Would you bother a Doctor?

I have had a sore throat since Friday, steadily getting worse. It is painful to swallow, swollen neck glands and now I have lost my voice. High temp the first day. Taking paracetamol and ibuprofen in turn.
Had to message work sick today. Would a doctor be able to offer anything different to what I'm doing?

I wouldn't see a doctor at this stage, no. You could try chloroseptic throat spray from a pharmacy and see if that helps. Otherwise you may have to ride it out for a few days and see how you feel later in the week.

You might have a throat infection that needs antibiotics

Thehonestybox · 20/06/2022 10:47

Have you done a covid test??

Yes, agree with the PP - go to the pharmacy for things to make you more comfortable, but it’s too soon to see a doctor - the pharmacist will tell you how long to give it before seeing the gp, and anything to look out for in the meantime.

Hope you’re feeling much better in a couple of days.

Can you look in the mirror and see if your tonsils are particularly red/have sores (you'll find photos on line). If they are, then the doctor should be able to help with antibiotics. If not, and it's just a very sore throat, I'd keep up with the painkillers and look at a throat spray as suggested above.

You might have a bacterial infection but unlikely

Nhs website says wait it out a week

Carlichimp · 20/06/2022 10:49

It sounds like a nasty virus, especially since the fever has stopped. I would get advice from the chemist, and a covid test.

You might have a throat infection that needs antibiotics

vast majority of throat infections/tonsillitis are viral.

Yes doctor

Yodaisawally · 20/06/2022 11:43

Can you see any pussy spots on tonsils?

TigerRag · 20/06/2022 11:47

I had similar just before Christmas. Covid test clear. I spoke to my GP and was given a throat spray. It was because my throat was sore, rather than needing antibiotics.

Oh my, I hope not😁

SpiderinaWingMirror · 20/06/2022 11:56

I've sent dh off to get a lateral flow to see if it's covid.i went to the 02 a week ago so probably wise.
Tbh it swollen so much that I can't see tonsils but it doesn't feel like tonsillitis. It feels like I've got a blister or something in my throat.

Update. Its Covid. Weird though cos from what I read, sore throat if it's a symptom is supposed to clear up quickly, not get worse.

Yes doctor

What for?

no treatment beyond symtomatic required for a viral infection.

what’s the point of seeing a doctor?

The course of every covid infection I’ve heard about ever since the beginning has been different, person to person. Dose up on the usual stuff and rest up.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 20/06/2022 14:32

It's clearly viral so I'll just put up with it and hope it clears quickly

Hope you're feeling better soon, OP.

Shitscared123 · 20/06/2022 15:58

Are you having trouble swallowing? You need to make sure you don’t have a peritonsillar access/quinsy, which can be dangerous if it bursts. I had a phone consultation with my GP who told me to go to A&E straight away. I was totally miffed and moaned at him about being a waste of time. He was right. I had a temp, IV antibiotics, and doc had to pierce the abscess. I am glad I went as I couldn’t eat/drink, was drooling in my sleep and airway was obstructed.

We’ve all had the same symptoms and a fever that went very quickly and two out of four of us tested positive on LFT today. We also all went to the O2 just over a week ago so bit surprising I guess. Hope you feel better soon.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 20/06/2022 16:13

Not surprising! Not bit surprising 🙄
