Bit of woo going on at holiday home

Nc'd for this as it's outing.

We arrived at our holiday home in France late on Thursday night to find that it's a (stunning) very old cottage, I would guess 300-400 years at least.

First thing that happened was that my husband plugged his phone in before going to bed and left it on the bedside table. Woke up the next morning to find the phone still there but the charger unplugged and on the floor in the middle of the bedroom a few feet away. Also, during the night, I could hear kids talking, but when I got up to check they were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking coming from somewhere in the house as I stood there.

Similar thing the next night, I could hear my daughter's distinct voice, except when my husband went to check the kids were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking. The house is very rural and isolated so not from outside, and everything else was switched off.

The morning after this, we were up at 6am to travel somewhere and as I stood in the kitchen brushing my daughter's hair, the electric oven knob turned itself to the autocook setting and began heating up. Bothyself and my daughter were watching it as it happened.

After that, we were away overnight and only returned last night. Today, I opened the fridge and a pack of cheese slices came flying off a perfectly level shelf and past my head.

There have been other corner of the eye things and random stuff moving (that may or may not be down to the kids, of course). I'm not frightened, it's more of a loaded atmosphere than outright sinister. But blimey, we've only been here 2 full days so far so it's a bit much!!

Anyway, tell me yours so that I can feel a bit better about mine 🙂 We're not headed home til Thursday so have a bit to go yet!

Yeah we do. They’re for sandwiches, croques-monsieur, cheeseburgers… there are always cheese slices in my fridge.

Not to mention raclette!

Delatron · 27/06/2022 11:08

To film/photograph anything the OP would have to set up her phone on filming all day as she has no idea when and where the next incident will ok?

My phone couldn’t film all day.

Very tricky to take a photo of cheese flying out of the fridge out you. You’d have to have your phone in your hand ready to go as you opened the fridge…but you have no idea the cheese is about to fly out.

Maireas · 27/06/2022 11:13

Indeed. Photos will be nigh impossible to take, I fear, unless they are just of cheese.
Am loving the cheese conversations, though!

To those of you talking about orbs. Would you say this is one? I just thought it was pretty and a spooky light/reflective coincidence. Taken in Ireland last summer.

@IvorCutler Looks like lens flare to me which is caused by refraction - I've been studying ALOT of physics recently with my DC for GCSE's 😁

Thrilled to find so many Uncanny fans! OP can you confirm, have you been reading any Stephen King in the run up to your holiday?!

LOL, maybe an old fisherman was spotted outside the cottage on arrival..........

Maireas · 27/06/2022 11:15

@BloodyHellKen you are a good parent 👌

Photos of the offending (and seemingly offensive) cheese slices.

Those slices look quite aggressive, actually. Like they’re spoiling for a fight!

@Maireas Thank you very much. After the weekend I've had with my moody youngest, I needed that😁

My first thought too Grin

StarryGazeyEyes · 27/06/2022 11:26

During the night I heard DD1 footsteps walk from her bed to the travel cot. In the dark could make out she was standing at the cot looking at DD2. I called out to her to come back to bed and leave DD2 alone to sleep. She ignored me. I searched for my phone and turned the touch on ready to get out of bed and go over to her, only to notice DD1 was still in her camp bed fast asleep. I looked over to the cot and the little child had disappeared.

My dm has a similar story to this and she swears it happened. When I was little we lived in an old pub that had been converted into a shared house, so we had just the one room. One night my dm woke up to see me sat in front of the fireplace, playing, wearing the clothes i'd been wearing earlier in the day. She was getting out of bed to get me when she saw me asleep in my cot. She woke my dad up and pointed to the fireplace where I still was, and then the cot where I was asleep. They both freaked out and hid under the covers. When they next looked I was just in my cot as normal. She reckons i've always been a weirdo!

Rosehugger · 27/06/2022 11:31

It's probably hallucination - we were expecting to see someone there so much that the brain projected their image there. But still spooky. And I had to go and have a shower with DH still in bed after reading @ScruptiousBears 'story and half expected to bump into his doppleganger in the ensuite. The cat appearing would have given me a serious shock at that point!

I'm not saying I would have done any different but this really made me laugh!!

Did you rent it through Scarebnb or Spooking.com?

👏👏👏

StarryGazeyEyes · 27/06/2022 11:35

BloodyHellKen I know - I was like thanks for checking I was ok! It was the 70s and substances may have been imbibed knowing them, but it was weird that they both saw the same thing and both swear to it to this day - and they never agree on anything!

Dd and I went to Jerusalem a few years ago.
We had the exact same phones.
In the Garden of Gethsemane we took photos from both phone cameras.
All dd’s photos had rainbows somewhere on each pic. Mine didn’t. There were no rainbows in the sky that day.
No other photos dd took elsewhere had rainbows during the trip.

she obviously had a mark on the lens.

@Floella22 The rainbows on the photos are also cause by refraction and dispersion of visible light.

It's to do with the angle of the light 'meeting' the lens and if this angle causes the visible light to disperse (so you see a rainbow effect). It doesn't matter that you were both using the same phones on the same day at the same time. Unless both camera phones were held at exactly the same angle, in the exact same place at the exact same time the angle as which the light 'meets' the camera will be different so one of you may get rainbows and the other one will not.

ellebelli · 27/06/2022 11:54

We stayed in a cottage in Wales.
Every morning about 4am there was a noise like stratching on the wall..it woke us all up at some point in the hol.
I also hated going to the toilet alone in thr night felt really uneasy.
The fact we had been watching house on haunted Hill for the duration of thr holiday didn't help, nor the big mirror facing the doorway in the hall so you saw yourself in it everything in semi darkness!!!

TwoBlondes · 27/06/2022 11:55

Hmmm......I'm very cynical about woo but I actually live in the area you're staying, and there's one small town that makes me shudder whenever I drive through it!

greenacrylicpaint · 27/06/2022 11:56

any chance of teens/children playing tricks?

Maireas · 27/06/2022 11:57

Some things are easily explained, like the refraction causing the "orb" (thank you, @BloodyHellKen ) or folks in the 70s taking substances. Sometimes, though, people do get convinced of other forces, and events not immediately explicable.
OP doesn't feel this case is sinister, so who knows.
Entertaining, though.
