Is it weird that I've never been on an aeroplane?

I'm 35 and I've never been on an aeroplane. I'm probably in the minority on this but I've been wondering lately if it's quite unusual.

There are a few factors for why I haven't been on an aeroplane. My mum has a fear of heights so as a child our holidays were always by car, coach, ferry or train.

Then when I was 18, I developed an anxiety and panic disorder which made me quite poorly. This went into my 20s. As I got better, I developed my career, learnt to drive, bought my first home and caught up on the social life I'd missed out on before.

I then met my now DH and we started trying for a baby pretty quick into the relationship. 4 and a half years on, we now have two children and have moved house so that's kept us busy.

I'm not scared of flying and I hope I will get to experience it in my lifetime, albeit it could be with my children's first experience of flying too. It's just opportunity and timing. The only other countries I've been to are France, Holland and Belgium. So I'm definitely not a 'travelled' person. Equally I'm still very thankful for the lovely holidays I have had and I don't feel like I've massively missed out really. But if I say to anyone that I haven't been in an aeroplane, they're often really surprised.

Anyone else?

I'm 57 and I've never had a passport or flown. I'm not likely too either. I get extremely anxious if I'm away from home for any period of time. I need to know that I can come home if I need to.

@Luredbyapomegranate what in the actual eff are you on about? I'll ask you politely one more time; leave me alone.

State, not ask.

I’ve never been on a plane. I’ve never left the UK either and I’m 42.

Grew up poor so if we ever had a holiday it was a few days caravan holiday in Wales. Then I met DH young and was expecting DS1 before we’d been anywhere other than Scotland.

We didn’t have much money to take the kids on holiday so again cheap caravan or holiday park deals were what we did.

Finally we had more money and planned to go abroad for my 40th but Covid got in the way of that one. We’re waiting til next year now. Hoping to go to Croatia 🤞🏻

My MIL has never flown and she's in her fifties. Dh first flew at age 26.

Highly unusual in my opinion. And weird. More for what not even wanting to indicates to me about a person.

The OP did ask. I’m answering.

themonkeysnuts · 19/06/2022 21:37

indicates what about a person?
insular, uneducated , stupid for not wanting to see other countries

SarahShorty · 19/06/2022 21:49

Why not all three? I'm a software engineer, I fix bugs and do some networking on the side (internet, not social). I'm considered very intelligent. But if I have no interest in travelling abroad or have no friends, I'm considered a person to be wary of 🙄 and no, I don't have a degree, either, so I suppose that makes me common as muck, too.

Chaoslatte · 19/06/2022 22:05

There’s nothing wrong with not having a degree but there is something wrong with having no interest in learning. There’s nothing wrong with not having had the opportunity to travel but there is something wrong with having no interest in broadening one’s horizons. It’s small-minded, parochial.

Moonface123 · 19/06/2022 22:06

It doesn't matter if OP has never been on a plane , or no interest in traveling, each to their own.
l know people who are widely travelled and have become insufferable bores because of it.

Very unusual among my friends/family. I can’t imagine not wanting to see other countries.
