Can anyone give advice or recommendations on my shortlist?

Phantom of the Opera - classic, never seen, always wanted to

&Juliet - seems like really good fun

Mad House - new play, great actors, good early reviews

Woman in Black - wildcard, I usually stick to musicals, and don't do scary films, but have heard a lot of good stuff

the Woman in Black is really very creepy! It’s a great night out.

I can’t stand the music from Phantom so I’d say avoid that but that’s my personal taste

I don’t think it’s possible to have a bad night out at any of them to be honest.

Whitney168 · 26/06/2022 20:06

Not seen any of the others (also never got round to Phantom), but I thoroughly recommend The Woman In Black - great show.

motogirl · 26/06/2022 20:13

Any and all. I love live theatre

Seen all but Mad House

Woman in Black - scarier than the film - very well done on stage but creepy and unsettling

& Juliet - full of 90s and early 2000 music uplifting enjoyable night out. Far more frothy

Phantom - is a classic but I think if I wanted a musical I would more go for &Juliet because Woman in Black is creepy if you want a scare

bruffin · 26/06/2022 20:20

&Juliet is joyous and so much fun.
Come From Away is also excellent
Dear Evan Hansen has some great songs (same song writers as The Greatest Showman)
Ive seen all those twice and would see again

Have a iook at the performance from West End live yesterday that are on youtube might give you some ideas

I think Phantom is finishing in October, so might be worth seeing now if you want to.

I've seen bits of &Juliet on things like BGT and I like the concept, but haven't been too keen on the performance.

I don't know the other two, so can't comment on those

TrainBrainCrain · 26/06/2022 20:21

I LOVED &Juliet, really fun.

phantom I enjoyed but did find myself getting really bored towards the end

Woman in black I enjoyed but the other 4 people I went with HATED it and wanted to leave half way through!

Not seen mad house

123ZYX · 26/06/2022 20:22

Having said that, &Juliet might be one of those things that only really works live

bruffin · 26/06/2022 20:25

another must see is Six , havnt seen yet but everyone i know who has loves it.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/06/2022 20:27

Yes Six is great fun!

BusySittingDown · 26/06/2022 20:31

Oh I'm no help. & Juliet sounds fun because I used to love Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears back in the day but Phantom looks amazing (I haven't seen it either).

I haven't heard of the 3rd one. I think I'd write Woman In Black off just because I'd personally prefer to see a musical but it does sound good.

JanisMoplin · 26/06/2022 20:32

Also recommend Six
Tina ( if you are a Tina Turner fan)

Phantom is a bit corny for me.

BusySittingDown · 26/06/2022 20:32

I really want to go and see Heathers, so if I had the choice I'd go and see that.

BusySittingDown · 26/06/2022 20:33

Unfortunately I'm nowhere near London. We've booked to see Six soon but it's the tour. I can't wait!

iklboo · 26/06/2022 20:36

Woman in Black is brilliant - really well staged. We loved it, including DS(16).

Figgygal · 26/06/2022 20:38

Of those & Juliet
Why those particularly?
Id be at Moulin rouge or back to the future like a shot over any of those

JanisMoplin · 26/06/2022 20:41

Do not go to see Pretty Woman. I was roped into that and it was one of the worst evenings of my life.

Straight Line Crazy at the Bridge Theatre was great but I think it has gone?

Thefailinghousewife · 26/06/2022 20:42

Woman in black is most amazing show I’ve ever seen - so cleverly done. I slept with the light on afterward though (and I’ve seen it about 5 times!)

phantom didn’t really do much for me. Enjoyed it but got semi bored towards the end and I don’t listen to the soundtrack any more or even really remember much from it.

Six, like others say, was fab. Proper girl power, feel good stuff. I took my step daughters and they rave about it still.

we have also booked to see Moulin Rouge which is meant to be fab, so may be worth adding to your list.

Have fun, I’m jealous as I wish I was in London still to see the shows!

Startuplife · 26/06/2022 20:47

I absolutely loved &Juliet, it was so uplifting and feel good.

Also another vote for Come From Away, it might be the best theatre show I’ve seen

SummaLuvin · 26/06/2022 20:55

I have already seen Six and adored it, might have booked to see it two more times on tour. I have also seen Come From Away which was incredible in a different way.

In terms of why these shows - I am restricted on days/times I can go, Thursday/Friday matinee only, and these were the ones that took me most out of the options I saw.

How scary would people say Woman in Black is? I can handle Stranger Things, but wouldn't go for something much scarier.

&Juliet made me grin like a Cheshire cat all the way through. It was so fun!

Have you seen Hamilton?

JuneFromBethesda · 26/06/2022 21:01

I didn’t rate &Juliet at all. Loved the original idea - what if Juliet didn’t kill herself? - but the storyline was contrived and the characters were so irritating. The whole show was terribly pleased with itself.

Woman in Black is BRILLIANT. Theatre at its best. A great story adapted so cleverly for the stage. Sparse staging, tiny cast, genuinely scary.

Phantom as you say is a classic, I don’t think you can go wrong with it.

roundtable · 26/06/2022 21:02

I'm another one who absolutely loved &Juliet. So uplifting. Completely unexpected and one of the best things I've seen recently Liv and we've been to the theatre a decent amount of times in the last year.
Phantom of the opera gives me the heebie jeebies so I've never seen it.

Woman in black was good but tense. I spent the whole production gripped onto DH but I spoke easily.

haven't seen Mad House.

What a fabulous dilemma to have op! I hope you enjoy whatever you choose.

roundtable · 26/06/2022 21:04

My phone! Aargh - sorry for all the typos. Hopefully you can work out what I was trying to write!

Thefailinghousewife · 26/06/2022 21:24

id say woman in black is terrifying, but I am a wimp (haven’t watched stranger things for example!) the cast is minimal but it’s SO well done. The audience have screamed every time I’ve seen it. Honestly, it’s a really amazing piece of theatre and it sticks with you. I genuinely recommend seeing it atleast once, there’s nothing else I’ve seen like it.
