By a theatre environment, what do you mean? Backstage/scenery/FOH?

Jott · 05/07/2022 17:00

You'd probably be best off emailing individual theatres and asking if they can offer a placement, also try smaller community theatres/arts centres and performing arts schools who might be able to let him job-shadow the teaching staff.

PatriciaHolm · 05/07/2022 17:04

We've had lots of trouble trying to sort related placements this year as many organisations aren't taking under 18s, even if they have started placements again after covid, which many haven't. Try organisations individually.

You may struggle as most schools only allow them to do their work experience during "normal" working hours i.e not evenings and weekends. Just email every possible place you can think of and be creative, maybe look at Theatre Groups that go into primary schools etc rather than just actual theatres.

takeitandleaveit · 05/07/2022 17:14

They probably won't advertise any placements, otherwise they'd be totally inundated.

SpikyHatePotato · 05/07/2022 17:19

I think you might have trouble finding a work experience placement on the tech side - backstage in a theatre is a dangerous place, considered akin to a building site, and getting insurance and risk assessing the situation would be too problematic for most theatres.

You might get somewhere with Box Office/Marketing/General Management.

My DD was in local theatre arts group but they were all told by theatre that there were no placements until 18 due to health and safety.

Riverlee · 05/07/2022 18:45

If not a professional theatre, is there a local am dram group who maybe able to help her?

Theatre tour

Just googled and found this theatre tour. Quite fancy this myself!

ATG theatre work experience

Comefromaway · 05/07/2022 18:50

There is virtually nothing. ATG have a paid work experience programme in the summer holidays at some theatres, Disney don’t allow anyone backstage at the moment due to covid. My Ds arranged a couple of pit sit ins but they were ad hoc and he had to be over 16. His year 10 W/E he ended up doing in a music shop.

You might have more joy if you have an arts centre type place nearby. They sometimes do box office/marketing type placements.

AppleKatie · 05/07/2022 18:53

Try any regional theatre within a reasonable commutable distance. Take whatever you get, a foot in the door anywhere might lead to other things if he’s lucky.

Thanks all - really helpful 👍
