Name changed for this for no particular reason.

I work part time in a shop 3 days a week. We open. From 7am -10pm 7days a week so I do 3days (no particular days ) but I always for some reason end up doing evenings which is grand, I'm grateful for the job as it suits me, it's close by and rate of pay is good. However I have asked my manager if I could work mornings/afternoons as I have kids and it would work better for me with childcare (all kids are in primary school till 3pm) he still keeps putting me in until 10pm now the issue that I have is we are a team of about 40 with 80% of the staff are students. So for example I am working evenings and scrambling to get the kids minded when hubby is working late and all the students are working the 10-2 , 12-5 shifts when they have no responsibilities and always phone in sick at the drop of a hat when they "can't be arsed" coming in. They have made it known they will be leaving when they get 'proper' jobs. I am hardworking and have never phoned in sick and tend to be there for the long run. Am I being self centred and selfish for only thinking of myself ?

You at probably getting the evening shift as they know you are reliable.
it’s not selfish to ask to change or for a mixture of shifts.

I would look around for another job with fixed hours that suit you better. I work in a supermarket 3 days per week and my hours are fixed, the manager sometimes asks me to change times which I do usually but I am not obliged to if I choose not to.

It is a shame as I do love the job/ people and customers. It's just frustrating that I'm working to 10pm on sat nights (from 2pm) while my children are off school. I'll maybe approach it again and see what happens
