Bit of woo going on at holiday home

Nc'd for this as it's outing.

We arrived at our holiday home in France late on Thursday night to find that it's a (stunning) very old cottage, I would guess 300-400 years at least.

First thing that happened was that my husband plugged his phone in before going to bed and left it on the bedside table. Woke up the next morning to find the phone still there but the charger unplugged and on the floor in the middle of the bedroom a few feet away. Also, during the night, I could hear kids talking, but when I got up to check they were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking coming from somewhere in the house as I stood there.

Similar thing the next night, I could hear my daughter's distinct voice, except when my husband went to check the kids were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking. The house is very rural and isolated so not from outside, and everything else was switched off.

The morning after this, we were up at 6am to travel somewhere and as I stood in the kitchen brushing my daughter's hair, the electric oven knob turned itself to the autocook setting and began heating up. Bothyself and my daughter were watching it as it happened.

After that, we were away overnight and only returned last night. Today, I opened the fridge and a pack of cheese slices came flying off a perfectly level shelf and past my head.

There have been other corner of the eye things and random stuff moving (that may or may not be down to the kids, of course). I'm not frightened, it's more of a loaded atmosphere than outright sinister. But blimey, we've only been here 2 full days so far so it's a bit much!!

Anyway, tell me yours so that I can feel a bit better about mine 🙂 We're not headed home til Thursday so have a bit to go yet!

I felt someone sitting on my feet, I was in bed, so I plucked up enough courage and got out of bed to switch on the light, the bulb exploded into tiny pieces.

Insanelysilver · 28/06/2022 19:56

If have been throwing our suitcases in the car after the phone charger moved itself lol 😂

To those of you talking about orbs. Would you say this is one? I just thought it was pretty and a spooky light/reflective coincidence. Taken in Ireland last summer.

Not an orb. That happens when the sun sneaks into the lens. You don't necessarily see it when you're actually taking the photo, but it commonly happens to me when I'm using my phone to take pictures (sometimes I do it deliberately for the effect). I use lens hoods with my big camera and never have this problem.

KettrickenSmiled · 28/06/2022 20:04

I don’t know how people expect the OP to film things though.

This PP doesn't expect anything - but remarked about this upthread, because OP said I would love to film but am too busy having a nice holiday, & it struck me as odd to be too busy to brandish a phone for potential snaps/film, but not too busy to write about it.

Not that I mind a bit of creative interpretation on a woo thread - it's nowt but entertainment after all - but as threads on eg AIBU seem to be at least 50% pure invention nowadays, my scepticism runs deep.
Deeper than the cowled hood of a mysteriously ectoplasmic Grey Lady ...

You'd do what???

I'm not sure why some of you think that evidence of the supernatural would 'pay for itself' (I've never heard of anyone making money from footage like that) and I don't know why you're so offended by the fact that I won't give up my holiday to give it to you. If you don't like it then move on instead of posting repetitive skeptical views that add nothing to the thread 🤷

Ooooooooh, Thread Police!

I know it's "your" thread OP - but you know how discussion forums work, yes?

My parents house in France spooked me out no end - and my DH who is the biggest woo sceptic...well, was - he changed his tune when we went to go in to the main bedroom and the bedside table had blocked the door...from the inside

How did you get in?

PuffyMcPuffFace · 28/06/2022 20:16

@Maireas - just pushed it out the way...but it was all the way across the door!!

Theala · 28/06/2022 20:17

I actually genuinely live in a 200+-year-old cottage in a tiny hamlet in rural France. I know for a fact that many people have died in this cottage, often in tragic circumstances. Not one single thing has happened since I lived here that can't be explained by animals (or insects), weird refractory physics, or the vagaries of the human brain attempting to make sense of its surroundings. In fact, the most interesting thing about this all is the way the human brain tries to make sense of its surroundings. Humans are fascinating. Ghosts, not so much. 😃

How heavy was it?
Did it look as if it had been dragged?
That's verrrry wooooo

Brilliant thread. “Je ne regrette rien” looooool

The house I grew up in wasn’t all that old (1930s) but always had an oppressive atmosphere, particularly in the spare room, my then bedroom and the loft hatch.

When I was a toddler I had an imaginary friend called Daisy, nothing unusual. Until the old owners stopped in for a visit on our way past and informed my parents there was a death in the house before they had moved in…that’s right, an old lady called Daisy who died in my bedroom.

I used to see things out of the corner of my eye, hear footsteps at night, pressure on the bed like someone sat down on the end of the bed, all of it. I became quite anxious as a tween/early teen, half hearing, half imagining things.

Then my great aunt came to live with us for her palliative care and she died in the bed set up for her in the living room. She took all the weirdness with her and the house instantly became peaceful.

Well they’re entirely harmless because they don’t exist.

Think with your brain. If an unknown entity was genuinely turning on the cooker and throwing items (leaving a cooker turned on could literally kill the whole family) would you really decline to film it and be the first ever person to provide proof of supernatural activity because you don’t have time and are too busy enjoying your holiday - but not too busy to write the whole story down for people to fawn ‘ooh spooky tell us more rubbish.’

First ever person 😹 you’ve never been on YouTube?

The idea that there would be money in it is quaint.

Kanaloa · 28/06/2022 20:31

Of course I’ve been on YouTube. I’ve never seen verified evidence of supernatural activity though.

Thank you. I’m not woo at all but it was a trippy day. Everything seemed to revolve around rings! These were separate locations. The rock wall was a Bronze Age fort.

You bought cheese slices in France?

😁😁😁

CarburyChocolateRules · 28/06/2022 20:39

Cheese ‘flew out the fridge, past your head’ 😂🙈😂🙈

I stayed in a rented cottage in Wales 6 years ago with dear friend, her DH and her 6mo DS for a long weekend.
The upstairs had two bedrooms and one bathroom. Baby in with them with a baby monitor.
The first two nights I was freaked out sleeping. I kept waking feeling a presence on my right hand side by the mirror and the baby wasn't sleeping well either. The third night I felt nothing and the baby slept well too. The last night her DS was asleep in bed. I needed the toilet upstairs but dear friend said she was going up to use it. Was watching the baby monitor while I waited and I saw an arm pass the monitor as if to pat the baby. Assumed dear friend had finished in the bathroom and was attending to her DS. Went upstairs and she was still in the bathroom! I have no idea what I saw but I slept with the light on that night and could still feel something on my right side. I didn't tell her for months about the what I saw on the monitor!

OhFFS! · 28/06/2022 20:42

@SisterRuth we are going to an old house near Carcassonne next month.......where were you?

PuffyMcPuffFace · 28/06/2022 20:45

@Maireas it was definitely moveable...I wondered (hoped) that as the floorboards are old that that had caused it...ie movement in the room next to it had caused it to shift a bit...but this was right across the back of the door. Pooed my pants!!!

Buythebag · 28/06/2022 20:45

The talking dd could've been her and then they pretended to be asleep when you checked on them 🤷‍♀️ Seems the most likely explanation for that one.

GumtreeGirl · 28/06/2022 20:49

Had something weird last night. Alone in my 1970s house ironing and watching telly. Switched on the side wall lights in the living room. Nothing happened, tried again and they came on. Walked back towards ironing board and they flickered and went out. Tried again, twice, and same thing.
At that point I stopped and said ‘if there’s anyone here, this isn’t yours anymore. Please go to the next place and leave in peace.’
Just basically the first thing that came into my head. The strangest thing was that I felt really strongly that there was someone listening.
Anyway, the lights stayed on, the listener feeling went away and my ironing continued.
Not in the least scary but very odd - never felt this before here!

BeringBlue · 28/06/2022 20:59

@IvorCutler glad I could help, but yes, I see what you mean about your day with the rings!

I love the idea that ghosts just bugger off if asked politely!

That’s rather the point. There’s masses of “supernatural” footage, precisely none of it ‘verified’ By whom - Ghostbusters?
