Any fossil experts?

DD took a school trip to Southend and found what I think might be a fossil. I'm having no luck identifying it online. It's smooth all over and not pointed like a tooth (though of course could be broken).

Any ideas?

It's a belemnite - the internal skeleton of a squid-like creature. Probably Jurassic/Cretaceous (200-66 million years ago).

Good fact sheet for your DD here

Belemnite!

Thank you so much! She then accidentally dropped it on the floor (many tears) and broke it into three pieces. Absolutely beside herself.

I tried to see it as a positive that she can now see inside the middle (a darker circle). She was sobbing her heart out.

It didn't help when her older sister pointed out it had survived for millions of years until DD got her hands on it. 😬

Thanks all - especially for the fact sheet!
