Do you get your boiler serviced annually?

Just that really. If you own your home do you get an annual service?

We didn't last year, just wondering if it's one of those things people never miss like a car service or if people don't bother.

Yes it is in the tenancy agreement as I'm a council tenant.

  • Just to add- a carbon monoxide sensor should never be next to your boiler- it should be 150mm above any door or window, 300mm away from a wall or ceiling and 1-3m away from the source of potential risk (the gas burning appliance)

Really handy to know thank you

GreenEyedDevil · 08/07/2022 06:27

I have an oil boiler and get it serviced every year.

Hiddenmnetter · 08/07/2022 06:31

@Isleoftights there are moving parts (pump), there’s also a header chamber that can lose charge and need repressurising.

The service should also include cleaning out the magclean, and checking your double or triple diverted valve (depending on your setup)

I cannot believe people don’t get their boiler serviced!! It’s just so dangerous not to! It’s not just about the hidden danger of carbon monoxide but the fact it could literally catch fire or blow up!

My mum was one of those people who never used to get her boiler serviced. She was at home one day watching Tv and smelt burning and found the boiler literally going up in flames! Thankfully as she was awake and home she was able to ring 999 but they told her as it hadnt been serviced it was full of muck and dust and dirt that had caught fire. Much like if you don’t clean out your tumble dryer from time to time!

You are literally playing with your family’s life if you don’t service your boiler - all for the sake of £60-90!! Per YEAR! Wtf! People spend more than that every month on all kinds of crap.

Its so irresponsible not to get it done.

No.....boiler is over 25 years old, never been 'serviced'. As there are no moving parts in a gas boiler, what is there to service ? Total con, save your money, and if and when it breaks down, then you call in someone to fix it.

You are completely wrong and putting your life and your family’s life in danger by not getting it serviced. How would you even know if it needs to be replaced? A boiler doesn’t just suddenly stop working if it’s dangerous.

Westfacing · 08/07/2022 07:39

I had a new boiler installed last November so will get it serviced annually or the 10 year warranty will be invalid.

Had the last boiler for 17 years and it was never serviced.

silvermarble · 08/07/2022 07:47

Yes we do and I’m shocked at those who haven’t in many years, they’re essential for safety reasons. Some years it’s a quick service and every few years it needs a thorough clean and parts replaced to keep it safe.

ifonly4 · 08/07/2022 07:55

Yes, engineer can pick up problems at an early stage and for safety. Also, there are certain parts that need cleaning and also we have a sort of drain pot, which engineer says needs emptying every couple of years otherwise excess has nowhere to go. Also, getting an engineer around here is a nightmare, so hopefully as we've employed regularly, they're more likely to come out.

OldTinHat · 08/07/2022 07:58

Never. The boiler is in my bedroom and I have a carbon monoxide alarm on top of it. I'm still alive and the boiler still works!

The carbon monoxide detector shouldn’t be on top of the boiler. Read through the thread to see why / where it should be.

Its extremely dangerous to have an unserviced boiler in your bedroom!

Afterfire · 08/07/2022 08:01

It makes me so angry to read so many people don’t get their boiler serviced. I could be living next door to one of you whose house could explode or catch fire putting my own family at risk because of sheer stupidity, ignorance and negligence.

You should have an carbon monoxide alarm anyway, but if not please get one. Even though carbon monoxide levels are checked during a service, our engineer pointed out one was essential as it rises and our DD sleeps immediately above.

I guess there's no pointing is saying you really should get it serviced, especially as it's an old boiler.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 08/07/2022 08:04

We didn't with our ancient obsolete boiler but when it was replaced we have had a yearly service done to preserve the guarantee.

BackToTheTop · 08/07/2022 08:07

Yes always, one of the first things I did when I moved was get it serviced

chilledbubble · 08/07/2022 08:09

I hope all the people who don't bother live in detached houses

Ratonastick · 08/07/2022 08:10

Mine is oil and I have it done every year. The previous owners never bothered with a service (5 years or so from installation) so the first time it was full of soot and the seals were practically shot. It made a massive difference to my oil usage so we’ll worth it on cost grounds as well as the obvious safety issue.

You’d hope so.

Hiddenmnetter · 08/07/2022 09:36

@HorribleHerstory I don’t have a husband so worry not. The only person touching it (illegally?) is me.

unfortunately any parts replacement not done by a suitably qualified gas safe engineer is illegal. Same as air con- has to be installed by an f-gas registered engineer. You can’t even buy the gas if you don’t have evidence of an f-gas certification.

Ours is probably done every 2-3 years. It just gets forgotten.

I disagree that people 'never miss' car services. People with new cars might get their cars serviced every year but there will be plenty of people with older cars who just get things fixed as they break but don't actually keep up with the service schedule.

Afterfire · 08/07/2022 10:42

Getting a car serviced is not the same thing as a boiler service. Every car needs to have an annual MOT to check it’s safe. That’s comparable with a boiler service.

stratforduponavon · 08/07/2022 10:48

I have a heat pump. Very specialised and not for the likes of British Gas. We have a annual maintenance plan with the manfacturer and a wireless connection so they can log onto to the boiler to see what is wrong.

I would not be without it.

Its rather like people who go without travel insurance because they are never ill and will be careful.

BMW6 · 08/07/2022 11:16

I am horrified at the number of people not getting the annual service.

If you want to risk your and your families lives, by all means crack on. But you are also putting close neighbours at risk by your irresponsible attitude.

Look up the recent gas explosions. Not just the home dwellers are killed.

Out of interest does everyone get their electrics fully checked every 10 years (EICR) like you are supposed to, I'm guilty of not as I didn't know and only had mine checked because I had a new consumer unit, I think the electrician was quite shocked that mine hadn't been looked at for about 30 years when it was last rewired.

I only had electrics checked for same reason as you, new consumer unit.

The people I bought the house from had never checked the electrics, and hadn't had the boiler serviced for 13 years... and had two small children.

Oblomov22 · 08/07/2022 17:50

No. Dh can do most of what is required, as in the servicing itself is quite basic. Then it just needs a check.
