Barbecues in built up areas

I know some people are of the view that people should be able to do what they want in their homes and gardens but…
I live in a terrace house - everyone has very small gardens and very close to each other. It’s a lovely day here but I have had to close all my windows and can’t sit outside as there is so much smoke from my neighbour’s barbecue. I have new windows but I can still smell the smoke. It just feels really unfair.

I live in a terrace as well, we knew how built up it was when we chose the area so I don’t think it’s unfair at all.

Have a bbq too. Did you move there knowing it was terraced?

I hate bbqs and their smoke. People love them though

I love bbqs. I get round the problem of smoke potentially bothering the neighbours by inviting them along.

I love bbqs but have a largish garden so have them 200m from the house/ other houses. (I also like a big stinky garden waste bonfire)

Like most people in the U.K. and in the world I don’t really have a huge amount of choice about where I live!

Join in and have bbq yourself.

I hate them too OP, mainly because since I had covid in 2020 exposure to smoke makes me cough and wheeze for days. We have Mila air filters to help and close all our windows but you do feel a prisoner in your own home. Plus unnecessary air pollution!

Yeah I don't like this either. The sad thing is I have an outdoor oven which I've loved but I hardly ever use it because I'd feel guilty about the smoke.

My next door neighbour has bought himself a petrol driven lawnmower and my god the sound and smell coming off it is unbelievable. You can see all the neighbours slamming their windows shut all around him. The ridiculous thing is his lawn is tiny so he has no need for petrol.

The interesting thing is that I spent many years living in Australia - arguably the kingdom of BBQs - but people there don’t have smoky BBQs - people use gas and there are even communal electric BBQs in picnic areas. So I never encountered this problem outside of the U.K.!
