Carry on luggage and liquids

We’re off on a short European break and taking carry on luggage only. Realised it’s going to be a pain with liquids etc. I was planning to put my whole toilet bag in the case but that’s not going to work if I have to take it all out at security.

Better to put toiletries in hand luggage? What about things like toothpaste, moisturiser, do they count as liquids?

You are allowed one small see through plastic bag of liquids per person.

Each item needs to be 100mls or less.

you need t9 check the rules as they are strict - the liquids must be in a clear bag of a certain size and the containers can’t be more than 100ml in size. Yes toothpaste, hand cream, lipstick, Vaseline all count as liquids.

Clear resealable bag max size 20x20cm. All liquids, pastes, gels need to go in it in containers less than 100ml each. Toothpastes, moisturiser, foundation,etc all go in it.

Or buy stuff after security and then it doesn't matter about sizes.

For reference a small resealable freezer bag is roughly the size you need to fit all your liquids into. And you only get 1 each

You get the benefit of not needing to wait for your luggage I suppose

Also your makeup counts. This was my bag flying yesterday- the woman at security gave it a glare but the individual items are all small (and half empty!). I would take less makeup on a normal break but I needed to be able to do a full face.

As pps have said. I’ve travelled internationally with just carry on quite a few times, takes a bit more thought, but it’s not too bad. 20x20cm clear bag, ziplock will do, each container less than 100ml (buy at supermarket and decant), remember toothpaste, lipstick etc are “liquids”, and make sure to have it easily to hand as you go through security as you’ll have to put it through separately. Worth a bit of hassle to just take carry on I’d say, the way luggage handling is at the moment.

Do you put it all in a zip lock bag before you her there for ease?

Definitely! You don't want to be sorting that out in the security queue.

Yes definitely do it in advance and put the plastic bag on the top. Everyone will hate you if you try to sort it at security.

For makeup, foundation, moisturiser cleanser, spf etc count as liquid and have to be in the clear plastic bag. Toothpaste, deodorant, perfume, shampoo also have to be in the plastic bag. Powder doesn't so leave that in a separate bag in your case so it doesn't use up space. I find lipstick is ok not in the clear bag so long as you only take 1 and don't take the piss.

Out of curiosity, how have you missed these rules?! They've been in place more than 15 years!

They are still strict. Buy some travel pots - the squishy bags from Amazon fit the most in. Toothpaste buy a travel size. Liquid make up also counts.

However, remember you can buy stuff at the airport once you are though security or at your destination, so you can just do that for genetic stuff like tooth paste and sun lotion.

I often take lipstick through security in my handbag and it's never been an issue.

also toothbrush, make up brush, spare mascara wand need not to be in the bag, so put them in a separate makeup bag with earrings and hair bobbles.

@StamppotAndGravy as I said, we normally take hold luggage and just chuck all my toiletries in there! This is the first time just taking carry on.

And stick deodorant doesn't need to go in the plastic bag

Yes, put it all in the clear bag when you do your packing. When you put your stuff through the scanners the clear bag must be out of the case and in the tray. I recently used a tesco small resealable freezer bag (the press and seal not ziplock) for travel to lanzarote

I love the challenge of carryon. Esp Ryanair where it is the size of a shoebox

The only thing with buying stuff past security is you have to use it all up or chuck it before you fly home.

You wouldn’t always be allowed to take a bag that size through. Gatwick allow it but London City don’t - if you brought that they’d make you decant into one of their flat 20cm x 20cm bags at security. Whether things are half empty or not is irrelevant

I've flown a couple of times in the last month - Bristol>Edinburgh and back and Heathrow>Nice and back. At one of those airports was a sign that said 'anything that you can pour, smear, spread or spray counts as a liquid.' It stuck in my mind.

I took that actual bag (bought it following airline measurements) through Brum yesterday and Manchester a few weeks ago. Taking it through Stansted next week. It's not as big as it maybe looks - measures 20cm x 15cm 😀
