Are people thick as shit or just don't give a shit. ANOTHER child has been badly burned near me, by standing on a red hot disposable bbq buried under the sand on the beach. Its about time these were band. Selfish bastards!😡

Well it's the irresponsible users really.

Misstes · 28/06/2022 10:28

I’m not sure if your near me but It’s in the local paper today at east beach too. But this one was a nasty accident the parents of the boy were the users and it was the sand from under where the bbq was used that he ran across. It wasn’t buried. The poor boys feet where horrific. More warnings are definitely needed and more common sense too.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 28/06/2022 10:30

They are banned from the beach near me but it doesn't stop people using them, the lifeguards just turn a blind eye, those things are dangerous.

Pootles34 · 28/06/2022 10:43

I wonder if beaches could provide facilities to use them on? A country park/forest place near me does this, there's a big bank of about 5 concrete/brick stands, with bins next to them. It keeps everything off the ground, which is much safer.

I get that a red hot disposable bbq is unhandleable so quench it you numbnuts, it isn't like there's no water around. Not just bury it fgs. The people who did that will know, I wish the ticking clock Poe thing upon them.

It’s not the bbqs fault it’s the people using them.
we’ve used them on the beach before, but we come prepared. We take it to the sea and put water in it so it’s cool enough to put into a bag.
those things don’t remain hot for long.
we’re always extra careful and never leave it unsupervised.
some people should just be banned from the beach all together. The same people burying them are the same people playing loud music and leaving rubbish no doubt.

They didn't even need to do that - the beach where this happened provides safe disposal facilities for BBQs. They just couldn't be arsed to use them.

There aren't enough bad words for the lazy twats.

But @Sunshine10012 when you take it to the sea isn’t the sand/stones where you were using it still very hot?

It would be too hot to take it TO the sea but you can bring water FROM the sea.

Barbecues on the beach should be banned. There are too many people who are completely irresponsible.

Timeforabiscuit · 28/06/2022 11:15

It's not just the heat, the grill insert sides are razor sharp, they absolutely should not be buried on a beach, left by a bin once cooled would be better - but I think they should be banned like the paper lanterns.

Selinna · 28/06/2022 11:27

The article says the bbq and the top layer of sand cooled quickly but the sand underneath that top layer had trapped all the heat. Apparently it can stay very hot for several hours! Tbh I didn't know that either! Poor boy Sad

User0610134049 · 28/06/2022 11:29

It happened to a friends child with a stony beach

i think in that case too it was not being aware of how long the stones would retain the heat after they’d dealt with the bbq

BarbaraofSeville · 28/06/2022 11:31

Between this and the moorland fires they cause, these things need to be banned because too many of the users are too hard of thinking to use them safely.

Seeing as there's endless cooking techniques that involve burying food and a heat source in the ground, it's quite obvious it will stay dangerously hot for a long time.

Disposable barbecues are a bloody menace. Picnic area in a local beauty spot completely ruined because tossers have put barbecues directly on wooden and plastic picnic tables and on grass, ashes left everywhere, barbecues left to burn down unattended. All despite notices prohibiting barbecues in the area.

Rather than police/authorities dealing with the issue, the picnic area has been closed down.

Blinkingbatshit · 28/06/2022 11:38

I think they should be banned completely from public spaces. Sadly too many numbskulls ruining it for everyone else.

SirenSays · 28/06/2022 12:14

There are signs all around Australia telling people not to bury them as children and animals get hurt.

timtam23 · 28/06/2022 12:39

Couple of summers ago we stopped at a country park while travelling and I watched some people light a disposable BBQ and put it on the grass, they cooked a few sausages and then left - without the BBQ. I went across to tut to myself over the burned square of grass but then saw smoke coming from the undergrowth ...they had for some reason thought it was a good idea to hide the BBQ under dry brambles and grasses and it was all smouldering. I managed to hook the BBQ out but the area was bone dry, we had no water bottles left to put on it and no water source anywhere nearby so DP took an executive decision to wee on it 🙄it did put it out though! Couldn't believe how stupid some people could be, if I wasn't being my usual nosey self they could have started a fire as no one else was around or paying much attention
