Landlord selling up and can't afford to rent elsewhere

Freeasabird76 · 07/07/2022 23:09

Dont know the point of this post to be honest, just need to vent I think.
Have lived in this house with my 2 Dds for 5 years now and been very lucky with no rent increases, although the rent was a bit steep when j first moved in,it is now the cheapest in the whole area.
My landlords visited today to do an inspection and dropped the bombshell that they're selling up asap.
My dilemma is,equivalent homes are now £200 more than I'm paying now a month and at present only 2 available in whole area anyway.
How can if ve that I've lived here all my 46 years and now I can't afford a house here anymore.

Lol. I do. I probably earn 6 or 7 times your salary. I deal with my children's university accommodation landlords.

No dear, you really don’t. That’d put you well into seven figures.

It’s strange how you were saying on another thread how you’ve lost access to your child if you are a great parent in a high-flying job.

Almost as though you are making it up as you go along.

So which is it, great parent on a million pounds a year, or the absent father asking for advice as to how to forget your child?

rainbowunicorn · 17/07/2022 13:39

Can you get overtime at work or a second job to make up the difference in what you pay now in rent compared to what a similar property will be?

If you can't get overtime at your current job then a part time position at 10 hours a week would easily cover the additional costs. A couple of evenings work, cleaning, bar work, waitressing, Call centre etc. The 16 year old could keep an eye on the 10 year old.

This is what I did in similar circumstances.

Fabulous update..Council has offered us a 3 bed a mile away, can walk my 10 year old to School from there so no moving schools, bit longer trek for 16 year old but she's ok with that, extra steps she said.So happy.

Loads of people turned it down as it's very high up steep bills but I don't drive so we are used to walking and living up hills.

Have you considered that the landlord might rely on this income? Ex. I rent out my property as I moved, but I pay rent towards where I live now. How can people be so selfish.

The advice wasn’t to stop paying rent. It was to continue paying rent, and stay in the property until evicted.

are you in uk ?
do not move out until evicted by court order, and bailiffs come.
that way, with children, you can seek housing from the council.
otherwise you will be regarded as having made yourself homeless, and they don't have to help you.
look up Shelter website for advice.
good luck

Yes, you need to take full advantage of our housing system now. Get a letter of eviction from the landlord and apply for the housing list. It could take a bit of getting but once you've got it you've got a permanent home. You can buy at a discount but you can also never buy, pay a reasonable amount of rent each month, the home is yours to modify within reason as you please, it's an assured tenancy. No paying for repairs or new boilers, but the home is still yours as long as you live.

You are in a very good position.

Selfish? So where do you expect tenants to go when they can’t find somewhere? Also, it’s the law and every landlord should be aware of that and plan for it, way ahead of needing to evict someone. If they aren’t aware, then they’re shit landlords who should never have been landlords in the first place.

Dear God - can you hear yourself?
Why on earth do you think landlords are selling up in droves?

NOBODY expected this to happen. Everybody who isn't in social (taxpayer subsided ) housing has seen their mortgages shoot up - are you really not aware of this?

Londongirl8922 · 16/11/2024 11:40

Hello, can anyway help please

My landlord called my partner this morning to say that he's selling the house and getting someone out in a week to survey it and is wanting to get it sold by April..we actually don't have any kind of extra funds right now ..I've dropped to part time as we have a 2 year old so until he's in school I can only work evenings whilst my partner works in the day full time..my partners lived here for 13 years and private renting is about £500 more than what we are paying now ..we literally have no extra money to pee in let alone pay out for moving costs ect would the local council be able to help us ? Can anyone advise me what to do..stressed beyond belief

SaltandPepper22 · 16/11/2024 18:38

@Londongirl8922 i suggest you make your own thread with a bit more info about where you live, what your tenancy is and whether you have been issued with a S21. You should contact shelter for advice but the reality is that if you can’t afford to move you will have to wait to be evicted by the court.
