Was this a scam or incompetence?

I've put a brand new pair of converse on Market place for collection only. Bought about 2 years ago, and forgot about.
Not much interest, but one message from someone who initially asked to check on Fri. I said after 5 as I was working. They replied saying they would collect at 12. FB profile said London, which put me on alert. We live about 5hrs drive from London.
Anyway, they came today, as rearranged, with £5. I said they were on for £10. They didn't have any more cash, and I declined a bank transfer. They said they would go to a cash machine, but haven't returned in 3 hours.
Was it a scam of sorts if I'd accepted the bank transfer? I'll probably take them to the charity shop next week....

Just a common or garden CF. Hoping you'd accept £5.

They haven't driven 10 hours for a pair of shoes either.

I agree it sounds fishy. Probably hoped you'd take £5 and now you won't they've left it. Whole thing sounds weird though

No, I figured they hadn't driven half way up the country.
Thing is, I'd be better off accepting their lower offer. But I also feel I'd rather give them to charity than mess with CFs! Cutting off my nose to spite my face??

No! Don't let CFs win! The charity shop option means you lose £5 but someone else can buy them and £10 or whatever the charity shop sells them for go to just causes.

They are at the charity shop, along with 2 bags of other stuff.
So, CF has done me a favor, and emptied a tiny bit of the house out. They have also, hopefully, raise a bit of cash for Barnardos!

Really common try-on.

Got rid of loads of stuff over the past couple of years (moved house) using eBay, FB MP & charity shops.
FB MP was awful. For every genuine person there were two who would try it on (it is free isn't it?...... I've driven over here so can you knock off the cost of the fuel?...... not really certain if it is what I want so how about you drop the price and I will risk it?....... and so on).

The last thing (and what probably gets up my nose the most) is when I am giving it away and they still can't be bothered to turn up!
Since we moved into the new house we had "discovered" several items that having been carefully packed & moved but are no-longer required. Thought I would list them on the local FB group rather than MP and despite people living around the corner (or even on the same road) they still don't turn up.
Gave up the other day, blocked the time wasters and took it all down the charity shop (which is what I will do with everything from now on).
