Shorts on a school beach trip? Teacher

Is it appropriate for a teacher to wear denim shorts (next boy shorts if you know them) and a t shirt on a school trip to the beach with older secondary children. Going this week and it's going to be hot and it's that or poplin trousers! Maybe a dash to the shops to get something else but what and where from?

Don't have the best legs, plump and middle aged!

If they go down almost to your knees that’s fine.

MolliciousIntent · 21/06/2022 21:35

As long as they cover most of your thighs it's fine.

Basically, if you were in the classroom, would you wear a skirt the same length? Or would it be too short?

Smarshian · 21/06/2022 21:35

As long as they are knee length ish otherwise some very lightweight trousers/ cropped trousers would be a good alternative

Yes I think it's fine, I remember going to Berlin on a school trip during a heatwave and my teachers just wore normal summer clothes.

DogsAndGin · 21/06/2022 21:37

Yes that’s perfectly fine given the context of the beach on a hot day

SucculentSunshine · 21/06/2022 21:42

Of course! Shorts are fine at the beach. As long as you’re not showing him cheek you’re fine!

QuentininQuarantino · 21/06/2022 21:46

I’m a teacher in Spain, can’t imagine being told not to wear shorts!

Haudyourwheesht · 21/06/2022 21:47

Of course it's fine for the beach. It's not a classroom setting so need to follow a classroom dress code.

Maybe not the cycling shorts and blazer look though.

cherrypiepie · 21/06/2022 21:47

Ha ha no cheek!! They are appropriate middle aged lady shorts from Next.

Not knee length -mid thigh. Most shorts in the shops seems to be be paper bag waist so shorter in the leg.

Would never wear a short skirt to work! Midi or knee with tights only in winter.

Maybe need sensible walking shorts but they look terrible on me.

Thanks everyone!

Our PE teacher regularly wears shorts which are nowhere near her knee, no one bats an eyelid. Can’t see how this is different?

WonderingWanda · 21/06/2022 21:56

I wear mid thigh length shorts on school trips and no one has ever said anything about it to me.

nancy75 · 21/06/2022 22:07

As long as your bum isn’t hanging out then they sound fine!

KupoNutCoffee · 21/06/2022 22:11

This sort of idea? Maybe a bit shorter but longer a hands width in the inside leg?

Would be fine, plus with the benefit of being able to get close to the water edge without wet hems.

Lol at all those saying knee length! Why? They are shorts, not a skirt and it’s a beach in nice weather. So long as not cheek exposing of course it’s fine. Would anyone specify knee length for a male teacher?

RewildingAmbridge · 21/06/2022 22:33

@Benjispruce4 it is at my workplace for men, knee length and tailored

Threetulips · 21/06/2022 22:36

Denim shorts in the heat sound sweaty!

My thoughts exactly.

I’m middle aged and wear shorts just under the bum (no cheeks) but all of my thighs exposed in summer. It doesn’t have to look vulgar.

AppleKatie · 21/06/2022 22:41

Of course this is fine.

TBH I realised I was getting old recently when I started noticing the excessive amount of thigh the PE teachers at my work have on display every day in the summer term.

nobody apart from me appears to bat an eyelid though!

EntertainingandFactual · 21/06/2022 22:41

Next ‘boy shorts’ are a bit short IMO OP.

Knee length shorts yes.
Thigh length ones like those you are suggesting, no.

Phos · 22/06/2022 07:49

I used to work for a company that organised language study trips for schools and have accompanied loads of school trips. What you're suggesting is fine and I've seen loads of teachers wearing that kind of thing.

Sirzy · 22/06/2022 07:52

Sounds fine. Maybe talk to colleagues you are going with and ask them what they are wearing?
