Woman wearing t-shirt with slogan 'I AM ENOUGH' written on it

I couldn't believe that a) anyone would buy such a thing and b) that they would then wear it.

She might as well have had emblazoned across her chest 'I have low self-esteem', not exactly something that I would want to advertise.

I've also seen this as a tattoo - on a woman of course.

Just why????

Totally agree. It's like wearing " Warrior, Survivor, Kween" across your chest.

shinynewapple22 · 04/07/2022 11:52

I'm not sure why you think this means she has low self esteem? Surely it means I'm not perfect , this is how I am, take me or leave me, I DGAF.

Irishfarmer · 04/07/2022 11:53

@Aria20 that is pretty gross🤐

I don't see how it comes across as low self esteem. I have two t-shirts that have slogans on them something like you are doing great is on one of them. I liked the giraffe picture with it and it was big which I need as at nearly 37weeks pregnant nothing fits me. My other one says happy day or something like that.

notacooldad · 04/07/2022 11:56

No, just baffled. Why would anyone want to advertise their insecurity?
Who says it's an insecurity?
That's your interpretation of it.
Personally I just think it's a random slogan t shirt that the person wearing it liked. Maybe nothing deep and meaningful about it.

Why?

Why are you so judgy? You sound awful.

Christ I wouldn't have even noticed her T shirt never mind find it worthy of starting a MN thread about it. I can safely assume this one won't make it the The Daily Fail.

Same here!

FilePhoto · 04/07/2022 11:59

I've got a top that I'm 99% certain says "I am enough"
I'm not totally in love with the slogan but I needed new tops and it was one of the few that was long enough, came in my size and I could afford.

Thankfully I couldn't give a shiny shite if other people like it.

Itstrue22 · 04/07/2022 12:00

It seems like you think publicly acknowledging your insecurities is a sign of weakness, it’s not. Pretending you don’t have insecurities is far more of an issue than acknowledging them

ResentfulLemon · 04/07/2022 12:01

I think "I am enough" is a far more positive message to have on a top than "I don't care about your fucking opinion"

Her choice of top isn't signalling low self esteem, it's signalling that she really doesn't give a shiny shit what other people think of her...including her choice of clothing.

That you're bothered reveals a lot more about your insecurity than hers TBH.

Dancingwithhyenas · 04/07/2022 12:02

VintageVest · 04/07/2022 10:44

I guess its a push back against constant messages that you have to aspire to be more, have more, be flawless, faultless. I can understand the meaning even if I'm not one for slogan tshirts.

I agree. Don’t see any issue with it even though I probably wouldn’t wear one myself.

LobeliaBaggins · 04/07/2022 12:03

I will join you in the judgey corner, OP. Just us two awful, judgey women.:) I also judge people who call themselves "flaneurs", :thinkers" and "nomads" on social media.

Iwonder08 · 04/07/2022 12:10

I agree with you, OP. If you are enough it should be reflected in one's behaviour rather than put on one's chest. What is the point? Though I would definitely find it less cringy than 'be kind' one

goldfinchonthelawn · 04/07/2022 12:18

Why do you think it signals insecurity OP?

'I am enough' means something to the effect: I don't need to be beautiful, size 8, an Olympian, bestselling, Oxbridge film star with a six-figure salary, mansion and stunning man. It's fine to bumble along in life just being. We are constatnly fed messages that it isn't. That we must strive and achieve goals and aim high and be our best selves. But actually, we are absolutely able to just chug along if we are happy with that.

I hate slogan tee-shirts but I don't hate that one above any others.

ClinkeyMonkey · 04/07/2022 12:20

I don't read people's chests to be honest. But if I did and it said that, I would probably ponder it for a second or two, then forget about it. In fact I probably would never think about it again ... unless someone started a thread on Mumsnet about it. Does it really matter?

Elephantia · 04/07/2022 12:21

shinynewapple22 · 04/07/2022 11:52

That's how I took it. Must admit I wouldn't dare wear it - with my fat body shape I can see people saying, "MORE than enough!"

SomeLikeItWarm · 04/07/2022 12:23

She just fancied wearing it. It doesn't tell you anything about her, it's not for you. It's for her.
I'm might go and put on my RELAX TShirt for the rest of the day.

notacooldad · 04/07/2022 12:25

I bet the lady wearing the t shirt hasn't analysed the meaning half as much as MN do.
If I'd seen the t shirt and I liked the shape of the cut and the print went with the colour of a mid length skirt I'm trying to match I'd probably buy it without a second thought to be honest!!

puddingandsun · 04/07/2022 12:28

Is the main 'offending factor' here that a man wouldn't wear a T-shirt with such a slogan?

Why that makes it unsuitable for her?

feelingsareweird · 04/07/2022 12:34

Yep, because god forbid a woman express strong feelings in public or admit to not being 100% perfect at all times. Or even worse, act with confidence and self assurance!! Little woman, keep quiet and don’t make a spectacle of yourself 🙄🙄

I applaud anyone who can talk about their insecurities and make public that they are working on them and prioritising their self worth- if that is indeed what this person was doing, which we can hardly conclude from the fact they put on a t shirt. I’d say OPs judgement is exactly the societal pressure that these mantras have been invented to try to combat.

Buythebag40 · 04/07/2022 12:35

I agree - I can't stand slogan T-shirts.

She probably imagines it will make others think "ooh, get her - she's SO SPUNKY and such a strong independent woman". In reality I personally just think "oh, grow up!"

The worst one I saw was a bloke wearing a "who's the daddy?" tee - 🤮

LobeliaBaggins · 04/07/2022 12:41

I wonder if this is an age thing. Because I am old and jaded, I would do anything rather than call myself "beautiful" or "brave" or "strong/independent" in public, on a tshirt, or to describe myself on social media. But I note younger women have no trouble doing that. I think these are things other people should call you.

ClaudiusTheGod · 04/07/2022 12:49

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 04/07/2022 10:56

.... which, 9 times out of 10 are on the ladies tops not mens Confused

Agree, although I’m yet to see anything like that on men’s tops.

I agree, but I'm not sure that sharing them with the world at large is a great idea, in the same way that oversharing on social media is rarely a good idea.

It's interesting that so many of you see this slogan in a positive light (the personal attacks aside).

OP posts:
user143677433 · 04/07/2022 12:56

I think your reaction to it is odd.

It’s slightly more polite than a T-shirt saying “screw you and your opinion” but similar sentiment. Ironic in the context of this thread.

ofwarren · 04/07/2022 12:56

It's just a t-shirt with words on
No idea why it's such a big deal. I wouldn't have even noticed.
