What’s the worst racist incident you have experienced?

Hope54321 · 02/07/2022 14:01

I’ve had quite a few:

Students in secondary school have pulled my hijab off.

After the 9/11 a group of boys threw paper balls at me and shouted “Taliban” at me.

The day after a terror attack in London, a man pulled his window down and called me a dumb whore. There was no one else around.

Walking back from school, a man told me, “Go back to your own country”.

On my way to college, I got on the bus and a woman said, “I don’t know why you would want to draw attention to yourself by wearing that”.

OP posts:

Will the 'me too' brigade shut up and stop embarrassing us white people reading the thread. It's not about you at all.

How do you know who's white

Why are posters pretending they do not know which posts @Daydreamsinsantafe is referring to?!? I agree with you @Daydreamsinsantafe

Only on page 3 but I know what you mean. I had such high hopes when I opened this thread to them be disappointed so quickly, especially at the not so subtle racism in some of these posts.

Summerwhereareyou · 03/07/2022 09:33

Very much males against females.
As an aside I never witnessed any racism (thankfully) towards my friend from Sri Lanka nor my friend from Pakistan heritage.

My poor friend with ginger hair, open season.

Yes but ginger isn't a race is it? So not really relevant to the question.

TheBigotyBoggart · 03/07/2022 09:43

Who appointed you MN moderator? You don't get to decide who is and who isn't allowed to share their experiences on a public forum.

TheBigotyBoggart · 03/07/2022 09:44

That was to spanishsummers in case it wasn't obvious.

Summerwhereareyou · 03/07/2022 09:49

It's some one being singled out for the colour of their skin/hair?

“The ‘reverse racism’ card is often pulled by white people when people of color call out racism and discrimination, or create spaces for themselves … that white people aren’t a part of. The impulse behind the reverse racism argument seems to be a desire to prove that people of color don’t have it that bad, they’re not the only ones that are put at a disadvantage or targeted because of their race. It’s like the Racism Olympics. And it’s patently untrue” (Blay, 2015).

For those struggling....

Yep exactly this. Perfect quote for the uneducated or the ones who are people purposely obtuse as another excellent poster put it

Spritelite · 03/07/2022 09:51

I lived in a rough town for a year as a kid because we didn’t realise it’s reputation before moving there. At school every single pupil was white, and one day an asian girl in a hijab came for a look round at lunch time and almost the entire school started throwing paper balls and stones and rubbish at her and shouting horrible racist things. She didn’t know what to do so was just smiling politely the poor girl, she looked lovely. The headteacher was shouting for everybody to stop but he honestly looked amused😡

My home town was mostly nice, but it had a large muslim community so there was lots of racism from both sides. The thing that stood out to me the most was that the muslim perpetrators were always men, but it was always the muslim women who ended up being racially abused. Disgusting.

Lalosalamanca · 03/07/2022 09:54

I've done it to myself by reading I know, but I am sat here with tears in my eyes. This thread is depressing on so many levels. I can't even begin to articulate....

TheBigotyBoggart · 03/07/2022 09:59

Claiming reverse racism is just a way to shut other people down so they can't speak of their own experiences. It's not helpful and it's just creates more division.

pedropony76 · 03/07/2022 09:59

Heistonabike · 02/07/2022 22:48

@DomPerignon12 At its most simplistic definition, racism is discrimination against another race or believing that one race is superior over others. However, anyone with even an ounce of critical thinking skills and knowledge of world history should be able to come to the conclusion that racism requires a power imbalance.

Also, who do you think wrote the definitions in the bloody Oxford dictionary? White people do not get to dictate to ethnic minorities what racism is or is not. On every thread of this nature several posters pop up with the same bullshit argument of what the dictionary definition of racism is 🙄

Again, excellent comment!

oohfancythat · 03/07/2022 10:03

I wish this thread hadn't been derailed into a linguistical tongue-tying cesspit, as per usual, as people are no longer sharing their experiences.

pedropony76 · 03/07/2022 10:06

afterthestormagain · 03/07/2022 03:17

White people cannot experience racism. White people experience white privilege, end. of. Anyone who keeps trying to justify it is only minimising the experiences of minority groups who don't experience white privilege at all and have to deal with racism on the daily in every aspect of their lives - institutionally and personally. White people do not deal with institutional racism which tends to fuel general racism. Society favours white people, you cannot change the facts.

Another excellent comment. A lot of people would like to be oppressed and are so quick to shout racism (like a few posters on this thread).

Some things mentioned on here are upsetting, rude and at best racial prejudice. That is not racism.

pedropony76 · 03/07/2022 10:10

ohfook · 03/07/2022 08:12

Some of the posters on here remind me of Gary Lineker's recent disclosure about the racism he faced because he tans easily!

Haha you heard about that too did you😂
What an absolute slap in the face. He should have kept his mouth shut!

That sounds like a horribly coordinated preplanned attack. Balls of paper, stones and rubbish, thrown by almost the entire school? I'm surprised it didn't make the news 😤

TheBigotyBoggart · 03/07/2022 10:15

I'm surprised that didn't make the news as well. Incredible. Isn't it.

Lndnmummy · 03/07/2022 10:16

This thread is heart breaking. Over and over again. Thank you @Heistonabike and @afterthestormagain for being able to articulate with a voice of reason.
I try to, but sometimes I find myself unable to as its all just so triggering.

Oh my goodness. I understand the broader dynamics that you're talking about have their place in less anecdotal and more theoretical and systemic discussions, OF COURSE they do, but this WAS a thread simply about people relating their personal experiences, not a DING DONG match of 'well, that's not good enough to be on this thread'.

Are you really turning round to every Jewish/Irish/white British/etc. person on here and saying directly to those posters, 'Oh hey, your horrible experience of X/Y/Z, well, silly you for posting on here because how ''white privileged'' you are for experiencing your rape/physical violence/intimidation/discriminatory language!' How crass and upsetting.

pedropony76 · 03/07/2022 10:19

Some of mine are,

  • being called blick in school because I was quite dark
  • classmates saying ’where’s pedropony’ whenever the lights were turned off in the room
  • being called an ‘angry black woman’ MANY times when I’m more than calm
  • being dismissed and told by a midwife that I don’t ‘look as if I’m in pain’ despite having three surgeries after having my daughter and the inability to move my neck and head
  • entering a pub in Trafalgur square with my cousin and being started at so much that we had to leave. We actually got told the pub ‘wasn’t for people like us’ and that was only about 6 years.
I can go on and on and on. Growing up as a black woman in South London zone 1 which has now become massively gentrified. It’s hard to NOT experience racism on a weekly basis. It is what it is though. Nothing will ever change. I just have to raise both of my kids to love their skin and don’t let society make them feel that they’re lesser than anyone just because of their skin
FrippEnos · 03/07/2022 10:25

These threads as they always end up the same way.

Posters forget that there are two different definitions of racism (at least two)
One that is based on sociology
Prejudice + power = racism
and individual racism where anybody can be racist against anyone different to them.

I have noticed that a lot of racist people like to use the first to excuse their use of the second.

pedropony76 · 03/07/2022 10:27

@oohfancythat aren’t you tired of going back and forth with people over the same thing?

There’s been many examples are that are simply not racism. Upsetting, rude, discriminatory and even racial prejudice, yes. However people should be wise enough to learn the difference. It’s really that simple

onetwothreefourfivesixseveneight · 03/07/2022 10:30

@oohfancythat
@FrippEnos
There are lots of sane intelligent people lurking at home agreeing with you but won't enter the discussion in fear of being labelled racist.

DomPom47 · 03/07/2022 10:33

Can I asked what happened within the school setting to the students? All your examples are horrific and I truly hope within the school setting you were 1. Supported by the senior team and 2. Students were appropriately dealt with

I'm definitely confused by some of the points on this thread. Some anti-semitism is rooted in racism but are people saying it isn't?
