Accommodations
Harms
Freedoms

Anyone else notice this? Accommodations (the booking.com advert) is particularly odd.

It's because the fashion industry don't use them anymore so there is an abundance of lonely s's in need of a home.

See also the beauty industry:

A bold lip
a smoky eye

Last I checked I had 2 lips and a pair of eyes on my face.

Brilliant Grin There's nothing more affected than a nude lip paired with a kitten heel.

I don't think that's it, accommodation for example isn't singular. It can mean places.

A lot of them on booking.com will just be bad translations or internationalised webspeak, but US English does use accommodations in the plural.

Freedoms OTOH is also a countable noun, eg rights and freedoms.

Aaagh, hate that singularisation of clothes!

Eg wearing a lovely green trouser

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/06/2022 09:00

Yes, it's a lot of bollock.

It's Idris Elba saying it on the booking.com advert. It's not been common to talk about freedoms and harms before, that's what puzzling. Why the change in our everyday language.

Another one is the sudden appearance is two times, as in two times as effective, rather than twice as.

But language is fluid and changes all of the time and it's not necessarily a bad thing!

We have a very old fashioned menswear shop where the owner, fast approaching 60 is still known as "Young MrMenswear shop" and he always talks about "a trouser" or even "a trunk" when selling swimwear.
