I got it wrong the first time.

Definitely drive it out, it's not even so much the heroic answer. If you pull up in the tunnel (especially if you have kids with you) you're stuck in a tunnel having to get out at the speed you can run, with possibly flames being funnelled towards you if the discussed explosion happens. Drive it out and you can get out at decent speed, have extra thinking time, can start giving instructions to other adults/older kids in the car before you even have to stop and have a better chance of getting away when you stop.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/07/2022 08:18

Given that it’s hardly an everyday occurrence, how is anyone who’s never had it happen before, supposed to know whether it’s safe to drive it any further? I’d be wondering whether the whole thing was about to burst into flames.

How many of the people saying stop and phone for help drive? or carry a fire extinguisher?

this is why they have questions like this as a part of learning to drive otherwise you are a danger to yourself and others

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 01/07/2022 08:31

Drive it out.

Onceuponatimethen · 01/07/2022 08:38

Drive out of the tunnel must be right

The Mont Blanc tunnel driver got a suspended sentence for parking the truck up on fire.

I've been driving a car that I believed had caught on fire. It was frightening and I was shaking but managed to bring it to a safe stop at the side of the road despite not being able to see where I was going due to the amount of thick "smoke" coming from under the bonnet. It wasn't in a tunnel, thankfully, but it was on a London red route!

(The car wasn't actually on fire - it was billowing huge amounts of thick steam that looked like smoke. A fire engine turned up as multiple people had called it in thinking the car was on fire. When I eventually got it to a garage they said that both cooling mechanisms had failed simultaneously - something they had never seen happen before, accounting for the massive amounts of steam. I kept a relatively cool head but I think I would have struggled to drive it more than a short distance out of a tunnel, not least due to the very limited visibility.)

Drive it out of the tunnel if it's safe to do so

This

Acaseofthemondays · 01/07/2022 08:57

"It is driving it out of the tunnel. Which makes sense when you think about it as your not blocking traffic trying to escape . But my gut instinct would be to get myself and my children out of the car incase it explodes like a movie scene."

Thing is if you get yourself and your children out of a burning car inside a tunnel, I reckon you're going to get hit by several cars. Probably more.

Even if you're on fire you probably won't explode for a bit because the fuel tank's not near the engine. Just enjoy the experience of driving a fireball. If you're in an electric car then the batteries are located everywhere so you may well explode.

CliffsofMohair · 01/07/2022 09:18

Exploding batteries. Cheery thought. Don’t remember Tesla highlighting that in the sales brochure.

HikingforScenery · 01/07/2022 09:27

Drive it out, if it’s safe? That’s my first guess.

CormoranStrike · 01/07/2022 09:34

Drive it out the tunnel - leave it in the tunnel and and everyone behind you could suffer smoke inhalation

gingersplodgecat · 01/07/2022 09:46

Get out and walk??

I think I'd be leaving faster than walking pace.

Hawkins001 · 01/07/2022 09:53

At a guess, without reading others, pull up and walk to an emergency phone, as the tunnels I've seen, usually have those doors every often for safety ect.

AngeloMysterioso · 01/07/2022 10:53

The theory test is full of bullshit questions… I took mine in April.

Autienotnaughtie · 01/07/2022 11:10

I haven't seen the answer if it's in comment s I would pull up and ring 999

Autienotnaughtie · 01/07/2022 11:11

Just seen the answer fuck that😂😂😂

megletthesecond · 01/07/2022 11:12

Drive it out I think.

Treppi · 01/07/2022 11:15

Drive it out if possible so youre not trapping others or yourself in a hard to reach place.

slowcookerforone · 01/07/2022 11:26
