The whip - politics

A while ago after watching something on sky and I posted a thread asking someone to please explain what the "whip" was in parliament.

A few people kindly explained and I wanted to go back to my thread to re read what the Whip was a description was to better understand some current threads.

Can't fucking find it at all.

Would anyone please mind explaining again what the whip is in parliament.

Is it a person/group that "encourages" members of a party or different parties to vote one way or another for things that get raised?

All political parties have a whips office.

Essentially their job is act as enforcers to the cabinet/shadow cabinets decisions i.e. they vote according to the instructions of their political higher ups.

Whips use charm, bribery and even blackmail to get MP's to toe the line. To do this, they collect data on all MP's in their party. Who their allies are. Every tweet/SM post etc etc - basically anything that might be exploited in the future.

You want to be promoted into x job? Then vote y on this issue because we know z about you. You get the picture....

The Whips have the dirt on all the MP's (apart from the few that aren't actually "dirty").

It derives from the whippers-in who look after and marshall hounds out hunting

Thank you both. Does the whip police their own party or other parties also?

If it's the latter is there one grand master of all the whips?

I feel like this should be Grand Mistress of Whips...

I'm suddenly feeling the need to watch
Sir Ian Richardson play the Conservative Party Whip in "House of Cards".
