YORK UNI - How far is it from the train station?

DS is going for the open day this weekend and think he is going via the train. How easy is it to get from York train station to the university???

It's right on the other side of the city. There are buses though.

Surely you know how to use the 'directions' function in Google maps?

User79865765 · 27/06/2022 17:34

I agree, York isn't small (well its small for a city but it isn't small as a place). You won't really see the city though unless you deliberately go into the centre since the university is on the outskirts.

I'd also check the main open day brochure since it looks like every subject has at least one morning and one afternoon subject talk.

Octomore · 27/06/2022 17:38

Tbh, given that your DS will be going to uni next year and needs to be independent, I'd have let him do all the transport planning! He needs to learn how, not just assume mum will do it.

Its not walking distance.
We are going with DD on Sunday too. It was her choice to go but its where me and DH met so we are trying to not get too excited!!!
And before anyone comments she asked us to take her, if she had wanted to go on her own or with friends I would have encouraged it.

It is for me - and I’m 68! There are, however, regular buses to the campus.

York is a City so I doubt it will feel too small. The Uni is a campus out of the city
Other than the uni it’s not very diverse though

It’s small compared to Manchester London, Leeds and Birmingham! My worry is it’s too like home but it’s her decision hence we’re going to visit.

Sadly the subject dd’s interested in (it’s quite specific) is only in the afternoon.

Re size of York - we’re going the night before specifically to look at this. I grew up in Winchester which is a city but I would classify it as small.

York is a fab city but it’s a question of whether it will give her what she is looking for in a Uni experience. (Brother going to Manchester as comparison).

Anything is technically walking distance, even at 68 and I have walked to and from the campus from the station but it’s not really close

I know York and Manchester pretty well (And love both) and they are quite different.
If you are looking for something like Manchester it’s probably not going to be your cuppa. It is lovely though

RidingMyBike · 27/06/2022 18:03

Stay at the youth hostel if the city centre hotels are too expensive. Has parking, lovely surroundings, nice food and you can get a family room reasonably cheaply. It's the other side of the city from the university but not a problem if you're driving there anyway.

Piggywaspushed · 27/06/2022 18:05

York is a good deal bigger than Winchester.

I went to Leeds for the first time ever this weekend. I walked from the uni to Headinglet and that really didn't seem big city vibe to me... the main difference was that the student housing looked more grimy and ramshackle than you mostly see in York. Students in Leeds and Birmingham all very much live in the same area in second year whereas in York, students are spread around. I think that's nicer, personally bur others may prefer a student community.

No one has mentioned the traffic OP! The traffic going into York is often at a standstill. Plan for this.

User79865765 · 27/06/2022 18:20

York is bigger than Winchester but same sort of feel. Nothing like Manchester though. Its a small collegiate campus university outside of a historic touristy city. Even when I was there almost 30 years ago we joked that there were no real people in York, only students and tourists.

cakeorwine · 27/06/2022 18:26

It's dead easy on the buses. It's just on the edge of town - quite concretey. York's a small city. Lots to do for students.

cakeorwine · 27/06/2022 18:32

Yankydoodledandy · 27/06/2022 15:35

ok pressure off a bit then to get there for 9ish. It's history he's interested in so hopefully he has a timetable and can see where he needs to be etc.

Thanks everyone - all very helpful for this first timer with a very laid back DS!!!!

What day are you going there?
Traffic can be busy on a Saturday - but I guess you're going early so shouldn't be too bad.
Very easy to get to from the A64 - make sure you get the right exit and don't go around the ring road as it is on the wrong side of York. And has loads of roundabouts.

ShaunaTheSheep · 27/06/2022 18:39

It's a 2 mile 40 minute walk.
Having done it with DD, it was helpful to get a true perspective of how far out the campus is.
She loved it fingers crossed for results day

Piggywaspushed · 27/06/2022 18:49

Well,I worked in a restaurant when I was in York! With the Real people who definitely existed!

Lots of tourists has the upside of plentiful student jobs.

cakeorwine · 27/06/2022 18:50

York is a very cyclable city.

Iseethesilverlining · 27/06/2022 18:55

If he’s booked he should have had the info email which says

If you are travelling by train, take the free bus service from the railway station to campus. It will run from 8.45am to 4.30pm.

If you are travelling by car, please use the free park and ride service at the Rufforth Airfield West, running from 8.45am to 4.30pm. The postcode for satnav purposes is YO23 3NA. The what3words is ///spicy.scoping.twig

There will be no parking available on campus.

Hoppinggreen · 28/06/2022 08:07

We are going to park in the city, hopefully by the river and get a bus to the campus as we want to go for tea in York before we set off home. We know York reasonably well so know a few car parks in the city we can use if the riverside one is full.
if we just Wanted to go to The Uni then home we would use the park and ride as mentioned above
It looks like all departments have up to 4 sessions a day so there’s no urgency to get there early

Oakdog · 28/06/2022 14:48

If you're going into town later, maybe you could park at Grimston Bar park and ride, walk to the uni, back to the park and ride and then in and out on the bus from there. Not sure what time the last bus out of town is, but parking for a long time in the centre is v v expensive!

The Park and Ride to the Uni is going from Rufforth?

That's an interesting choice. Seeing as it's a village on the west of York.

Octomore · 28/06/2022 21:01

It's a sensible choice. There's an airfield there.

Octomore · 28/06/2022 21:02

The address ("Rufforth Airfield West") kind of gives it away!

Part of me hopes they haven’t

There's signs up on the ring road giving directions for parking for the Open Day. Just saw them tonight
