Bit of woo going on at holiday home

Nc'd for this as it's outing.

We arrived at our holiday home in France late on Thursday night to find that it's a (stunning) very old cottage, I would guess 300-400 years at least.

First thing that happened was that my husband plugged his phone in before going to bed and left it on the bedside table. Woke up the next morning to find the phone still there but the charger unplugged and on the floor in the middle of the bedroom a few feet away. Also, during the night, I could hear kids talking, but when I got up to check they were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking coming from somewhere in the house as I stood there.

Similar thing the next night, I could hear my daughter's distinct voice, except when my husband went to check the kids were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking. The house is very rural and isolated so not from outside, and everything else was switched off.

The morning after this, we were up at 6am to travel somewhere and as I stood in the kitchen brushing my daughter's hair, the electric oven knob turned itself to the autocook setting and began heating up. Bothyself and my daughter were watching it as it happened.

After that, we were away overnight and only returned last night. Today, I opened the fridge and a pack of cheese slices came flying off a perfectly level shelf and past my head.

There have been other corner of the eye things and random stuff moving (that may or may not be down to the kids, of course). I'm not frightened, it's more of a loaded atmosphere than outright sinister. But blimey, we've only been here 2 full days so far so it's a bit much!!

Anyway, tell me yours so that I can feel a bit better about mine 🙂 We're not headed home til Thursday so have a bit to go yet!

It wasn't in the Cotswolds, was it? It sounds so reminiscent of a hotel stay I had (your explanation of the place) and I had the room to myself 😬

An old rectory?

Parentsofaprincess · 28/06/2022 21:08

Loving the stories!

Annierob · 28/06/2022 21:14

Went to Erquy on holiday - four adults my family and my sister’s family) three children aged 3 and under. Had an isolated villa. Kept hearing random
noises as though there were other people about. My youngest was four months old and A couple of times I thought I could hear him crying but he was asleep in his cot. The noise of a crying baby became more frequent but only I could hear it and I got teased about hearing a ghosts.
Then one day at the beach my sister felt poorly and I offered to take her back to the holiday home for a rest.
When we returned, we found the French family who owned the villa in the house - mum, dad, four children including a six week old baby. They had been living in the garage and coming into the house when we went out. Could the same thing be behind your ghostly experiences?

The cheeky F'ers!! What did you do??

Annierob · 28/06/2022 21:29

Well they rushed out of the house and ran into the garage where there was a washing machine running. Felt very surreal.. we did report but no response.
We were leaving the next day so we just went.
Apparently it is quite common for families to rent out houses but still be there.
A couple of rooms in the house were locked and they had been left open and all their belongings were there. All very odd.
I wasn’t too annoyed, just relieved I wasn’t hearing ghostly voices, especially the baby. I knew i could hear a baby.

EmJay19 · 28/06/2022 21:30

😂

Buythebag · 28/06/2022 21:38

Well I suppose at least they had the manners to run away in shame!

OP - have you checked the garage? 😂

beastlyslumber · 28/06/2022 21:45

Scary, OP! Maybe you need to pray to baby Cheesus?

Cliffrichardsbum · 28/06/2022 22:05

All the people with strange goings on in a Somerset holiday cottage, can you say where they were please?

SisterRuth · 28/06/2022 22:29

OhFFS! · 28/06/2022 20:42

@SisterRuth we are going to an old house near Carcassonne next month.......where were you?

I honestly can't remember the name of the tiny village, or I've repressed the memory! I've posted about this before but in short, I saw a little girl who looked like my boyfriend's daughter. We said nothing to her. She then later said "I've seen a girl who looks like me" about 2 feet off the floor.
The atmosphere hit me & the kids as soon as we arrived, I've never been so frightened in my life. When we got home & talked to the English friend who had rented the place to us he said "oh, sorry, nothing's happened for about 10 years but when we were doing it up..." and went on to list a load of impossible noises, things moving, people being touched etc that he had experienced too. I was furious he hadn't warned us.

Sillybeagle · 28/06/2022 22:31

I have no idea about woo or what it actually is/all about. However the bits I have experienced have never fit with the traditional narrative of ‘old spooky house.’ I currently live in a cottage c. 1800 - no woo. I’ve previously lived in an old Victorian school - no woo and a cottage c. 1600s-again no woo.

but nothing will ever beat the house we rented and only managed 8 months in. A very typical early suburban 1970s build house which backed onto a high school. Both myself and my husband still look back and know something was not ‘right’ about it. It started one night when my husband went to bed and for the next hour I heard someone dragging what sounded like a large bag up and down the upstairs landing, I went up to ask DH wtf was he doing but he was sound asleep and had been for some time.

At least 3 times we were woken by a bang so loud that we actually ‘felt’ it and we both did. I swore it was a large 5ft mirror I had which had fallen over-but no there was nothing. Twice more this happened and there was no evidence of anything falling, DH would get his torch and search the entire house.

Then there was the time I came home from work and heard the dragging noises from upstairs so loud that I stood holding my puppy and keys ready to run and my phone dialled to 999-so certain was I that someone must be up there-but no one.

And the time my husband heard a child playing and giggling at 4am.

The house had a curved bay window with heavy red felt curtains. The first evening we moved in I mentioned I found it odd how the curtains didn’t close-there was literally a face width gap which didn’t close. We laughed saying it must have been a nosy neighbour…

one night we were watching tv in that room and I saw a very distinct undeniable movement-someone was tugging the curtain as if to close that gap. I laughed… we had a puppy and I thought he’d got himself tangled in the curtain…. Until I realised my feet were warm cause he was still sound asleep on them where he’d been all night. The movement was so distinct, I watched that curtain bunch up and tug as though someone was grumpily trying to close that gap. Not long after that we left. I have no doubt that had I had my phone filming that (no chance this was pre-smartphone) no one would believe it. They’d say I was full of it and there was clearly someone behind that curtain.. now I know there wasn’t but how the hell do you ever prove that? It will never be possible to prove the supernatural in my opinion.

LikedAlpaca · 28/06/2022 22:58

Blimey, pull the kid's mattresses into your room so that you are all together, reminder to self to avoid old properties in France for a holiday!

BarryStir · 28/06/2022 23:01

There is no cheese, only Zuul.

CherryRipe1 · 28/06/2022 23:06

Wow!! Could be in an electro magnetic field. We had something in our 130 year old house. A laptop left in the middle of the bed flew off & crashed on the floor. A pen placed on a coffee table wobbled and flipped upwards, DP & myself saw this. ExH's plumbing tools flew across the bedroom floor whilst he was running pipework & Mum refused to go in that room as she was almost shoved over. I saw a little girl crying in victorian nightwear in the same room, thought it was DD at first & went to console her & she evaporated. I was half asleep so could have been in a dreamstate. Would hear a child crying when dd not even there & neighbours didn't have children. Going to RTFT now.

Don't think I've shared this one on here before. Stayed with friends at a very old pub in Essex for a nearby wedding. After a fab day/night at the wedding, we all retired, bladdered, to bed. The next morning I asked how everyone had slept. One friend said she hadn't slept a wink after what had happened in the night. She and her partner were in a twin room. She had woken up suddenly at some point and become immediately aware of two things: one, the room was bright enough for her to see her surroundings (they'd fallen asleep with the lights off); two, a very white arm was draped across her chest. The arm was attached to a young woman wearing a long, white nightgown and a frilled nightcap, from beneath which her hair hung in two blonde plaits. Although my friend could see the girl was weeping, no sound was audible. The girl was looking in terror at the bedroom door, which my friend realised was being kicked in from the outside - again, there was no sound. Suddenly the door flew open and as the girl - and my friend - cowered in terror, an enormous man with wild black hair wearing a white shirt and braces, menacingly approached. At this point my friend, who had been desperately trying to grab her boyfriend's arm across the divide between the beds, let out a scream, and the vision disappeared.
Loving all things supernatural, I asked my friend if she'd mentioned it to the landlord/lady to see if they knew anything. She said she didn't want them to think she was a lunatic, but I was welcome to go ahead. Long story short (too late!), they were indeed aware that the pub was haunted. Several things had happened, but the one with the greatest resonance for me was as follows. The landlady had just opened up for the day and was stocking the shelves with her back to the bar. She became aware that someone had taken a seat at the bar, and, glancing over her shoulder at him, she said she'd be just a second. When she turned back, he had vanished. Her description of him? A huge man in a white shirt and braces with wild black hair. I hadn't yet told her about my friend's experience the previous night.

Low strawberry cottage lake Windermere… 19 years ago, pitch black just got into bed and I felt a distinct blow in my ear, a few seconds later a second blow confirmed it, my heart beat like a drum and terrified me and I froze, was under the covers all night eventually fell asleep, I was in a single bed.

Nononoandno · 28/06/2022 23:37

Staithes Whitby went to the loo in the night, happened to look out the window and saw a man smoking outside stood next to a single storey house, didn’t think too much of it until the following morning when I went out for a walk and found there was a sheer 15ft drop where I had seen him stood 🤯

Rosebel · 28/06/2022 23:38

We lived in an old house when DH and I first moved in together. From the first day there was this really odd feeling on the stairs. Made both of us shudder but nothing more. Then we had DD1. When she was about 18 months DH put her to bed and went to shut the door. "don't shut the door Daddy. My friends can't come in if you do." DD1 said she played with a girl at night sometime.
Funnily enough we had DD2 and the feeling on the stairs vanished and DD1 didn't talk about her friends again. My husband reckons there was a ghost but it was driven away after DD2 had colic.
Not as scary as what's happening to you OP but really did freak us out at the time.

Viviennemary · 28/06/2022 23:41

You imagined it.

Nononoandno · 28/06/2022 23:47

for me I don’t need people to believe me, It doesn’t matter if people dismiss my experiences, I know 100% what happened on these two occasions definitely couldn’t be any other rational explanation. I really hope I don’t experience anything again thou. My sister experiences all sorts and it doesn’t bother her at all. Me on the other hand no thanks!

Trifecta · 29/06/2022 02:00

Cool story.

I was thinking there was alot of dairy in that fridge and maybe it was dairy intolerant.

But yes I agree with talking to whatever it is and saying you are happy there and want a nice holiday.

We used to live with a ghost dog. It was a rented house because otherwise we would have asked it to come live with us. It was quite sweet, used to poke our legs when in the kitchen, come and lie on the sofa etc. (WE'd feel the dip). My DH was the most unwoo person ever before that. We never mentioned it to my parents but after a day or two of them coming to stay the first time my father said; 'Um.... this will sound strange.... but is there something in the house?' We said yes, we thought it was a dog.

I used to have a ghost cat. My dad saw it too.

My nans house was haunted. Stuff moving, turning on and off, noises, voices in the night. The dog hated it and would refuse to enter a room where things were happening and would just bark at it from the doorway.

Every now and again she'd lose her temper and shout at whatever it was to pack it the fuck in or she'd go and get the vicar. 😂

Mostly it did pipe down.

This has made me snorf my brew!

Pack it the fuck in or she would get the vicar😂😂😂

Second one was driving out of our village I'm waiting to get on to the main road & a car is opposite doing the same thing
But there's no traffic which is very odd anyway but he sits quite near behind me & I'm thinking he looks very like my hubbie altho when I went to go left as his going right he slows down so I can't see his face tho I was abit freaked out by it
Weirdly my mum had heard on the radio there was this talk show Double gangers
My mum thought it was funny no-one is gonna ring up but there was lots of them people u think u know says I'm not who u think I am & walk away, that has stuck with me for years I wish I'd heard this show myself very interesting
