Is there anything else I can do to help ds with hay-fever?

I've never had it but poor ds (10) is really suffering.

Sneezing, blocked nose, sore eyes etc

He's come in today and his eyes are all puffy too

He's been on antihistamines for months but they seem to have no effect whatsoever.

Lots of things. Get him to wash his face & change his clothes once in from school.
Don't dry any of his clothes or bed sheets outside.
Vaseline around the rim of his nostrils
Wear sunglasses
Keep the windows shut

jackstini · 20/06/2022 18:52

Shower as soon as he gets in to remove pollen
Don't line dry his clothes/bedding outside
Eye drops
Sunglasses when out
Vaseline inside the nose

Can you get some local honey too? People say this helps but I've not tried it.
Get him to have a honey & lemon hot drink. He might find it soothing too

Not sure if it's suitable for his age but the only thing to touch the sides of my DSs hayfever is fexofenadine hydrochloride which our GP prescribed when DS was 14/15.
He's doing GCSEs currently and is really suffering this year with awful symptoms. Sore eyes, itchy ears, sore throat, streaming and sneezing, headaches, the lot.

Cheerybigbottom · 20/06/2022 18:54

My son gets snotty so uses a Neil Medd sinus rinse bottle to clear things out

FourTeaFallOut · 20/06/2022 18:55

I've got an air purifier going flat stick in my hayfever bedraggled dc's bedroom.

Sexnotgender · 20/06/2022 18:56

Nasal spray but he needs to take it properly. Aiming it across the nose towards the ear so the spray coats the membrane of the nose and DON’T sniff it in hard.

SeaToSki · 20/06/2022 18:58

I run an air purifier in my ds bedroom and change the filter every 6 weeks. The filter is a special one for allergies

When he is really bad he gets his normal daily antihistamine (claritin) and I top it up with a half dose of benadryl at night, but you will have google the ingredients as we live in the US and have different brand names

FAQs · 20/06/2022 18:59

There was a Doctor a few days talking about it and nasal sprays were recommended.

CherryRipe1 · 20/06/2022 19:01

Good advice given by others OP. All I could add is get DS to try an allergy reliever like this:
lloydspharmacy.com/products/lloydspharmacy-allergy-reliever?istCompanyId=203d462d-a278-42b2-b470-f22765919080&istFeedId=6087f665-3748-4780-a8df-71af7e6bf4df&istItemId=prxrwaltm&istBid=t&gclid=CjwKCAjwtcCVBhA0EiwAT1fY70SrNlal5kaEGD6wIfHVB2C2DuqpB5qSFggCZ_4vMhJS5MG7wcogmRoCjwgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I found it helped me alot. Much hilarity with it though as your nose glows red due to the infra red diodes up the nose!

Workyticket · 20/06/2022 19:02

Thanks so much - lots more we should be doing to help him so I'm a bit gutted we've just relied on antihistamines

Going to ring the doctors tomorrow and ask about fexofenadine hydrochloride. Wondering if they can prescribe over the phone - not been since covid!

The nasal spray sounds good. Will Google those.

He's currently sat playing xbox in his pants after a shower.

That looks amazing - he's small.for his age though so not sure it would 'fit' 🤔

You can get a paediatric dose of fexofenadine - my dd has it prescribed. Eye drops and air purifier and showers all help, but it’s still pretty bad at the moment. I haven’t found a nasal spray that under 12s can take, but those are good, too.

BiscoffSundae · 20/06/2022 19:05

My gp wouldn’t prescribe fexofenadine she said it’s available to buy otc

HereComesYourMam · 20/06/2022 19:07

Someone on another thread the other day mentioned allergy wipes and I'm so grateful! They're brilliant for school - it's really helped my DS having them in his bag as an extra thing just to help during the day (on top of all the usual things).

mathanxiety · 20/06/2022 19:10

I second the advice here, especially the air purifier and keeping windows closed, plus showering when he comes in and not line drying clothes and bedding.

If you have carpets, curtains, and upholstered furniture it would be a good idea to have them all steam cleaned or thoroughly laundered but better still, get rid of them.

Carpet, curtains, and upholstery absorb dust, dander, and pollen. You're better off with wood or tiled floors and wood blinds which can be wiped clean, or curtains that can be washed easily and frequently. If you already have wood floors or tiles, damp mop daily.

Reduce the number of knick knacks you have to cut down on dusty surfaces.

Make sure your hoover has an excellent filter.

Your DS gets all my sympathy. Hay fever is a curse.

Sexnotgender · 20/06/2022 19:10

Yes fexofenadine is available to buy OTC. Called something beginning with A…

Sexnotgender · 20/06/2022 19:11

Allevia.

Simonjt · 20/06/2022 19:18

Alevia, I give it to my seven year old, he has half a tablet a day, although the GP did say the full dose wouldn’t be problematic and thay I could give a full dose when pollen is higher.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 20/06/2022 19:18

All of the above plus I wash DS1s pillow cases every other day. Don't wear shoes upstairs. We are scrupulous about no outside clothes in his bedroom tales them off downstairs and straight in shower. Plus experiment with anti histamines. Loratadine worms much better for my DS than other over the counter ones such as cirtrazine (spelling?)

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 20/06/2022 19:19

Oh and I don't line dry anything for anyone as if everyone else is walking around in pollen coatee clothes it's not helpful! All dried inside.

HumunaHey · 20/06/2022 19:21

Good advice already.

Also get him a gel eye mask and keep in the fridge. They do wonders to soothe my eyeballs when I feel they're on fire. I have the one below so you can still see and do things while using.

For itchy eyes, an ice cold damp flannel is incredibly soothing.

If I remember right there are two dudes, one is 120mg Avas available OTC and the other is 180mg and prescription only. I have to take 2 18g a day and it barely touches the sides

I asked my gp if there was anything stronger if it didn’t work and she said no 🤦🏻
