Is there anything else I can do to help ds with hay-fever?

I've never had it but poor ds (10) is really suffering.

Sneezing, blocked nose, sore eyes etc

He's come in today and his eyes are all puffy too

He's been on antihistamines for months but they seem to have no effect whatsoever.

Ahi didn't meant you can take certrazine and piriton at same time, I meant piriton (not piritoneze)! Is stronger than certrazine and used pasting in bad days is super effective alongside fexofenadine

Tiani4 · 20/06/2022 21:20

Pasting = occasionally

I couldn’t get fexofenadine for an under 12 OTC, so it depends how old he is. You may need a prescription.

I just bought it in Tesco...

We just got a steroid nasal spray on prescription for dS ten. It’s a child dose. ive also started him on 250mg quercetin which is a mast cell stabiliser. He’s much better with these and has stopped waking up in the night full of it.

maresedotes · 20/06/2022 21:25

Nasal spray works for me. I did have to get it from the doctor though.

MsOllie · 20/06/2022 21:28

Obviously take doctors advice but you can usually take more antihistamines than they say on the pack - ASK GP FIRST

I take 4 x Zyrtec and 4 x 180mg fexofenadine although not for hay fever

redbigbananafeet · 20/06/2022 21:30

Kleenex do anti pollen wet whipped for your face. I've been using them at work and keeping windows shut.

Workyticket · 20/06/2022 20:23

I'm making a list!

Can anyone recommend an airpurifier for his room please? And some allergy wipes?

Dh is keen for me to take him to the GP (notice the me bit) but not sure it's gp and day off worthy.

groceries.asda.com/product/pocket-tissues/kleenex-allergy-comfort%E2%84%A2-water-fresh-40-wipes/1000201883645 on offer at £1 in Asda and boots

Spinfit · 20/06/2022 21:41

This is the BNFC (British National Formulary for Children) dose for Fexofenadine. I think OTC is 120 mg so will probably need a GP prescription unless you can find this lower dose in stores.

OP I was desperate for both me and my son - I got us both Hayfever bands on amazon -an acupressure armband. I was very sceptical but it has actually made a noticeable difference to us both. There come in both adult and child sizes.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 20/06/2022 23:08

My DS has been getting some relief from using a face mask - just a normal fabric one that we bought during the covid pandemic. He even wears it in the house, and it helps quite a lot.

Elderflower14 · 20/06/2022 23:17

I got this in Poundland recently... Its very good. Available on Amazon but more expensive!

Place marking.

DS has terrible hay fever and it’s miserable.

air purifier for his room and a fan. Window shut. I dust and hoover in there every day.

beconase nasal spray

fexofenedine on prescription

he is a teen so a bit lazy about showers and clothe changes when he gets in but I will encourage more.

really interested about the immunology therapy and they allergy wipes.

Forpoxsake · 21/06/2022 06:55

This is the first year my DS has suffered.
how do your DCs cope with taking the tablets or do you crush/dissolve them? My DS can’t swallow anything like that but the piriton isn’t really working for him.

Also with the nasal sprays do you spray them so they hit the back of your nose? Ds said it goes to the back of the throat this way and makes him feel like he’s choking

Going to make notes on all your advice so I can ask for the right things for ds.

You need to be consistent with the medication. Eye drops, tablet and nasal spray every day. Shower as soon as you come inside. Vaseline around the nose. I get it horrifically too and if I miss any of the medication it just flares up and is bad again for days.

AnnaMagnani · 21/06/2022 09:40

The nasal spray needs to be used correctly to work - Dr Sophie Farooque has instructions and a helpful pic of her using one on her twitter thread. You need to spray them at the side of the nose and not sniff, basically the opposite of everything I would naturally do if presented with a nasal spray.

hedgehoglurker · 21/06/2022 09:58

I don't think you've said which antihistamines he is currently on - the ones that don't work.

A pharmacy will be able to help your son much sooner than Friday, and should really be the next step rather than a GP if you haven't tried any of the alternative antihistamines/ eye drops/ nasal sprays available.

CherryRipe1 · 21/06/2022 10:36

@Workyticket The diodes in the allergy relievers aren't actually that big or wide. Lots of places sell them, Amazon etc and you get a spare set of diodes. It's just another weapon in the armoury along with medications, Vaseline, showering, laundry etc. Good luck op with controlling the dreaded hayfever!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 24/06/2022 07:05

Try Nuage allergy wipes - Amazon. My son takes these to school.

interested in air purifier recommendations

Workyticket · 24/06/2022 08:30

Just been on the phone to the doctor. He tried to fob me off with otc remedies and insisted that hay fever is just something to ride out.

it's not though is it - it's a fairly debilitating pollen allergy and ds is struggling!

He very reluctantly prescribed fexofenidine (chemist wouldn't sell me it as ds is only 10) only after I rattled off the list of antihistamines we've tried already and my research from here (thanks everyone)

We're now doing:
Allergy wipes
Vaseline
Showing more
No line drying
I have a purifier coming
Beconase nasal spray

Having an air purifier was a game changer for DH plus when in the garden and outside he does sometimes wear a mask. He bought a bike mask the sort that couriers wear in cities on push bikes with a filter. This was years ago, people are used to masks now.

Sexnotgender · 20/06/2022 18:56

Nasal spray but he needs to take it properly. Aiming it across the nose towards the ear so the spray coats the membrane of the nose and DON’T sniff it in hard.

I’m using a nasal spray for the first time ever this year but it’s causing headaches. Thanks to your post I suspect it’s user error - I’ve been snorting it way too hard!

RestingMurderousFace · 24/06/2022 09:19

Yodaisawally · 20/06/2022 21:22

I just bought it in Tesco...

Amazon has it too.
