We’ve been back and forth other this since Christmas but have recently bought DD4 a kindle fire for our upcoming travels. As yet, she doesn’t know it exists, it is a surprise and we’ve mainly bought it to keep her busy whilst we have our hands full on the plane with her 10mo sister!

I’ve been tinkering around with it this evening, it’s now fully locked up to the hilt, so no accidental downloads or web access etc but I’m looking for some game recommendations please!

Currently we have -
cbeebies app
the gruffalo games
a Lego freebie game (small Spider-Man one)
some educational (alphabet and numbers) type games
some Operation Ouch episodes
a few Disney films

I’d love to find games similar to the ones I played as a kid - mostly Dorling Kindersley types which were educational with a bit of a story. I really enjoyed the history type ones (dinosaur hunter anyone!) I’ve googled and searched but can’t find anything similar…does anyone have any suggestions please? As mentioned DD is 4 but starting school in September, she loves the usual unicorn/Disney stuff but also likes non fiction and more factual topics.

thank you!

Do you have Amazon kids? It really is worth the money! Our DS4 can download only age appropriate apps and games. He usually does a mix of iPlayer kids version (watching CBeebies shows), Lego games, Gruffalo games and similar, and lots of car and digger type games.
I don't think many games don't have an educational slant somehow at that age - whether it's problem solving, maths, coordination or just basic skills with a tablet.
I set a timer on it and he can play whatever he wants. He has no access to the web, he wouldn't know what to do though, anyway!

We do but only because it came free for a year when we bought it! The stuff I’ve downloaded so far was through unlimited. That’s good to know we have the same kind of stuff! I’ve been a bit of a dinosaur on the tech side of DD so this is all a bit new to me. I think I’d like her to have a game that’s based on geography (Dora looks good for this but I don’t know if it’s slightly too young, trying it nevertheless!)
I’ve restricted access to the web, as you say, she wouldn’t know what to do with it anyway. How do you find your DS manages with it? Do you find he self limits over time? This is a bit of an experiment so far, it will be so much of a novelty that the flight out and airport will hopefully be a breeze with it (planning to show her on the other side of security checks!)

You can set a daily time limit and the age level in the settings. I don't download anything myself, just let him pick what he likes the look of. He's worked out how to close the apps etc, so just let him get on with it! I know there is nothing inappropriate available and no adverts.

Now and again I just clear out some of the apps that haven't been used or are very similar - it's amazing how many design your own car apps there are! Just frees up the memory.
I think he enjoys the independence and not having to rely on someone else to set anything up for him.

Sounds great, I think she’ll be so excited and will download so much to begin with 😂 thank you 😊
