Does calgon or similar really work

Have a new washing machine coming in 2 weeks. My old one was so bad with limescale. Very hard water area.
Would calgon really make a difference. Fwiw i do approx 2 loads a day. So gets a lot of use.

I found the calgon powder left white streaks down the clothes which was evident when they'd dried.

Our washing machine guy told me it works, but you'd spend more on Calgon over the average life of a machine than it would cost to just buy another washing machine.

Using calgon just made me itch. I stuck with occasional white vinegar in the fab con drawer when I lived in a hard water area. It was never limescale that killed my machines.

I live in a very hard water area and it definitely makes a difference. I use Sainsbury's own brand version of Calgon as it's much cheaper (they were selling packs of 15 on special offer for 70p a few days ago!)

They do work. I live in a very hard water area and our first washing machine died very quickly due to limescale. The plumber told us to use supermarket own brand tablets, and we haven't had a problem since.

Ok thank you. I shall get some to try. I often did the vinegar and the cleaning cycles etc. 2 of my machines have died this way. One after 3 years one 4.

I use soda crystals. A bag is cheaper than Calgon.

I use soda crystals too, with just powder detergent, after reading on here (Piglet John) how pods and conditioner gunge up your washing machine. A very hot empty wash with just soda crystals was an eye opener - I did it twice before all the grey gunge-foam disappeared.

Mine brand new died in less than a year, was limescale, hadn't used tablets. Was still under warranty so free to repair but am now using own-brand tablets as not using is not worth risk imo.
