FLIES! My house seems full of them

Ive no idea where they are coming from. They seem to congregate downstairs and a few upstairs. They must be getting in somewhere but no idea where. Garage is fly free. Bins have nothing rotting in them. Cupboards are fly free. Kill half a dozen and then half a dozen more appear.

Any ideas on where they are coming from. No one I k ow has this problem.

We had the same a few weeks ago. Suddenly loads of flies. We thought they were coming from the chimney. We had chimney cleaned and swept, there was the remains of a birds nest but nothing else. No more flies since thank god!

Are you near any stables? When I lived in Newmarket, I was plagued by them

kewgirl · 08/07/2022 12:57

Had similar issue there was a nest somewhere
Got a pest controller in sorted easily

We used to have this every year in one house. Not fun. Think we resorted to fly spray.

ConsuelaHammock · 08/07/2022 13:43

Red top fly catcher will catch and kill them.

Do you have a cat?

If so, it works like this. Cat brings in something dead and hides it 'for later'. Cat then forgets about their precious treasure and no-one is any the wiser until....... The House is Full of Flies Sad

What kind of flies? I was inundated with fruit flies, more came as soon as I killed them off. Finally worked out they were breeding in some old potatoes I’d forgotten about 🤢 removed the potatoes, cured the problem!

We were plagued with tiny flies, especially in the kitchen. I kept complaining to my husband that I thought they were fruit flies and didn't know where they were coming from.

It was only after weeks/ months of this that I happened to be in his home office closing a window and nudged a plant pot when a cloud of them flew up from the soil! He'd known about them the whole time but hadn't put 2 and 2 together. The plant went out that day and problem solved.

I've had it with kitchen potted herbs too.

We had this problem last year and it was horrible. We got an electric fly swatter on amazon but then had to deal with the clean up off all of the flies on the floor Envy then one day they must've just disappeared because we don't have them anymore.

Check for food behind fridge/sofa or any cupboard where old fruit and veg might be hiding.

Any rat problem? Lots of blue bottles is a sure sign of something nasty in the woodshed....

cottagegardenflower · 08/07/2022 14:57

Just normal black flies. Smallish and all look the same. Not blue or green ones.
No cat
No stables
No rats.

I'm sure there is a breeding source somewhere, but no nasty rotting smell. We had a hedgehog die behind our cooker years ago, and that was rank, so definitely not anything dead.

I'll check the potatoes, as things do get left in the bottom of the pantry
