some with but most don't in my experience.

HappyHappyHermit · 10/07/2022 14:07

Most have breaks, just very small.

I'll have a look tomorrow. I only ever use a shallow trolley and I've never seen one on those.

HouseOfEssex · 10/07/2022 14:30

I read somewhere once that this is the mark of a "good person" - returning their shopping trolley when no one is watching

Branleuse · 10/07/2022 14:41

BalloonsAndWhistles · 10/07/2022 12:07

You sound so entitled

Entitled to what?
Entitled to do my shopping in peace and expect there to be human staff making it easier when it needs to be?
Do you wash the dishes when you go to a restaurant too

Notanotherwindow · 10/07/2022 14:54

Entitled to some poor kid on minimum wage to run round after you like a servant so you don't have to walk a few metres and put away the trolly that you got out. He or she doesn't care how much you spent. Just be a decent human and pick up after yourself ffs. Even my 18 month old niece knows that if she gets her toys out she has to put them away after.

This is why everyone hates retail. Entitled lazy customers making a mess and just fucking off and leaving it for lower mortals to sort out because they think they're somehow better and deserve to have everything done for them. Why don't you make their life easier for once instead?

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2022 14:59

Do you wash the dishes when you go to a restaurant too

How is that a comparison? you can very easily take a trolley back to the bay, not so much getting into the kitchen in a restaurant to load the dishwasher. ConfusedBut you can make the table easier to clear if you are so inclined.
