Bit of woo going on at holiday home

Nc'd for this as it's outing.

We arrived at our holiday home in France late on Thursday night to find that it's a (stunning) very old cottage, I would guess 300-400 years at least.

First thing that happened was that my husband plugged his phone in before going to bed and left it on the bedside table. Woke up the next morning to find the phone still there but the charger unplugged and on the floor in the middle of the bedroom a few feet away. Also, during the night, I could hear kids talking, but when I got up to check they were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking coming from somewhere in the house as I stood there.

Similar thing the next night, I could hear my daughter's distinct voice, except when my husband went to check the kids were all fast asleep, and I could still hear the talking. The house is very rural and isolated so not from outside, and everything else was switched off.

The morning after this, we were up at 6am to travel somewhere and as I stood in the kitchen brushing my daughter's hair, the electric oven knob turned itself to the autocook setting and began heating up. Bothyself and my daughter were watching it as it happened.

After that, we were away overnight and only returned last night. Today, I opened the fridge and a pack of cheese slices came flying off a perfectly level shelf and past my head.

There have been other corner of the eye things and random stuff moving (that may or may not be down to the kids, of course). I'm not frightened, it's more of a loaded atmosphere than outright sinister. But blimey, we've only been here 2 full days so far so it's a bit much!!

Anyway, tell me yours so that I can feel a bit better about mine 🙂 We're not headed home til Thursday so have a bit to go yet!

I grew up in a house built in 1700s and we often had odd things happen. I always used to hear people in the house when no one was home or awake. Apparently when I was a child I used to see a ghost of a woman who came and sat on the end of my bed and talk to me, I didn’t know that I had told my parents this until one night as a teenager I woke up to a woman singing to me on the end of my bed and screamed for my parents thinking someone was in the house and my parents were like “oh her, you always used to she her when you were little”. Voices and seeing people could perhaps be argued to be imagining things but the oddest (and most annoying) thing was when we would walk into the pantry and something would fall on the floor in the middle of the room as if someone had already got it out of the baskets or off of the shelves and was carrying it out of the room and then vanished when we entered the room and the item dropped to the floor. The time it happened with a jar of floor was a huge clean up operation afters.

Ooh this is great! We once stayed in a gite in Normandy, it was very old and quite creepy. So my sister and I were getting my Nephew ready for bed and he said "Mummy, is it ok not to have a head?" My sister and I said nothing , just looked around..... carried on, but we still talk about how creepy it was!

Yorkshireteabags · 28/06/2022 19:11

I moved into a brand new house built on the site of an old hospital and quaker burial ground. TVs, radios, ovens, fans, microwaves would just come on all the time.
Showers would just come on or taps.
Lights on and off.
Groundfloor bedroom was always cold.
Tinned food lined up on worktop.
Items taken out of fridge and placed ontop.
Wine bottles taken off rack and lined up.
Worse was running out to work leaving ironing board up and returning to a knife stabbed into the ironing board. Someone would knock at door and no one would be there when you answered. Purses/make up went missing and found under pillows. Very odd place.

"They both freaked out and hid under the covers." 😂
I'm not saying I would have done any different but this really made me laugh!!

Look at the label on your duvet, just under the tog rating, I'm sure it says it's proof against ghosts, monsters and axe wielding murderers...as long as your feet don't stick out from underneath...🤣🤣

I'm sure it's the kids playing tricks on you!

Oops sorry I see I’m not the first to mention Uncanny.

The scariest experience that I ever had was at a B&B in Norfolk. Really old farmhouse, but we were lodged in the converted barn across the courtyard. We stayed there 3 nights, and each night I was awoken in a state of terror. This first I saw a man climbing in to the second floor window. Night 2 I was convinced there was a man in the room and it was ages before I could sleep again. Night 3 I dreamt there was a hung man swinging from the beam over the bed and the image persisted for some time after I woke up. I was inconsolable. I’m not given to night terrors and had no nightmares or spooky events in any of the other places we stayed on that holiday. Lovely host, but I couldn’t go back.

I’ve had a few experiences over the years but one stands out for me. Moved into a flat - the person who helped me move in did a double take as I walked up the stairs and said he thought someone behind me. Odd atmosphere in flat - as if being watched and one area of bedroom always cold.
Anyway, my then three year old was leaning on the sofa arm talking to me and suddenly said, ‘where’s she gone?’ I asked who and he said the lady. He then proceeded to hunt for her. He gave me a detailed description of her and said she had been standing there watching him. I said, ‘watching you?’ He said, ‘and you!’ Another time he was having a paddy in his room and came running to me and said someone had whispered in his ear, ‘It’s okay.’ Harmless - kind - but presence definitely felt. I asked neighbours if they had experienced anything and yes, they had - one had felt someone sit down on the end of her bed. It was an old Georgian house that had become a hotel and then flats.

We stayed in a beautiful old cottage in the South West of England a few years ago.
The cottage was beautiful but I had a uneasy feeling all the while we were staying there. I can't explain it. Just like we were being watched and I didn't like to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Couple of mornings around 3am, our little dog who is very well behaved and slept in the kitchen. (No dogs allowed in the bedrooms) would bark and growl. We put it down to noise outside but we were in a very quiet location. I went downstairs to see to him as he wouldn't settle and to see if everything was ok. I decided to make myself a drink and as I opened the fridge door and shut it, there was this very tall man in brown trousers and a brown top standing right behind the door. He didn't look frightening but I was frozen to the spot. He then just disappeared. I took my dog upstairs with me and our dog stayed in our room for the rest of our break. The man was not a horrible presence. I can not explain it. I just felt uneasy. We decided to stay and nothing happened again. I always think back to this Holiday and my DH blames it on the Gin.
We looked up the local history and we were staying 5 minute walk to National Trust place which was a old gun making factory. It was a spooky place but at the same time it was beautiful. We walked round it a few times. There was an accident at the factory and a young man died so it could of been him. Just never know

I have loads! I turned microwave on, forgetting it was unplugged after we came back from holiday. It still worked despite being unplugged.

FINALLY the solution to rising utility bills. Ask your supernatural presence whether it does boilers. And kettles. And the telly.

7vio · 28/06/2022 19:33

Omg, I had a similar experience in an old gite in France, situated in a rural location. We were house- and dogsitting for some friends - in return we could stay and use facilities incl swimming pool etc. It could have been a fabulous experience if it was not for the fact that every night I heard some noise in an attic, and also there was this medieval door leading to the attic with a rusty padlock, i was really freaked out 😳The house was full of antic things which added to the atmosphere. I still shudder when I think about it.

We had flown in to Bordeaux and were driving around the south of France and Northern Spain staying in Sawdays b&bs. At the end of our holiday I found a b&b near ish to Bordeaux for our flight home. The b&b was miles from anywhere surrounded by very tall corn and down very narrow country roads. When we arrived at the b&b it was a very pretty house from the outside but inside was full of big dark furniture and suits of armour everywhere. I told my husband I found it spooky. We were the only people staying. We went out for an evening meal, about 10 miles to get to the restaurant. When we got back there was another car in the car park. Thank goodness someone else is staying here we said and went to bed happily. In the night there was a baby crying/screaming, we didn't mind as someone else was staying in the house!
In the morning when we came down for breakfast the was another person in the kitchen having breakfast then she left. When we came to pay we said to the owner that the other person must have been up all night with the baby. He told us she didn't have a baby and a baby hadn't stayed there that night 😳.
I've just looked in Sawdays so I could tell you which b&b it was, but I can't find it, it's the same Sawdays I used on holiday!!

Odd? That sounds terrifying! Especially the knife in the ironing board.
I thought Quakers were pacifists? You'd think it would be a lovely peaceful place to live.

Those quakers! They are buggers for watching telly. And stabbing. And drinking wine. And wearing make-up. Especially after they are dead.

My sister used to listen to her two/three year old son chatter and giggle when he went to bed. This went on for a while and one night she asked him who he was talking to and he he named him and said “he’s an old man like grandad and he stays til i go to sleep”. In months that followed he told her the car the “old man” used to drive, information he couldn’t have made up and lots of other little things that were factually correct for a bygone era.
