Any fellow coeliacs want to wallow in self pity with me about discontinued products

I don't buy a lot of specific gluten free products, mostly as a lot aren't worth the expense. But through trial and error there are a few things I'd get so I'm especially sad that my favourite gluten free pizza that I used to get for the freezer for a quick meal when I'm feeling lazy has been discontinued.

Gone the same way as Genius Pain Au Chocolat, Costa gluten free wraps and countless others

Omg I’m devastated about Amy’s! I loved their burritos.

Natsku · 29/06/2022 23:07

Also, why is wheat in everything even when there’s no need. So annoying!

So annoying when they use wheat flour for coating things, or as a bit of filler in things when its just as easy to use another kind of flour that more people could eat, like potato flour (probably cheaper too)

SlaveToTwoTabbyCats · 29/06/2022 23:25

Not in the U.K., but always have a big list for when I go!

DH brought back Millionaires Shortbread from M&S (Cheltenham) a few weeks ago, after we hadn't seen it for ages. It's not as good as the previous version but still pretty nice. The MS in the finger shape with the hazelnuts was the best, RIP!

Used to be able to get Genius fruit loaf here but not any more - I miss that. I haven't checked Aldi or Lidl but the only GF frozen pizza I can get is Schar with lactose-free cheese - bleurgh! Not too bad with extra proper cheese.

Apart from cakes and biscuits, I miss pitta bread - there is really no equivalent here!

I like the Schar cereal loaf - called Maestro Céréale here. I like that it keeps a few weeks unopened, and it makes nice crisp toast! Genius is nice for a change.

Yes phren! "Also, why is wheat in everything even when there’s no need. So annoying!". M&S are bad for this. Their salads and fancy nut mixes always have a wheat ingredient / dressing in.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 01/07/2022 06:37

It's the use of malt vingear in things that annoys me. Everything else is fine then you see malt vinegar (BARLEY) as ingredient #34 and can't eat a salad. Or using soy sauce which is not gf in a premixed dish when the soy is a minor ingredient.

Natsku · 01/07/2022 08:55

Malt vinegar and soy sauce are deemed ok in my country by the coeliac society, as the process destroys much of the gluten and then its used in such small quantities that it should remain under the 20ppm limit. Though some people react even to that though, of course.

Mariposa80 · 01/07/2022 16:06

@Natsku - you don't happen to know if that's the same in Denmark do you?

Always new ways to get caught out when abroad - Danes use something called cooking cream which has added flour!

Denmark is surprisingly bad for gf. I miss a frangipane cake that m and s used to do,it was delicious. They changed the recipe on their superfood salad and it isn't as nice, but is still gf. And I miss the fruit cake- I thought it was just my branch had stopped stocking it!

mymysweetthing · 01/07/2022 16:29

Sad about Amy's Kitchen! I thought it was just my rural supermarket experiencing supply issues.

Sainsbury's used to stock gluten free Kabuto Noodles, which have gone now. Again, sad! It's bad enough that we can't get a decent bread roll.

Don't know about Denmark, possibly has the same rule, nordics banding together. At least our cooking cream doesn't have flour in though.

Dc1 is a coeliac (and also autistic and says what he thinks).
He tells people that the only time he can get good food and know they won't discontinue something is if it becomes fashionable!
The cost is becoming prohibitive too £2.70 for 4 glutafin thins now in tesco (£2 last week) so even if they don't discontinue products they're becoming so expensive it's unaffordable.

awaynboilyurheid · 01/07/2022 20:40

Really annoys me when they say gf then stick gf oats in there when loads of us react even to gf oats!
I think I remember a gf prawn sandwich in M and S which was delist, but haven’t seen one for years, there’s always egg ones for sale, you would think that would tell them something!
Also fed up with plain mince pies it seems like so many flavours at Christmas yet we get the same boring ones every bloomin year!

AcrossthePond55 · 01/07/2022 20:48

I'm in the US. Whole Foods had a dedicated GF bakery line with everything from bread to desserts. They were wonderful. Their almond scones were to die for. When Amazon bought WF they shut down the GF Bakehouse.

Damn you Bezos.

DinosaursEatMan · 01/07/2022 20:52

That Morrison’s pizza was one of the very few I actually liked! Along with a Sainsbury’s butternut squash one, probably soon to be discontinued. I make my own most of the time but it’s a pita.

Co-op do great triple chocolate cookies.

DinosaursEatMan · 01/07/2022 20:56

Also fed up with vegan gf food! It’s restrictive enough already.

I dream about a career change to start a decent gf food business. It would involve lots of dairy and decent sized portions.

Mariposa80 · 01/07/2022 21:07

We've got a great gluten free cafe/ tea room nearby. Although I'm so useless at making decisions now, after years of being presented with menus with just one or two gf options, I don't know what to do with myself when I can choose anything off the menu.

Apropos other European countries, does anyone know of a supermarket chain that does G/F ( 'sin gluten' ) better than Mercadona ( Spain & Portugal ) ?

As for the incidental use of wheat flour, this issue was known about over 15 years ago. Is it really still going on ? Where ?

Natsku · 02/07/2022 10:08

Something missing here is GF options at fast food places. Most fast food chains in Finland do GF options e.g. at McDonalds you can get almost any burger in a GF bun, Hesburger has a specific GF burger, even most independent kebab shops I've come across will do GF pizza. Was at an amusement park yesterday and there was pretty much nothing I could eat (good thing I always take a packed lunch anyway, to save money, but its nice when you have the option for something hot)

Mariposa80 · 02/07/2022 13:34

In Denmark McDonalds have gluten free options although not well advertised, you have to order at the counter and can't from the order machines.

Eating out elsewhere is more tricky especially for light meals, and forget about trying to grab any sort of snack at Billund airport!

Go into any UK supermarket. Wheatflour is in practically everything.

I'll give the Co-op some dues in respect of their burgers and sausages don't always have it and Bird's Eye waffles are at present, still GF, but everywhere else, it's wheatflour all the way (and about 3 vastly overpriced gluten free products languishing in the back of a freezer if you're lucky and have no tastebuds).

Mariposa80 · 02/07/2022 14:11

I think there has been some improvement, when I was first diagnosed you had to hunt around for gluten free sausages, now most of the supermarkets own branded sausages are gluten free.

But there are still plenty of things that contain wheat when it has no right to be there - onion bhajis, macarons, florentines, chocolate roulade, bearnaise sauce. All these should not contain wheat flour by default yet frequently do.

I take it all back M&S made without new ranges have just hit Ocado.
Spring rolls and the samosas are back and some new items including.
Drumroll...
Iced buns.
Most definitely will be on my next order. I used to really like their iced buns for a treat. Really hope that they taste good.

awaynboilyurheid · 09/07/2022 08:43

Iced buns you say? Runs ….

notapizzaeater · 09/07/2022 12:36

They are lush ! I bought them a few weeks ago when the6 came out and sat in the car outside inhaling them

Natsku · 09/07/2022 12:57

I got cheese and onion rolls from M&S the other day and they were wonderful. I really want to try more of the M&S stuff before I leave the country
