Has anyone found ANYTHING that will stop insect bites from itching? I'm desperate!

Bloody, fucking, evil, demonic little twatbag mozzies have bitten me all over my stomach Angry

I always react quite badly to bites, and these are no exception. This is not just itching...this is ferocious, un-ignorable itching that has kept me awake for the last two nights. And naturally, as I lack self-control, I have scratched the fuckers to bits and made them even angrier.

Has anyone found anything, at all, that helps ease the itching? I've tried oatmeal baths, calamine, those stupid bloody clicker things, antihistamine cream/tablets, vinegar, toothpaste and baking soda paste - no cigar.

anti bac hand gel with aloe vera in it worked for me when the scottish midges got me

MrsBertBibby · 22/06/2022 19:29

Bee keepers I know swear by alcohol hand gel.

A hot teaspoon rubbed on the bite can provide temporary relief.

Really? That's something I haven't tried! Thank you both - I will try it.

Eurax cream soothed my mozzie bites

CeeceeBloomingdale · 22/06/2022 19:31

Heat a metal spoon in hot water then press it on the bite

Flavabobble · 22/06/2022 19:32

Hot teaspoon - not just temporary relief either. I had a couple of bites last week that were driving me mad with the itching, a hot teaspoon stopped it completely.

Zapperclick works even on horsefly bites for me. I’ve just bought a new one from Amazon.

Greensleeves · 22/06/2022 19:34

I have done the hot spoon thing before and it didn't help, but I'll try it again. God I hate this time of year, grr.

I bought a little gadget from Amazon that heats up and you press it against the bite - brilliant!

WhatNowwwww · 22/06/2022 19:34

Hydrocortisone cream is the only thing I’ve found to help. The box will say twice a day but that’s only an issue with long term use apparently, so I always put it on every couple of hours when they’re stopping me sleep.
I’d also try a different antihistamine as well.

JellyBellyNelly · 22/06/2022 19:34

Another vote for a hot spoon held on the bite. Or failing that - lavender oil rubbed on also helps.

MissMarplesNiece · 22/06/2022 19:34

I have a very bad reaction to insect bites, a couple of times in the past they've got infected because I've scratched at them so much. My GP told me to take antihistamines tablets. I buy the non-drowsy ones & they stop the itching & pain almost straight away.

WakeUpandSmelltheKetchup · 22/06/2022 19:35

Eurax for me too.

You have to make sure the spoon is actually hot. You also have to apply it for a while. We usually heat the spoon on a candle flame.

MuttsNutts · 22/06/2022 19:36

Eurax cream - it’s the only thing that works for me.

Bangkokbaby · 22/06/2022 19:37

Tiger balm works for me. You need to reapply it fairly often though. Think the tingle of the menthol overrides the itchiness!

JuneOsborne · 22/06/2022 19:38

Fexofenadine. 180mg. You can now buy it over the counter, but only at 120. So you may want to try and take one and a quarter.

I also have a tried and tested remedy.

Steep chamomile tea bags and let them cool in the tea, to fridge cold. Use a few. Put the ice cold tea bags in the bite. Relax and let them work. You can douse cotton wool pads, or a flannel in the tea and use that as a cold compress. Honestly, it's the only thing that takes the edge off.

Google Skeeter syndrome. You could be allergic to the mozzies saliva.

this stuff. Ive found it works best on an “open wound” (it says use as soon after the bite as possible) but I tend to really scratch the bite until it’s “open” if that makes sense then put this on. It will sting like fucking hell and you’ll want to punch something for a few seconds but the relief is brilliant.

Mash up a couple of paracetamol with a tiny drop of water to make a paste. Apply that to the bites.
Or tiger balm also works.

Soubriquet · 22/06/2022 19:39

Apparently, clear nail polish over the top helps

White or red tiger balm? I have both, so could try that one immediately! Thanks Grin

Not saying you should do this but I pop mine, I react really badly to them but popping them like a spot brings relief for me. Hurts like hell though!

Habbyhadno · 22/06/2022 19:46

This has never let me down. I always buy loads so I have some in reserve.

Let us know which of these things you tried & it worked, OP.
I shouldn't have googled skeeter syndrome. Made me want to cry just looking at those bites.
