On a Thursday night. Layover. Have two boys aged 5 and 8. What can we do? Fly out again at 10pm.

We loved Alcatraz….. did the actual tour but also took a trip out in a Local boat just around the island. Loads leave down from Fisherman’s wharf. We paid about 10/15 dollars each. We loved the tram tour too…. Think it was two hours but we saw everything in one go including going over the GG bridge. Avoid a baseball game…. Sooooo boring! The best thing was the garlic fries! 🤣

Alcatraz then Pier 39 for lunch. Lots of choice.

Cheesecake Factory…..I think I’d just do that….

Omg, OP’s thread is making me want to go to back again and this time I have a daughter of 12 to take with me and summer holidays coming up.

I remember Fisherman’s wharf .

I agree, though not sure about Macy's....... it's just a big department store which the kids probably won't appreciate.

You'll need to eat though. Theres are many seafood restaurants by the piers, or go to House of Nanking for great Chinese food, or North Beach for pizza.

Sorry, I just meant Macy’s for the Cheesecake Factory on the top floor. It’s a great chain restaurant, kids love it, and their terrace up there is lovely on a sunny day.

We did a vintage fire engine trip around San Francisco then across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito, brief stop and then back again. This was twenty years ago and we didn't have children but it was great fun. Dress warmly for this one.

We also enjoyed Alcatraz, hit the jackpot with our tour guide who brought us to some spots not normally allowed to tourists. Whilst I think your children may be a bit young to appreciate it now (in the present moment) I also think it would be something they would remember every time they hear Alcatraz mentioned throughout their lifetime. They'd burn off some energy there, if that's what you need at the time.

We loved the sealions.

Sightseeing bus tour. Can hop on and off to see things along the way.

If they’ve watched the movie Inside Out (maybe one for the plane on the way over) the family in that move to SF and one character shouts “well done San Francisco, you ruined pizza!” when they order a pizza and it turns up with broccoli on it. So I’d order them a broccoli pizza 😂
