Woman wearing t-shirt with slogan 'I AM ENOUGH' written on it

I couldn't believe that a) anyone would buy such a thing and b) that they would then wear it.

She might as well have had emblazoned across her chest 'I have low self-esteem', not exactly something that I would want to advertise.

I've also seen this as a tattoo - on a woman of course.

Just why????

I will join you in the judgey corner, OP. Just us two awful, judgey women.:) I also judge people who call themselves "flaneurs", :thinkers" and "nomads" on social media.

I like it.
I think it shows confidence, rather than insecurity.

I had years of being told I wasn't enough, that day when I finally realised I was, was liberating

Nietzschethehiker · 04/07/2022 13:02

Oh for gods sake, on what planet do you think your personal preferences have any insight into what another human being is thinking? Truly this might be one of the most ridiculous threads yet.

Perhaps she liked the colour, perhaps she liked the fit, perhaps shockingly she doesn't see a random t shirt as being a litmus test for her mental health.

Honestly if you think this has any basis in sanity you should probably talk to someone.

I hate to tell you this but good self esteem is not choosing what you are wearing based on the message it's sending out, it's choosing it because you like it and anyone stupid enough to make sweeping generalisations about it is not on your radar....because you just don't care.

I have got to stop looking at MN on my lunch break, it's rotting my brain.

DorritLittle · 04/07/2022 13:08

I don't see the issue at all, and I usually hate statements. It's quite positive actually (agree with a pp, it is anti-superwoman) and I don't personally view anyone using it as lacking self esteem.

SecondRow · 04/07/2022 13:19

My DP (male) has one that says GOOD ENOUGH. It's not a bad philosophy in life, actually.

You are not really supposed to take this thread so seriously. Obviously Op knows the wearer doesn't care, just like I know no one cares about my opinion on women wearing dresses over leggings. ( please, no) But we can discuss stuff like this, because every thread does not have to be about Roe v Wade or Ukraine or the cost of living crisis.

Elephantia · 04/07/2022 12:21

That's how I took it. Must admit I wouldn't dare wear it - with my fat body shape I can see people saying, "MORE than enough!"

@Elephantia Great minds think alike!!

I wouldn't wear it anyway, but expecting some smart arse to say 'you're MORE than enough' would be a real worry!!

SingingInParadise · 04/07/2022 11:11

I like it.

If I was seeing someone with one like this, I assume that they were giving a big middle finger to the whole system constantly telling women they are never enough.
i would assume they are very secure in themselves.

So it’s interesting to see your assumption is exactly the opposite!!

im more surprised by how upset you are about it tbh.

I agree with you.

To me it reads: I'm happy just the way I am, thanks very much, and if you think I don't fit your idea of what I'm supposed to be like, well tough shit.

Spohn · 04/07/2022 13:58

Why are you ‘baffled’? I’m sure you can think why someone would like the phrase, if you really try. You seem more than baffled, to be ranting and making a thread about a woman’s top.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 04/07/2022 14:12

zafferana · 04/07/2022 10:50

No, just baffled. Why would anyone want to advertise their insecurity?

Saying it as a mantra is one thing, emblazoning it across your boobs and walking around London is another.

It’s not an insecurity though.

TabithaTittlemouse · 04/07/2022 14:18

I wouldn’t wear it but other people can wear what they want.

Moonmelodies · 04/07/2022 14:24

Maybe it's the name of a band.

TooManyPJs · 04/07/2022 14:42

I don't think that t-shirt indicates that she has low self esteem at all.

But if she does and that t-shirt makes her feel stronger and more confident why the hell would you want to take that away from her by posting threads like this on SM.

Says more about you then her.

ChagSameachDoreen · 04/07/2022 14:51

Well, actually some people are not enough and need to take a good look at themselves

This!!

Moonface123 · 04/07/2022 15:07

Good for her, if only we all that attitude, be alot more happier and contented women on the planet.

VioletInsolence · 04/07/2022 15:23

Isn’t that the slogan that Anne from Motherland used on her driftwood creations?

VioletInsolence · 04/07/2022 15:25

It’s been appearing in FB for years…it’s hardly profound.

Ticksallboxes · 04/07/2022 15:45

I think it's great - it means that she is good enough as she is, without pandering to societal norms.

Personally I wouldn't wear it as it's a bit shouty, but good for her.

SickSadWorId · 04/07/2022 15:52

I agree, it's cringe.

Save it for your Facebook bio along with the "if you can't handle me at my worst" bollocks

Chattycathydoll · 04/07/2022 16:08

I have a pink jumper that says ‘look for the positives’. Bet you’d love that one Grin

I bought it because I’m in recovery for MH issues inc depression. Emblazoning a reminder to stop spiralling into doomsday prophecies on my chest works for me. See also my ‘bee happy’ top with bees on, and my leggings with ‘get moving’ written down the sides which I generally wear when I know I need to get out and do some exercise but depression is telling me to sleep the whole time DD is at school. Dressing with intention helps and sets me up with reminders I can’t avoid seeing.

drpet49 · 04/07/2022 16:11

I agree OP, cringeworthy

DeusInAbsentia · 04/07/2022 16:14

I am enough was a campaign started by Jared Padalecki of the TV Show Supernatural. It's part of the AKF Foundation (Always Keep Fighting) which he founded after going through depression and friends suicides.

If it was one of those shirts profits from the sales went to the charities To Write Love On Her Arms, The Wounded Warrior Project and A.I.R. Attitudes In Reverse - Student Suicide Prevention - Mental Health

I own one myself. Good on her.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 04/07/2022 16:16

It's a woke statement up there with 'I see you'. meaningless waffle really but makes some people feel good.

Ikeabag · 04/07/2022 16:28

I wonder whether people are wearing words without necessarily thinking too much about them. This just reminded me that I saw a woman with a proper grump face on, wearing a t shirt that said "happy thoughts". I think the one in the OP falls into the venn diagram of mum boss instagram type designs that have spilled over into the mainstream. Just a passing fashion. I kind of get OP's point too, that it's something that works as a mantra, but a t shirt is something you can't see really, not in the way that other people can - it would make more sense to have it on a personal talisman or something, if it carried meaning. It's not something I'd consider wearing but mostly because I think buying a thing with a message on it doesn't have the effect that thinking about it, or writing it down and keeping it close, might have instead. It's commodification of something that has meaning beyond a t shirt slogan.

Ikeabag · 04/07/2022 16:30

Deus makes a good point, mind. If it's going to a charity that's making a difference, that's cool.
