DS is going for the open day this weekend and think he is going via the train. How easy is it to get from York train station to the university???

OP posts:
carefullycourageous · 27/06/2022 14:29

Dr Google told me there is a bus direct from the station.

toastofthetown · 27/06/2022 14:29

Very easy on the bus. He should be very easily find out which bus with Google maps.

whiteroseredrose · 27/06/2022 14:30

DS went a few years ago. I think they put on buses for open days.

If he is old enough to leave home for university, why can't he find out this information for himself? I'm sure the uni will have made it available.

Hoppinggreen · 27/06/2022 14:32

Its not walking distance.
We are going with DD on Sunday too. It was her choice to go but its where me and DH met so we are trying to not get too excited!!!
And before anyone comments she asked us to take her, if she had wanted to go on her own or with friends I would have encouraged it.

Mushroo · 27/06/2022 14:36

A quick Google tells you there’s many buses or a 40 min walk

BarbarasStripedHands · 27/06/2022 14:37

There are definitely open day buses put on and lots of sudent helpers at the station to show you where to get them.

Yankydoodledandy · 27/06/2022 14:40

Scrap the train first one from here is 10am - too late.
Going to have to go the night before but hotels too expensive so I;ll have to drive him there

OP posts:
Yankydoodledandy · 27/06/2022 14:41

@Hoppinggreen are you driving on the day. It's a good hour and 40mins for us but going to have to drive as train wont get him there in time and hotel night before are mega expensive!

There's usually a park and ride set up by York Uni. Parking at an airfield with buses out to the campus.

We are driving, its about the same distance for us.
I am not sure about parking on campus yet as I am waiting for DD to give me the info she has been sent. If we cant we will probably use the park and ride at McArthur Glen or something

yikesanotherbooboo · 27/06/2022 14:55

We walked many years ago when a DC was having a look. It gives some perspective on a lovely town. I know York fairly well though.

Yankydoodledandy · 27/06/2022 14:59

@Hoppinggreen me too waiting for info!!!

It says online that the open day is 9.15am until 4pm - not sure if you have to be there from the start for the whole day etc. But we will have to leave by 6.30/6.45am to get there parked up for a 9ish start!

I am dropping the dog off at 9 so I cant see us getting there before 10.30/11
I doubt it is very scheduled, there will probably be department tours at certain times but other than that we will just have a wander and enjoy the ducks and say things like "remember when you got really pissed there and fell in the water 30 odd years ago??".

Hoppinggreen · 27/06/2022 15:17

Updated info
The day is just drop in so no fixed times. There are talks scheduled but all drop in, if they are busy priority is given to students rather than parents
There is a Park and ride available but no on site parking and there isnt really anywhere close to park either. The postcode is YO23 3NA
There are free shuttle buses from York station between 8.45 and 4.30. Students in turquoise tshirts will be around to help

I'd get him/you to tweet/fb the uni marketing team/open day team. I work at a different uni and while open days may kick off at 9am most talks don't start until 10am. Lecturers are about to talk to all day, facility tours are repeated through the day. Some people don't rock up till lunchtime. I can't imagine he's miss anything vital between 9 and 10 , they know most people are travelling.

SheWhoWontBeNamed · 27/06/2022 15:25

Easy. There's a frequent, dedicated uni bus service which picks up directly outside the railway station
www.firstbus.co.uk/york/routes-and-maps/your-bus-66-and-university-services/all-new-buses-university-york (about 20 mins ride)
You don't need to be there at 9.00 am unless the department you're looking at is giving lectures that early (unlikely). Check the course website for the day's timetable.
The campus is walkable from the station, but it is a bit of a haul, about 3.5km.
Ordinarily, parking on campus is always a 'mare, so using the McArthur Glen park and ride might suit you. There's tons of extra parking laid on for open days so it shouldn't be necessary to park off site.
Get your DC to get their fingers out and look at the website! It's all there.

User79865765 · 27/06/2022 15:29

There’s no open fat parking on campus, it’s all at the park and ride.
You wouldn’t want to try to walk from the station to the campus.

User79865765 · 27/06/2022 15:29

Open day

Yankydoodledandy · 27/06/2022 15:35

ok pressure off a bit then to get there for 9ish. It's history he's interested in so hopefully he has a timetable and can see where he needs to be etc.

Thanks everyone - all very helpful for this first timer with a very laid back DS!!!!

If you see a small round dark haired woman in glasses with a tall man, a dinky blonde DD (probably wearing a pleated mini skirt) and a hulking great 6ft 13 year old boy in an anime tshirt come and say hello😁

User79865765 · 27/06/2022 17:12

We are going for history. I don’t think the slots are early. I’ll check

User79865765 · 27/06/2022 17:16

9.30, 11.20, 12 something and about half two for the subject talk. Mini lectures at about half ten and then repeating every couple of hours.

KittyMcKitty · 27/06/2022 17:24

We’re going on Sunday - it’s dd’s first choice. We live in the SE so are going up the night before (limited hotels available and prices all hiked due to open day). Dd has been sent a schedule. It’s her first choice on paper but need to see if the town feels too small. Irritatingly the talk for her subject isn’t until 3ish so we won’t be home until v late.

York is a City so I doubt it will feel too small. The Uni is a campus out of the city
Other than the uni it’s not very diverse though
