Covid and loss of smell

WisteriaHysteria22 · 03/07/2022 13:05

Tested positive last Monday, was feeling better but literally in the past her my taste has all but gone, can still distinguish between, salt, sweet, spicy but absolutely no sense of smell.

How long can I except this to go on for. I'm guessing the NHS advice seems to be 'might come back might not you're on your own🤷‍♀️'
Thanks

depends on you entirely! mine went then came back within a few days. I think this is the case for most people.

BlueGreenRedOrange · 03/07/2022 13:11

Mine took maybe a month to come back. I found it really distressing as I've always had a good sense of smell.

blackheartsgirl · 03/07/2022 13:15

I’ve still not had mine back properly and that was 3 months ago. Things just don’t smell as strong, don’t smell at all or smell differently

Mine lasted a few days - I could only taste salt - but when my sense of smell returned I would get phantom smells of something burning! I kept dashing into the kitchen or bedroom as I thought there was a fire!

This went on for many weeks! (I had Covid before vaccinations were available)

sassafras123 · 03/07/2022 15:10

Two weeks for me today and still no sense of smell and only just getting taste back. And as for the fatigue ! 😴

Titsflyingsouth · 03/07/2022 21:42

Mine lasted about a week. Hope it's short lived, OP

rogdmum · 03/07/2022 21:58

Mine took a few weeks. Then a few months later out of the blue all I could smell was soap everywhere, particularly on me! That only be lasted around three weeks much to my relief.

bluejelly · 03/07/2022 22:01

I lost it for about 2 days. It was very brief (if weird)

Welliesandpyjamas · 03/07/2022 22:01

Mine still hasn't come back. I had covid for Christmas.

LaChatte · 03/07/2022 22:10

17 months, still waiting. Most people seem to get it back pretty quickly though.

user1485155939 · 03/07/2022 22:13

Had covid November 2021 and still no taste or smell 😫

fghj149 · 03/07/2022 22:14

I couldn’t stand it and thought that was it gone forever. Gradually came back over about 2 weeks -there were days where I thought it had got worse but it’s back to normal now thankfully.

edoc · 03/07/2022 22:16

Mine took 2 years and is not fully back, really recommend smell training

fghj149 · 03/07/2022 22:16

Just to add I’m really sorry to anybody who has lost it long term, I can’t imagine what you’re going through and hope it comes back for you soon ❤️

Idbemonica1 · 03/07/2022 22:17

Mine came back gradually over a few days.

User3456 · 03/07/2022 22:26

there's smell training you can do - have a google - here's one link that mentions it but there are lots more. Hope it comes back soon. This worries me, it's a safety issue if people are losing sense of smell long term :-(

Hotpinkangel19 · 03/07/2022 22:40

3-4 months here.

resuwen · 03/07/2022 22:42

Me and DH had covid at the same time in November, both with complete loss of smell. Mine returned to normal within a few weeks. DH has regained a slight sense for very strong smells, but that's it.

Crocsandshocks · 03/07/2022 22:45

Mine has taken over 2 years and is still not normal. Hoping it will come back quickly for you.

popandchoc · 03/07/2022 22:47

I only lost it for a couple of days so can depend i think.

AdamantEve · 03/07/2022 22:51

12 months so far for me. Think for most people it comes back quite quickly though, as in few days-few weeks, so don’t worry yet.

Foreverlexicon · 03/07/2022 22:53

I lost mine a couple of days ago.
Taste started to come back this afternoon.

HipHopBanzai · 03/07/2022 22:55

I lost mine on about day 5. It came back within 3 or 4 days.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 03/07/2022 22:56

My friend lost her sense of smell and after a few months tried a lymphatic massage. She could smell again after that. I lost mine as well for a few days along with my taste but recovered ok.

MorbidMuch · 03/07/2022 22:58

Gradually started coming back after about a month. It was scary when it happened as all sense of smell just totally disappeared overnight after I'd tested positive for a couple of days. I hope yours comes back soon.
