We got my daughter a VW Polo. It's a lovely car, not too big, really safe and not too expensive to insure.

Hyundai i10
Ford Fiesta

If you can go electric, a Zoe is a nice little run-around.

If you Google "Honest John" he's likely to have some recommendations.

TheChosenTwo · 06/07/2022 22:16

We got dd a Fiat 500, she’s small and nippy, nothing dropped off her yet!
i feel like I’m driving a roller skate when I use it sometimes but it’s a good little runner.

Sunbird24 · 06/07/2022 22:20

I’ve got a little fiat 500 as well - 0 road tax, good on insurance and 50+ mpg for commuting. Plus it looks cute! Bit girly though so probably not going to appeal to everyone…

Our teens drive a Toyota aygo. No road tax and insurance not too bad as it’s only got a 1l engine.

SadLittleLife · 06/07/2022 22:27

For low insurance, you need to look for engine under 1 litre. Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108 all have models under 1000cc and some models pre 2017 I think are nil tax. Newer models will be £165 per year.
Put another, older driver with clean licence on insurance as additional driver but teen must be owner/main user/policyholder to earn their own No Claims.
Expect to fit a black box and check for any restrictions - mileage/curfews,etc

Yankydoodledandy · 06/07/2022 23:22

He's well over 6ft so not a Fiat 500 hus head would be touching the roof.

I did think a VW polo...@follygirl what model, engine does yr daughter have???

We’ve also bought a polo.

1.2 litre, 4 years old, five doors.

VW updated the polo in 2015, so cars from that date are slightly more up to date

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 07/07/2022 00:02

Audi A1

L1ttledrummergirl · 07/07/2022 00:44

We bought dd a mini today. She loves it.

balalake · 07/07/2022 07:15

Why not have him drive your car for a while, not one of his own?

Londonnight · 07/07/2022 07:19

Vauxhall Corsa. £20 a year tax. Great small car

Insuring teenagers to drive larger cars is often extortionate. I was quoted 4.5K to add my cousin to my Nissan Navarra ten years ago. Insured on a tiny fiat for £400 quid instead.

follygirl · 07/07/2022 08:12

@Yankydoodledandy
It's a Match TSI, I think it's 1.1 litre and it's 5 door.
It was brand new but despite that the insurance was about £1000 for her as the main driver and no black box.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 07/07/2022 08:16

It varies so much, even street-by-street sometimes.

An old neighbour of mine who has three sons always said ‘small and weird’ was the way to go. Small for a small engine, weird so it’s not the typical first driver car. His kids had oddities like a Peugeot 1007, Mazda Demio, Hyundai ix20 and Toyota Urban Cruiser.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 07/07/2022 08:17

(And I do mean 1007, not 107. Peugeot 1007 was a weird thing with sliding doors.)
